Politically correct NHS bosses in Birmingham are battling to ban a smoking room for terminally ill patients forcing them to be turfed out into the cold to enjoy their final cigarettes.
The Sheldon Unit, a palliative care home for patients dying from lung cancer and other diseases, in Northfield, is one of only two health centres in the region that has escaped rigid Smoke Free legislation on sympathetic grounds.
But when board members of South Birmingham Primary Care Trust, in charge of the unit, heard of plans to upgrade the smoking room with a new ventilation system, the whole scheme went up in smoke.
Bureaucrat Dr Chris Spencer-Jones, South Birmingham public health director, ranted against the renovation plans, saying he did not care if lifelong smokers were dying, he still didnt want them smoking indoors.

What a moron!
turfed out into the cold to enjoy their final cigarettes!!!!
‘’Turfed out into the cold to enjoy their final cigarettes!!’’ And what comes next? A firing squad? I’m we’re talking soicalized medicine here in the UK.
I'm going out smoking while trying to hold the SWAT team at bay.
“..forcing them to be turfed out into the cold to enjoy their final cigarettes.”
Even the condemmed are allowed a final smoke. Liberals pretend to be compassionate but, in reality, are a heartless bunch.
Sooner or later we need to grease our tracks with these a-holes' guts.
PING to the Nanny State list.........
Something similar happened here when our state when no smoking. The state-run nursing home/home for chronically ill folks had to go no smoking, sending WWII vets outside to have their smokes. Pretty crappy thing to do to those old vets who were, factually speaking, in their own home there.
Alas, there are many here on FR who will agree with this because they just hate smokers.

I’m guessing I’m not the only one who would just like punch callous jerks like this right in the face. Same for the idiots who have forced nursing home residents to quit or go out into the cold to smoke, not even allowing them a proper shelter (and this in Ontario, Canada, where it gets seriously unpleasant sometimes in the winter - or summer for that matter, when it’s unbearably hot).
Punch them? Noooooo.....
It was actually even worse than what you describe. The home in Smyrna had an outdoor pavillion type structure for the smokers. After the smoker ban went into effect that pavillion fell under the non-smoking law because it was enclosed. DHHS refused to grant an “exemption.”
Delaware is inhumane in regard the isue. The only saving grace is the fact that the winters aren’t brutal.
I agree, Patton --- drop kick is better.
Of course, that is what I meant. ;)
National Compassion Service, heh?
Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. -CS Lewis
How much obvious does it have to be before people wake up to the fact that the whole smoking abuse of power is not about smoking, nor is it about health, it's about the arrogance of power that is exercised simply because it CAN be exercised.
