Mayor sorry for kids' 'Assassinate Obama' chant

BOISE, Idaho. - The mayor of an eastern Idaho town where second- and third-grade students chanted "Assassinate Obama" after Barack Obama's Nov. 4 election victory has publicly apologized, saying there's no excuse for such comments.

Rexburg Mayor Shawn Larsen wrote to local newspapers he was saddened by the notoriety his community had received over the incident.

He received e-mails from as far away as Canada. Larsen told The Associated Press, "When people don't stand up and say, 'That's not appropriate, that's wrong, and those are hateful remarks,' it's almost like they are saying that it's an OK thing to do. And it's not."

Here's one of the article that led to this article.

Children’s Chant Against Obama: Never Again (New West 11/18/08 Jerry Brady)

The author of this crud hitpiece was an Obama campaign staffer. But don't let that color your perception of what really happened on the bus.

You’re right. Let’s not play Equivalence. Let’s play to win. We always want to claim the moral high ground but never do anything with it when we get there. It’s like we’re fighting for Hamburger Hill every two years.

For 8 years, I’ve had to listen to Democrats/liberals/progressives/whatever calling for the death and/or imprisonment of the President, VP, SecDef, talk show hosts, and anyone else that dares to not follow their cult of death. I’m sick of it and now its their turn to be demonized for every decision they make.

If a couple third graders want to chant something stupid, tell their parents and then its not anyone’s problem but the kids’. Does anyone think those kids are a credible threat?

As was already pointed out, Rule #1 is never apologize to a liberal. Its a waste of time. These are people that begin every apology with “I’m sorry that anyone was offended when I...”.

That means that they don’t mean anything but that they are sorry that the offended party was offended. They don’t ever regret their actions or words. They don’t care what we think about them because they consider us to be sub-human Sky Fairy Worshippers and such.

When you find yourself in a fair fight, it’s time to reconsider your tactics. We need to stop playing fair, or we’re going to become slaves to a communist regime—and there’s no USA or Reagan to put an end to it this time.

Look, I’m not even discussing the mayor’s apology — I was amazed that people here have the attitude of “Good!” because it was people wanting to kill Obama.

My remarks have nothing to do with the actual story. If it’s not true, then great I’m happy. But I’m a little displeased by the attitude here. Calling for the assassination of your President is not okay.

I’m not calling for an apology by anyone. I was merely commenting on the fact that we have people here who are saying that this is okay.

If it happened, it’s not okay for young children to talk about assassinating the President of the United States.

That said, there’s no reason for a Mayor to apologize.

There are seven grade schools and a couple each high schools and junior high schools. Just one child chanting is one too many -- but the accounts are suggesting that all the children on the bus were chanting. Until it's proved otherwise I don't believe that all the kids on that one bus were chanting. The deliberate distortion is just as insulting to the other children as the chant itself.

Now all the kids in the district will be sent to "re-education" and "sensitivity" training?

I-want-to-make-a-difference MSM employees are skid marks on journalism's clean shorts.

No one is saying that it would be okay for the kids to say this. Some are skeptical of the charge. There were a number of things reportedly said, this was among them.

What the kids said on the bus, if anything improper, was only heard by those on the bus. But thanks to AP and others, their “threat” has been taken nationwide.

Seems that some WANT the threat to be broadcast rather than reprimand the children. Some even WANT to reprimand the childrens’ parents. Even you suggested they must have heard it at home. Did you even read the Obama guy’s article? He took issue with some of the valid criticisms they also reportedly made.

I spoke out against the death threat on the other thread. I also asked where was the Left when rappers and Air America hosts on late night comedians made the same statements to much larger audiences? Well, the Air America audience probably had a lot in common with a short bus.

Let me make it perfectly clear, his death (accidental or by murder) would be a horrible thing for this nation. It would open wounds, lead to finger pointing and crackpot conspiracy theories and permit the eternal dreamers to proclaim martyrdom (Saint Kennedy has been projected to carry all sorts of “positions” on the issues after his day).

I don’t even wish his administration to destroy our economy. I want our nation to prosper under the Obama-Biden administration. I DO oppose Obama-Biden-Pelosi-Reid in their efforts to expand socialism in America, to control American freedoms, to federalize crackpot environmentalist policies, to seize 401k savings...

I wish him his health but I don’t wish him success in his agenda.

I completely agree with you. It’s a little disheartening to see some of the responses, not just on this thread, but on this website, to Hussein.

No, I didn’t vote for him. But I love my country and I love the foundations and principles upon which it rests, including democracy. I will shout loudly any time Hussein does something that I disagree with, but come January 20th, he will be my President.

To hope or chant for his assassination is disgusting. If these were adults, I would say they should all be arrested and thrown in prison for threatening the POTUS.

Kids say and do inappropriate things all the time. Mayors don’t apologize for it, thats silliness.

There has been a nonstop torrent of Bush-hate for the last 8 years, and no one has apologized for it, and no one ever will. What some third grade kids in Idaho said isn’t newsworthy by any stretch of the imagination.

So the kids need a good lecturing, that this isn’t acceptable. It deserves as much seriousness as it would have if they were chanting about Bush a year ago. Which means, I doubt any teachers would have taken it very seriously. They’re kids. You tell them to knock it off or else, and thats the end of it. You don’t call in the national press, and you don’t sent your mayor to crawl on his belly in shame.

Just for a hint how old I am, I can remember some kids saying stupid things when JFK was killed. The other kids shut them up quick, but if they hadn’t the teachers would have.

But I promise you the mayor would not have apologized on behalf of the town. Thats stupid.

Let’s not play Equivalence.

Some people refuse to learn the lessons that have been taught for the last 40 years or so. Play nice and fair, with the Left? That is merely a guarantee of failure.

Suppose you are a high school boy and you get into an argument with another boy. You both agree to meet after school and fight it out with your fists. After school, you show up to the appointed place, and the other kid has a baseball bat. What you are advocating is that we take the moral high ground and go into the fight with our fists because it makes us better people. Guess how that is going to end.

That is a ridiculous analogy and I think you know it. This is an argument of ideas and words, not fisticuffs.

Just because we have losers in leadership that cannot articulate a conservative idea worth a damn (that would be: President Bush, Senator McCain, and all the RINOs in the RNC/GOP) doesn’t mean that we have to cheer death threats to a President-Elect that over 50% of the population voted for.

Start with articulating conservative positions, and then we’ll have a level playing field. We are losing because we are liberalism-lite with Compassionate Conservatism and the Maverick run amok.

You’re absolutely right! Another POO staffer raising the race card. Only the obamaites can raise the race card. They did it throughout the campaign against the hildebeast and against mcpain. No one else dare because then that would be racists. Sheesh!

No, we are losing because the leadership of the Republican Party is liberalism-lite, despite the howling of their base, especially in recent years. So why would the leadership of the party go against their own base? Because the Left owns the media of information exchange in this country - television, newspapers, magazines etc., as well as the propaganda tools of entertainment - TV, movies, music, etc. They own that because they are ruthless in their acquisition of control of these elements, and care absolutely nothing for fair play. Do you think someone like McCain or Bush gets their news from FreeRepublic? Hell no. They get it from the above sources, and they actually believe the BS line that America is turning left, so they go where they think the wind is blowing, not understanding that it is the core base that is against illegal immigration, the bailout, expanded government, etc., rather than just some fringe element.

We need to employ the same ruthlessness as the Left in our protection of this country or we will lose it. We need to cry "free speech" and "dissent is patriotic" and "how dare you question my patriotism" and on and on whenever people even marginally on our side express controversial things. We need to emasculate the Left, so that they become as accepting of vicious, brutal, lying attacks on their character as the Right has become. We need to make the Left look like prison b*tches, the way they have been making us look. I'm convinced that so many young people flock to the Left because that appears to be where the strength is, while the Right looks like a bunch of hand-wringing, simpering, apologizers every time some yahoo on the Left points an accusatory finger. People, especially the dumb young ones, respect and follow strength and despise weakness. That is the brutal reality.

We all need to embrace this brutal nature of the game and work with it, or we will lose. You can take what you see as the high road all you want, but we'll see how noble that was when the communists slam you against the wall and put a bullet in the back of your head. We fight now and use every dirty trick we have to, or we will lose this country, and we will deserve to. No apologies and no prisoners from now on.
