Police seek data about abandoned infant girl (newborn left in bag on porch)
The Times Leader (Scranton PA) ^ | 11/23/08 | Jen Marckini

The baby is taken to a hospital after being found in a bag near a Berwick home.

BERWICK (PA) – A newly born baby girl was found abandoned in a plastic shopping bag outside of a Columbia County home on Saturday morning.

The baby – born within hours from the time she was deserted – was taken by ambulance to Berwick Hospital and then flown by Life Flight helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, according to Berwick police Chief Francis H. Brennan.

The condition of the infant was not immediately known as of late Saturday.

The baby wasn’t left in the freezing temperatures for long, according to Brennan. He said an emergency room doctor told him the infant had been outside for “not more than minutes.”

A couple who lives at 117 Garfield Ave. found the baby around 8:30 a.m., Brennan said.

Charles Drasher, 47, said he just got home from orientation for a truck driving job in New Jersey when he went to his garage to get his laundry and heard a weak cry. Drasher said the cry sounded similar to possums he had underneath his porch last year.

Not sure what he was hearing, Drasher called for his wife, Trudy, 49, for a second opinion.

“I told my wife, ‘Come out here and listen,’” Drasher said. “She thought it sounded like a human.”

Drasher said he handed his laundry to his wife, walked around the side of his home and noticed a blue Wal-Mart bag on the ground.

“I thought maybe someone dropped off a litter of puppies,” Drasher said.

He thought wrong.

“I walked up to the bag and there wasn’t any noise coming out of it,” Drasher said. “I’m opening up the bag real slow … and I see this head. Her little hand reaches up from the top of the bag and her fingers were really blue.”

The newborn was still covered in blood from childbirth, according to Drasher, and the umbilical cord had been wrapped around the baby’s neck. The mother’s placenta was also inside the bag, along with paper wrappers and trash.

Drasher said he took the baby inside his home and tried to keep her warm. His wife called 911.

Police have not been able to locate the infant’s mother, Brennan said. Police spent most of the afternoon canvassing the neighborhood and going door-to-door looking for answers.

“We certainly hope we can get help from the public,” Brennan said.

Drasher said it is disheartening a mother left her newborn out in the cold to die.

Under Pennsylvania’s safe haven law, parents are encouraged to confidentially give up their unwanted infants, up to 28 days old, to any hospital without fear of arrest or criminal prosecution for child abandonment.

Anyone with information about the abandoned newborn is urged to contact Berwick Police Department at 570-752-3677, or Columbia County Communications Center at 570-784-6300.

Why? The last thing the child needs is to ever be associated with the mother again. And it's not as if there would be prosecution for a poor victim who was punished with a baby just because she made a mistake.

Forget about her, and place the baby with a permanent adoptive family asap.

umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck

Other than to prosecute this woman, why in heaven’s name would you be looking for such a “mother” as this!? Keep her far away from this little baby forever.

Do they have one of those “safe baby” laws that let a mother drop off a baby at a hospital, fire station, etc. with no questions asked in PA?

At least she didn't throw the baby in a dumpster, but she did throw the baby away with the trash.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to multiply.

I live a few blocks from those guys here in berwick. The baby is fine, I found out from a freind at the hospital. The sad thing is Pa has the same no questions asked drop a new born at a hospital and it is a safe haven. I honestly hope that they find the mother and prosecute her for attempted murder and for just being a sicko but we’ll see what happens here. The saddest part is people like my wife and I that want to have a child can’t, and then you have people that do this.

Absolutely. There is no excuse for the mother to have left this baby in a Wal Mart shopping bag outside, when the temperatures were below freezing. Also, there is a hospital right in Berwick; she wouldn't have had to travel far to leave the baby off there.

Good pickup! It WOULD be a bit unusual to be deserted and THEN born!

Thanks for the update. I cannot imagine leaving your child like that. There are ALWAYS other options.

At least THIS baby made it through her birthday...which is more than can be said for these little ones.
WARNING: POSSIBLY DISTURBING IMAGE (FOR PRO-LIFERS).

YOU PRO-ABORTS WILL FIND IT GRATIFYING.

Time to stop sugar-coating this subject. This shot was taken by a pro-life activist behind an abortuary. But those aren’t human babies. The One has told us so.

Thank you for posting the pic of those poor little babies...

Although the pic may seem crude and expoitative to some people, it glaringly illustrates that the content of the womb which is “expelled” is more often a fully form baby, and not just a “mess of cells”

God help us...

Unfortunately, Nana, God may not be inclined to help us any more. This country has sealed her fate with genocide of a whole generation. We Christians must bear part of the blame for not putting a stop to (aborting) the anti-Christian movement at it’s infancy.

The main reason to find the mother is to ascertain that she also is not a child and is safe and in good health following the birth and that the mother is not a victim of a crime herself.

to ascertain that she also is not a child

Good point. and is safe and in good health following the birth

That's her responsibility.

and that the mother is not a victim of a crime herself.

Good point.

That's her responsibility.

Not if she's a child or a crime victim. Or deeply mentally ill. The mother could be an underpass dwelling schizophrenic with psychotic episodes. In which case the baby is lucky the birth mother had a long enough moment of clarity to bag her up and take her as close to another human dwelling as she did. The point is, the authorities don't know and so have a duty to try and find out.
