An architect of the original bailout bill said today Democrats lack the votes to pass bill giving auto companies a piece of the $700 billion bailout pie next week.
Sen. Chris Dodd to ABC News: "I want to help them if we can, but I'm not going to give anyone a blank check, so we're going to try and do something if we can next week. I don't think the votes are there. Candidly, I don't think we have the votes to get that done. With no big change between now and next Wednesday, I'm skeptical."
Even after January, Democrats will have to gain some Republican support in the Senate to pass a new rescue package for the auto makers.
And that is looking less likely. Another Republican aide said every time Congress passes a rescue package for a new industry, others will line up.

Bump
Lessee... 57 Dems plus Snowe, Collins and Specter.
Looks like a supermajority to me.

Dodd: "Barney, tell the automakers if they double the kickbacks, payoffs, and bring on the whores
for our Congressional Brothels, then money from our helpless constituents will be on the way.
"
He’s saying he cannot get all of the democrats to vote for it.
Yeah well, good luck with that. And oh, it is AOF.
I'm moving to the southwest, and will be doing as little for everyone as humanly possible, unless I know they are conservatives. The left can wreck the country without us. But lift a finger for them? Not a chance. After they come crawling on their knees begging for forgivenness of their injustice to Bush, maybe. Which I put a few years after Iran hits us hard or hell freezes, whichever comes first.
I’m planning to set up a carpentry/joinery shop and build really, really bad chairs that fall apart as soon as someone sits in them. Maybe I can get a bailout courtesy of the American taxpayers. It’s worth a try... especially with the Democrats gaining seats and the White House, both.
How’s Dodd doing on his mortgage payments (read bribe)?
don’t forget to unionize your shop and pay the help $70\hr.
He’s talking about next week, not next session.
What about the 14 senators from the 7 new states—anybody heard from them yet?
So, Dodd goes all out to save Wall Street, AIG, and the Banks, but not the automakers? Say what you will, the automakers actually make something of value while the fiancial services industry (which Dodd has oversight of) has been an unmitigated disaster.
Lots of FReepers luv to criticize the Big Three Auto makers. But if GM, Ford, & Chrysler did their jobs as poorly as Wall Street & the banks, wed all be driving the equivalent of Pintos that cost $50K, get 10 MPG, leak oil, have a service life of 24K miles, and regularly explode without warning, killing the occupants.
What is Barney doing in this pic?
I have seen it several times here, and can’t figure out what kind of move is suggested by his posture, unless it is some bizarre kind of “boy love” to the microphone.
And, why do the dems find it so amusing?
“...but if I can get someone ELSE to give ‘em a blank check, we-hell, let's DO it!”
“From the sounds of it, which I don’t believe, GM doesn’t have past next week.”
Was always fascinated by stories of people who became rich by buying Penn Central RR stock shares at 10 cents a share during the Great Depression...May be sorely tempted to buy at that price—if a bailout is in the works and if GM files a Chapter 11 to unload it’s debts.....For $100 plus broker fees you could get 1,000 shares...well, what the heck, i’ll take GM and Boardwalk for a buck fifty...
Yeah, right. We heard the exact same exclamation from the same folks when the monster bank bailout was being kicked around. But notice it still passed.
