Reporter wasn't White House dog's 1st bite victim

BOSTON – Turns out that when it comes to biting White House visitors, President Bush's dog Barney is a repeat offender.

Boston Celtics public relations director Heather Walker said Friday that Barney bit her wrist and drew blood as she tried to pat the Scottish terrier in September after a White House ceremony honoring the team's 17th NBA championship.

"It was very strange. I didn't expect him to bite me," Walker told The Associated Press.

Adding to that: Presidential pardon for Barney POST HASTE! And sadly, I’m not even entirely joking.

Doing their job probably didn’t include petting the dog.

He was leashed.

Rule #1 with strange dogs - don't try to pet them wthout first getting the owner's permission.

Doubt the reporter asked since it wasn't mentioned.

Any dog will nip if hands are waved in front of it too fast or is accidentally trodden on.

From what I see Barney nipped the reporter he did not bite or even snap at him there is a great deal of difference.

There are many photos of Barney with strangers petting him and interacting with him see the Barney cams on the White House website if he was dog that was subject to snapping or biting.

Absolutely think of the Barney cams this dog is fine with strangers who treat him with respect and acknowledge he is a dog not a cuddly toy even though he is small.

We now have a cat.

I've seen more than one cat do the same thing Barney did.

I have a Yorkie. He only bites a person who he thinks is a threat. But, if he doesn’t like the look or the smell of a person, man, he doesn’t warn, he just goes right to it, and bites that person right away! He figures, he is small, and his best shot is to take out the threat quickly! And he is so fast! He wouldn’t do well at the White House!

Asking the owner AND the dog for permission.

My neighbor has a chihuahua about the size of some of the dust bunnies under my bed. I'd just as soon put my hand in the garbage disposal than pet him without his o.k. And he knows me, lol.

You probably should have spent more time supervising the way your children interacted with the dogs, and taught your children how to interpret doggy body language, so they would know when to back off, and leave the poor dog alone!

In the first instance you are correct, in the second instance the problem was food (popcorn-my son had it and the dog wanted it). We didn't handle that issue appropriately either. As I said, I confess to being dog ignorant and I won't inflict myself on another poor puppy.

My point was that it's the owners responsibility to control the dog within it's environment. Whether it is children, or various members of the press and public that the dog is being exposed to, the owner must assume that not all people approaching will be dog savvy people and act accordingly.

I have four kids, and each of them bit people too!

I decided to keep them, and train them not to do it. I think time has proven that I made the right choice.

I disagree he has interacted fine with strangers over 8 years including the Christmas Barney cams and he did not bite the reporter just a little nip that needed a band-aid and probably in reality did not even need that.

I've seen more than one cat do the same thing Barney did.

I've seen one do worse! However, the difference is that the cat doesn't intimidate me and I don't walk around trying to be nice to it and allowing it to sit in my chair while I sit on the floor because it growled and scared me.

It was a ridiculous situation and the moment I felt that I had to obey the dog or get bitten, the dog should have been gone. It was a dangerous situation because the dog was clearly in charge.
