Obama's children: Off to private school at a cost of $29,000 each
By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist
Barack and Michelle Obama's children will attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., it was confirmed Saturday. It's a private school that charges (gulp) $29,000 a year in tuition.
And that doesn't cover the cost of textbooks or other services from the school. You can see the eye-popping numbers at the school's Web site.
In KC, that's double what the most expensive private schools -- Rockhurst, St. Theresa's, Barstow, Pembroke Day -- charge.

Wow that is quite a bit of money taken from the 400,000 dollars that he will receive being President. It is clear he takes educating his children seriously. I do applaud him for that. As I stated before, that will be the only thing I applaud from the Obama Presidency.
Michell’s mom is moving in...Can someone tell me why Michell won’t be taking care of her own kids? That’s right....Queen’s have servants.
So I guess you are also writing to Dubya and demanding that he kick his mother-in-law out of the White House?! After all, Mrs. Welch has been living with them the entire time Dubya and Laura have been at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Disagree with Obama’s policies and politics all you want, but this type of sniveling has no place in American political discourse. Family should be off limits.
The Obama’s: Just another black family in government housing...........
He should send his girls to the best school he can afford, but he should do so with a sense of guilt that his policies do not give other, far less affluent, families the same choice, and condemns their kids to the wasteland of urban public education.
Thank you for bringing some sanity into the issue.
They should go to DC schools like the disadvantaged black kids doesn’t he think the added security and attention will trickle up and improve the whole publik skrewel system?
The DC public school Amy Carter was sent to became, in effect, a private school by the time they fixed it up to accommodate her. MOST city public school teachers send their own kids to private schools, so they can’t complain much. So long as the unions get what they want out of the Obama Administration, they won’t give a hoot where the Obama girls go to school. And Sidwell is top of the line.
No responsible parents who could afford a private school would send their kids to public schools in DC. Regardless of how we feel about their parents, the children are innocent of politics, at least for now.
In the formal and legal sense, no.
We won’t be paying the bill
who do you think pays the salary of the US prez?
Yep, he is just one of the common folk.
The best thing that o could do for DC itself is clean up the cesspool it has become. It is our national city, and it should be a clean, safe place to live or visit.
He should also see to it that the DC public school system is cleaned up. The public schools in Washington DC should be a shinning example to all public schools in the country.
This should have always been---but others before him did nothing. He has a great opportunity to leave a really good mark on DC.
Since DC has an overwhelmingly black population, it would seem to me that o can do much more for the city than just about anyone else has been able to do.
Just like they did with the Palin family, correct? Screw that.
Why not just homeschool them at the Whitehouse with tutors? It would be cheaper and they would get a better education.
Almost $50,000 to educate 2 children. That’s ridiculous and these people are suckers for paying that kind of money.
That's one way to look at it. The other is that he used his daughter to court the teachers unions.
The DC public schools suck (although some less so than others.) Pretty much anyone who can manage to send their kids elsewhere does so.
Richard Nixon sent his daughter Tricia there.
Sheesh!
