WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. Senate Democrats say they likely will have a working filibuster-proof majority on key issues that could give early wins for President-elect Barack Obama.
Although the number of Democrats remains unknown -- two Senate races are undecided -- vote-counters indicate support from Republican moderates will free up bills such as healthcare reform or immigration reform halted by the current Congress by GOP maneuvering, The Washington Post (NYSE:WPO) reported Monday.
Democrats picked up seven Republican seats in last month's election to add to their majority when the next Congress convenes in January. In the current Congress, Democrats rely on two independents to reach a 51-vote majority.
"The truth is ... we will be fine on most major issues. We will almost always have some moderate Republican support," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

80 % of the public is against card check. If Susan Collins et al vote for that, they ought to be ostracized fully by the RNC , Chamber of Commerce, every Rebublican interest group, etc (not that Id be willing to take bets, though)
I disagree, the Republicans have pretty much emasculated themselves.
I think the RINO’s would enjoy at least the next two years as real dims. If they won’t be even a “loyal opposition” at minimum, then they should get the hell out of the party so a real fight, of some kind, can be assembled.
Norm Coleman, while not full-fledged RINO material, is in that rotating group.
My fear is that if he wins re-election, he’ll come out more determined than ever to be “bi-partisan” and to “work across the aisle”.

Here's the problem - If Collins opposes it, she knows the Democrats will run someone against her when she's up for re-election. Doesn't matter how many times she has sided with Democrats, and I'm sure she's going to whine and say "but...but...I was bipartisan and worked with Dems" but the Dems don't care about that crap. Just like they targeted Lincoln Chaffee they're going to target the RINOs. And conservatives won't be around to help them.
Even FDR mocked me-too Republicans who sat there sniveling for Democrat's affection.
Specter was the only Repubican to support the bill last time it was brought up. Voinovich voted against it.
It also remains to be seen whether or not Democrats from anti-union, right-to-work states will vote to support it this time. Before they could vote in favor of it to please the unions, because they knew it would be filibustered/vetoed by Bush. I’m not sure if Mary Landreu, Kay Hagan, Ben Nelson, & Tim Johnson will vote to support card check.
Actually, there are probably a dozen “Republican” senators that will vote Democrat much of the time on roll calls, including people once considerec conservatives, like Voinovich of OH and Grassley of IA.
Haven’t you heard? The CofC went liberal with their “Bill” in 1993 and remains so.
The last Republican to lose a Senate primary was the unusual conservative Bob Smith of NH, who endorsed John F. Kerry in 2004.
Before that it was Jacob K. Javits, wasn’t it, in 1980?
Republican voters are too timid to retire liberals in the primaries.

This MN woman senator must be the least known person in the entire body. At one time HHH and Gene McCarthy were among the best known of all senators. MN voters have been looking for socialist programs for two generations and are still looking ... in vain of course.

80 % of the general public is still 60 % of Maine. Almost nobody who's voted for her will mind if she votes against it. OTOH, she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer..
OTOH again, I doubt Nelson (Dem) of Nebraska will go for this. As for the others, I can't say I know for sure, but small business lobbies will go ballistic if this thing passes.
I want them to go ALL the way.
The sooner they will be "Palinized."
