We were experiencing a database issue today that effectively froze the site content. It has been defrosted.
We've experienced numerous technical issues this past month. In an effort to handle increasing traffic, we've made upgrades to our internal structure that have rendered the site far more brittle than it ever was, coupled with general growing pains, coincidental hardware failures and a little foul play (at least one nasty denial of service attack) has seen the site down far too many hours this month. It's been frustrating for everybody involved and I apologize.
No reason to apologize John you are doing great.
If we need another Freepathon lets do it for the hardware needed.

Thank you! We appreciate all your hard work to keep this site up and running!
No apology needed, but the explanation is helpful.
I’m not sure how you got it fixed, but Thank You!!!
Thanks for the update Mr. Robinson.(can I call you Jim?)
This site is a beacon of light in a new political world of darkness. Keep up the great work!
Long live FR!!!
Thank you for telling us what’s been going on, John. This is the greatest conservative web site in the world, and it’s well worth the occasional system problems. The DOS attack concerns me most—I’m sure such attacks will increase as Obama consolidates his power and begins his effort to suppress conservative speech. I believe I speak for many FReepers when I say we’ll do whatever you need to make the site stronger and more resistant to attacks. God bless you for your work in this noble cause.
Keep on fighting the good fight and don’t let those Chicago Thugs try to shut this down.
No apology needed—techo-crap happens.
1) Why should their be a DOS problem? Freerepublic is hosted by a company, NTT America, that offers “DDos Countermeasures”.
2) Separating your databases, static files, and membership database among a few servers with quad core Xenons with 16MB RAM and RAID hard drives, and having your DNS hosted separately should alleviate trouble here.
Lately, I am getting alot of ‘Bad Request’ errors when viewing the site.
Oh, forgot to say. I love FR!
Thanks for the update.
I would imagine that brittle means a bit fragile and not running at peak performance.
BBrittle? What does that mean? Have you considered getting someone to take a look at what youre doing? This site lost a lot in performance when the tabs and feeds were added. It used to be a lot better, imo.
I trust John to bring it up to speed and even with the new additions you mentioned it will be faster and more efficient than ever in the near future.
LOL, everyone at FR is watching what he is doing...
And John knows what he is doing.
No apologies necessary. Such is life and life is not fair.
You and Jim do fabulous work and put forth tremendous effort on our behalf and we appreciate it beyond words.
As a web developer myself I know what you are going through. You’re doing great ... thanks!!
Would this help?
I don’t know if it’d help FR but my husband seems to think it works for everything. :)
It’s Bush’s Fault.
Just add a little WD-40 and we can conquer the world :-)
NO apologies John!! HEAR??!!!!
If it wasn’t for Free Republic, there would have been a lOT of very depressed souls this month. It has kept me going. When it wasn’t available, I mostly prayed and sipped coffee!! lol
Polly
John, thanks for all you have done, I know it’s been a pain in the ass, but you’ve done great.
Agreed!
