Policeman slays aggressive dog

A police officer shot and killed a pit bull shortly after the animal killed a cat and another dog in a West Side neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

The incident started about 10:40 a.m. in the 5200 block of Bakersfield Street.

Resident David Avila said he witnessed the white pit bull attack the dog and cat a few houses down from his home.

“We have reported that dog to authorities two or three times over the past month,” he said. “I’m glad the police officer did what he did. What if it wasn’t a cat or dog that pit bull killed? It could have been one of my granddaughters.”

After a neighbor reported the attack to 911, a police officer driving through the neighborhood found the dog a block away on Greyrock Drive.

“The dog was walking toward him, so he didn’t have a choice,” Avila said. “He had to shoot the dog.”

Pit Bulls have, like all terriers, a tendency to agression. Add to that their large size and strong jaw muscles, and you have a potential problem if the dog comes from bad stock or has not been socialized or has been abused.

Having said that, there are very very many people who have these dogs - Pit Bull is not a real breed name - but Staffordshirte Terrier, etc, whi have found them faithful, loyal, protective and reliable companions.

Clearly the officer here acted correctly. HOPEFULLY, the indiviuals who owned this animal will be identified and PUNIHSED severely enough t deter them from having any dog again. They are irresponsible and criminal.
