As Republicans sort out the reasons for their defeat, they likely will overlook or dismiss the gorilla in the pulpit.
Three little letters, great big problem: G-O-D.
I'm bathing in holy water as I type.
To be more specific, the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents if reckoning doesn't soon cometh.

Well, this is this the crossroads that the party finds itself at at the moment. We’re either going to go the RINO way or the social conservative way. Essentially, Romney or Palin.
>>>>Parker is ignoring the fact that McCain, who rejected the religious right and would not campaign on its issues, lost an election soundly, while Pres. Bush, who accepted the religious right and did campaign on its issues<<<<<<
John McCain was a terrible GOP candidate who became so on the strength of ticket-splitter Huckster Elmer Gantry, who captured 20 to 30 percent of the primary vote right up to the very end. His dependence on Evangelicals was inarguable and acknowledged by Huckster himself.
GWB campaigned in 2000 as “a uniter not a divider” and in 2004 on the basis of the War On Terrorism.
If he was campaigning “the religious right .... and its issues” it was a rather subtle maneuver.
Parker is just trying to be the columnist equivalent of a shockjock; a GOP Leonard Pitts, if you will. That being said, she can suck my sack
the socons will always forgive the pro-life republican, whether he spends too much or not. This prevents total socialism. The more secular fiscal conservatives stayed home to protest the Bush economy and we have Obama as a result.
if romney won the nomination, we would have Utah, Idaho a few other mountain states and that’s it. And that’s only because he’s a mormon. If he had no religion, he would have lost everything.
>>>>Religionists won Prop. 8 in liberal California. <<<<
An utterly preposterous statement and simply more of the intense and unending solipsism that suffuses the Religionist Party.
66 percent of all Americans reject same sex marriage.
66 percent of Americans are not Evangelical Christians.
Oh, tee-hee, Kathleen, aren't you witty?
Another Vichy Republican writes another post-election piece in a doomed effort to remain relevant.
“Shifting demographics”??? What a moron. CNN exit polls show the same percentage of self identified conservatives turned out to vote in 2008 as 2004. The difference was that the percentage of self-identified Republican voters dropped by 7%. The inescapable conclusion - listening to hacks like Kathleen Parker is resulting in conservatives no longer identifying the Republican party as the party that most represents their values.
I have to say though, some religious voters need to wise up this primary season and support the most well-rounded conservative candidate rather than the most outspoken candidate on social issues. Support for Huckabee caused a very liberal Republican to be nominated and could stick us with a Romney or Guliani in 2012, rather than a Palin or Jindal. Wise up people!
>>>>So, do you think that Arnie dear is a great Republican? Hmmm?<<<<
A pointless question.
Irrelevant.
Why must it be either/or? We have Hunter and Jindal who are Conservatives, period. I do not, personally, like to categorize Conservatives. You either are or you aren’t. The reason we don’t win is precisely because we do not nominate Conservatives.
We do not nominate Conservatives because we do not support or vote for them. No, instead of supporting a Conservative we had much rather play American Idol and rationalize that our favorite candidate is truly a Conservative.
Of course we spend a lot of time condemning the MSM (they deserve it) and the sheeple who voted for Obama because the media said he was the best. The same people who make those condemnations of Democrats were playing the same game during the Primaries. It turns out that the Left is a lot better at that game than we are. Kathleen Parker is one insane (rhymes with witch). I must have missed it when McCain was running on religion or when social conservatives were controlling the party this election.
If social conservatives, or any Conservatives at all were in control we would not have had John McCain. The best thing that could happen in the 2012 primary is for Romney and Huckabee to stay out of it.
I’ve been reading your posts and I don’t get your point. What’s your point?
Were you thinking clearly when you read his post? Because that’s clearly not what it said.
She’s not a RINO. She’s a liberal.
GOP lost due to economic issues. GOP is one of the strongest proponents of limited government oversight of private industry. One of the private industries (Wall Street investment bankers) took advantage of the loopholes in SEC laws and created a matrix of leveraged funds buying everything and insuring everything with leveraged money. The system blew up crippling the US economy. Subprime mortgages exposed the crack in the house of cards created by Wall Street by the excessive and reckless usage of leveraging. McCain tied and in some polls lead after he chose Palin, but lost the lead and never recovered once the large banks started to fail. Economy and not national security became the closing issue on the minds of many independent voters and blue collar Dems, and BO got their votes. Today the average American maxed out on their credit cards, maxed out on their equity loans and have very little in savings. They are in no mood to spend and consume, thus no tax cut or government bailout is going to jump start the economy. Wait till the retail numbers after Xmas. Many retailers are at the margin and a sizeable number of large retailers may declare Chapter 11, and more retail employees will join the unemployed bank and financial employees on the street. Vacant stores in malls will impact commercial real estate/commercial real estate mortgages. So will the credit card companies as unemployed consumers default on paying. In other words 2008 is a Recession and 2009 will become a Depression. My advice to freepers is to ignore politics because the GOP nor the Dems can help us, and go into surival mode. Organize your family and street to survive the deflation and hyperinflation that will follow. Crime and homeless squaters will threaten the quality of life on main street. KP will soon learn that religious values (backed up by a firearm) will be the only thing left that will keep US society civil.

We had a bad field. The only real conservative was fred and he didn’t show any heart. Also, huck was the only one who wanted to abolish the income tax. That was another major factor for his popularity.
DU talking point.
