CA: State high court throwing out Prop. 8 sure to lead to recall effort
San Diego Tribune ^ | 11/11/2208 | Chris Reed

Posted on 11/11/2008 6:22:29 PM PST by Ol' Sparky

The California Supreme Court's surprising announcement that it will quickly review the legality of Proposition 8, banning gay marriage, has prompted growing speculation that the four judges who found a right to gay marriage in the state Constitution in a May ruling will quickly throw Prop. 8 out. If that happens, watch out for a "barn-burner of an election -- the biggest thing this state has ever seen," says recall election guru Ted Costa.

Costa says he's already been contacted by some of the folks who would seek to recall Ronald George, Joyce Kennard, Kathryn Werdegar and Carlos Moreno if Prop. 8 is scrapped. He thinks it's premature and risky because talk of a recall "would just (bleep) off the judges."

Costa also doesn't sound like he's too thrilled about such a recall, saying it wouldn't be "healthy." Citing all the financial turmoil in California, he said, "If someone's going to do some recalling, that should be the focus."

But Costa sounds certain such a recall would happen and agreed that it would be no problem at all for gay marriage opponents to quickly gather the signatures of 12 percent of the electorate to force a recall election targeting George, Kennard, Werdegar and Moreno. He said supporters of Prop. 8 such as the Knights of Columbus, the Mormon Church and other traditional religious groups all had "massive" resources to bring to bear.

He doesn't think the state Supreme Court will overturn Prop. 8. "I gotta believe they'll uphold the initiative process." But if the four justices do, Costa says expect an amazing spectacle.

I agree. I think literally hundreds of millions of dollars would be spent on the recall. Gay marriage opponents see Prop. 8 as akin to a last stand preventing a global movement toward acceptance of gay marriage and will go all out. Gay marriage supporters, for their part, will no longer accept incremental progress or "civil unions."

At least it would be good for the California economy.

You are correct. I have known many Mormons. they are the kindest people you will ever meet. And good people. I don't believe as they do, but no one can say they don't live wholesome lifestyles with family at the center.

I don't know why Romney was so gay friendly, but whatever the reason, I am sure it had nothing to do with his beliefs.

I have to state a few exceptions, like Harry Reid! But again, I don’t think his actions are attributed to his being a Mormon. He would be an idiot no matter what faith he was. Every group has a few.

Well, this will certainly spark a revolt. The will of the people overturned by a couple of guys in black dresses. I think it’s time to remove these people by force

You realize of course that this would be the SECOND time that happens. They already threw out Prop 22 which was passed by 61% of Californians in 2000.

Well, the fact that Romney campaigned on a abortion rights, gay rights, illegal alien rights, universal health care, gun grabbing platform must’ve fooled the MA voters. He’s a liberal like Arnie. And Arnie didn’t work out well for California either. Never again! If Romney tries to run for president again, I swear I’m going to glue his pro-abortion, pro-liberal agenda videos and speeches to the top of every Free Republic page and thread. Especially the one where Romney (with a slick/smug/evil smile on his face) is pushing for abortion “rights” for under age girls even without parental notification as long as a judge approves it. He’s one sick puppy.

We should just go for a clean slate. Recall all state officers and legislators. After all, Tom McClintock is gone, not much point in keeping the rest of them...heheh.

I know this Prop 8 legal stuff makes no sense, but they have their legal argument ready, that Prop. 8 would be an illegal constitutional amendment.

Liberal judges may agree, we’ll see.

I don’t hate Mitt. He was a big lib however.
As for the LDS, some of the nicest people on FR are LDS!

No, that’s not what I meant. By definition, an amendment is a ‘revision’. You need to explain your initial comment further.

You forget, my friend. Prop 187 was not overturned by the CA Supreme Court.

It was initially the federal conspirators working in concert with their state co-conspirators that overturned prop 187. The feds kicked it off, basically delaying and derailing it.

The fix was in.

This could become a trend (I hope so).

How soon would we start the impeachment of SCOTUS?

The LDS community volunteered lots of hours for Prop 8 signs. Many stood on street corners at rush hour to make sure the signs were observed. The anti-prop 8 crowd routinely removed pro-8 signs and dumped them in canyons...major league litter bugs. Some of the anti-prop 8 people showed up on the sidewalks next to those carrying pro-prop 8 signs. It was a campaign you couldn't buy...pro-8 people dressed in their Sunday best next to anti-8 protesters dressed for a gay pride parade. The contrast was obvious.
