Federal officials have launched a preliminary inquiry into whether recent acts of vandalism against Mormon temples and meeting houses are hate crimes, a department spokesman said Friday.
"We are looking into whether these acts are intimidating people into going into houses of worship," said Juan Becerra, of the Salt Lake City FBI. "The right to worship is a basic civil right."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints actively supported the passage of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California.
Since the Nov. 4 election, seven houses of worship in Utah have been vandalized, according to Becerra.
Thursday, envelopes filled with an unidentified white powdery substance were delivered to two Mormon temples, one in the Los Angeles area and one in Salt Lake City.

This would be a hate crime, if not terrorism
Good.
Well, it’s about time.
hang in there,Mormons....you did the right thing....
It should take about two seconds to determine it to be a “hate crime”.
I hate the hate crime legislation, but since it’s here and it’s being used, why not this?
1}Someday, some Gays will want multiple Legal partners.
2}In the Civil War Era, and the following decades “Big Government” use its Military against the Mormons. State and Local Governments harassed Mormons, and encouraged driving them OUT.
3} Mormons are the most caring & helpful “door knockers” in any neighborhood. They will step in and Help. {They've helped Me clean my gutters, AFTER I told them that I'm happy with my faith}.{Acorn types think they are entitled to ignore Parking Laws}.
While vandalism and envelopes of white powder cause some concern, I doubt it would intimidate people from attending church. I will attend but maybe with a can of Mace in my purse. As for self-defense, we Mormons can probably handle just about anything that comes. We will just “Bible-bash” any intruders. With our additional scriptures, hymnal, and lesson manuals, our scripture cases probably weigh close on five pounds and practically everyone over age twelve carries one. ;o)
All of this Mormon attacking is having the (unintended) effect of creating sympathy in me for the Mormons.
I never hated them or anything, but at this point I have some gratitude towards them for their moral stand and for the fact that they are undergoing this persecution.
I wonder when the gays are going to start marching around in front of the mosques and the inner city black churches?
There are three chances of this happening.....FAT, SLIM and NONE.
BTTT
I’m not LDS, but when I’ve had people ask, I take it as a compliment.
