Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has decided to run for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee and is in talks with Newt Gingrich to win the former House speaker's endorsement, FOX News learned Tuesday.
Steele declined to comment, but a source close to the situation said Steele would announce his candidacy as early as Thursday.
The source also contradicted a report in Tuesday's Washington Times that Steele and Gingrich were competing for the RNC post.
"There is no fight," the source said. "This tension between Michael Steele and Newt Gingrich is totally fabricated and, in fact, Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP."

That’s wrong. You don’t know me, nor how I form my opinions.
Well, then that’s good enough for me.
I have heard Steele on FOX News and he is very well-spoen, intelligent and should make a great RNC chairman.
That Idiot Duncan belongs in the same trash heap with Martinez.
I have the same feeling, but i don’t know why.
Steele would be great...we need to move him forward. He is NOT a Colin Powell.
Was she that total doofus that was on the sun morning shows and couldn’t hold her own with Debbie Wasser-whats-her name??
I listened to him on Hannity today. All Newt is interested in is Newt - as his adultery amply demonstrates. Said he is going to consider running for President. What a hoot!
Don't put it past the unnamed, faceless grey eminences to try to slide a RINO into the chair.....and then we wonder what hit us.
What a pity we don't trust our Party anymore. We trust the principles, but not the operatives pulling the switches behind the curtain.
The RNC needs a complete housecleaning.

GUESS YOU ALL HAVEN’T LEARNED ANYTHING!
Steele is a good choice but here I am reading post after post...where is Sarah????
61% women voters , Hillary a big pull for the Dems, and Sarah thrilling everyone...
and you all still are talking about Newt???
Newt needs to step aside. I watched both of them during the campaign and while Newt often has smart things to say I think he is damaged goods and I think the RNC needs a new face. Steele has a good demeanor and deals well with the opposition on TV.
Steele would be a hard-driving executive. Gingrich has a great analytical mind, and is a good speaker (explicator), but I fear his reflective, analytical, and may I say “professorial” manner, is better suited for the role of background intellectual than for mover and shaker.
Google Michael Steele “on the issues”.
I couldn’t find his stance on Global Warming, a deal killer for me for any “Republican” who buys this scam.
Some disturbing news about Assault Weapons though, here’s Michael Steele’s quote on Assault Weapons from the “on the issues” website.
Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you’re going hunting? That’s overkill. But I don’t think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what’s the point of passing gun laws if we’re not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that’s where you need to start. We’ve got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it’s about how we enforce the law.
Palin/Steele
Newt could cut thru the noise, deliver a message over the enemy to the people. I don't care who does it. But He was once effective.
#1 Acknowledge you have an enemy and identify the enemy.
#2 Develop a sound plan to defeat this insurgent group an their followers
#3 You've planed your work. work your plan. Win. No excuses
It’s a mistake to try to identify issues and then run on them. That’s pandering and it’ll never work. The Dems have way more practice lol. You run on principle, you run on truth. You run on the real America. What you do is show the public that GOP/conservative issues ARE their issues.
I beg to differ on your point about Newt. His failings are well-known and well-documented, but the man knows the political landscape better than a lot of the current crop of talking heads, and is IMO invaluable in the future of the GOP.
Michael Steele is for the Assault Weapons Ban.
Is there ANY conservatives left in America.
We need to:
Fight the Global Warming Scam
Come out AGAINST McCain-Feingold
Fight for Election Reform
Drill Everywhere
Strong 1st and 2nd Amendment
For starters...
Thanks for the link. If I’m reading it correctly, it looks like he gets his lowered conservative score from his liberal stances on affirmative action.
1. one who is a proven leader.
2. able to organizes professionals and volunteers into motivated campaigners, people who work with a passion for conservatism.
3. a record of training and supervising an army of effective fund raisers.
4. able to expound the conservative cause without looking over the shoulder, no PC, speak the truth loud and clear. No weaseling around and parching of words.
In other words, the best leader in the country must step forward. The record of experience in all categories is vitally important
If Steele is that man, than so be it. If not - not.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!!
Abortion is a little shaky too.
“Roe v. Wade should stay in place.”
That being said, as RNC Chair, he’d have more of an organizing, fundraising role than a “come up with ideas” role.
hmmmm, if he were white who here would even know his name, the GOP and many here just can't get enough of the Color Game can they?
let me guess, the media and blacks will just adore how we have a black guy at RNC now...lol
Steele is pretty conservative and pro-life but if he weren't black he'd be lost in the white haze of second and third tier
we are only marginally different from what we oppose
