Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has decided to run for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee and is in talks with Newt Gingrich to win the former House speaker's endorsement, FOX News learned Tuesday.
Steele declined to comment, but a source close to the situation said Steele would announce his candidacy as early as Thursday.
The source also contradicted a report in Tuesday's Washington Times that Steele and Gingrich were competing for the RNC post.
"There is no fight," the source said. "This tension between Michael Steele and Newt Gingrich is totally fabricated and, in fact, Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP."

“My only concern is can Steele build the party at the grassroots level, build party infrastructure, and raise cold hard cash?”
The grassroots and party infrastructure needs to be rebuilt by conservatives & constitutionalists in the grassroots. Not by establishment Republican liberals like Steele.
The cash will come when the Republican party returns to its limited government, conservative roots. This will not happen if liberals like Steele or insiders like Gingrich take the helm.
And you will teach the country morals before it slides down the drain from its other woes.
Battles that can be won, with the right representatives in Congress, would be balanced budgets, fiscal restraint, secure borders ... just to mention three.
These other lesser things will like occur long before overturning an unconstitutional USSC decision.
“Steele is a moderate.”
“Moderate” is a word used by liberals to describe liberals.
This combination, Steele/Gingrich, could have an awesome impact! Gingrich as the “educator”, and Steele with his ability to connect with people.
RENEW! RENEW! RENEW!
No, but I won't sacrifice mine for the sake of political expediency.

We lost on these issues, except for maybe the borders, with Pubs in a majority! I think the answer to why is obvious. They lacked a moral foundation having replaced it with political calculation.
I know Steele is pro-life, and I’m almost positive he’s pro-gun too.
If you have info to the contrary, please provide a source or a link.
Among the names mentioned, Newt is the most experienced and senior political organizer - which is exactly what the RNC needs.
He created GOPAC - the organization that Steele now leads.
Newt is my first choice but I believe that Steele could do a decent job.
Does Newt know how to do any of this in 2008? He thought is was a good idea to sit on a couch with Nan...
The party needs a new direction, a better focus on the issues and youth. Not gray hair and old party politics. The core is what it is and what it always will be, but the Kitchen Table issues are important too. We can't continue to run on a 1982 platform and be surprised that most casual political observers have no clue what we stand for. I'm 31, and I will die a hard core Republican with a firm belief in small government, capitalism and the defense of our nation...but my friends don't care about politics and make fun of me for watching Fox News and reading Free Republic religiously on my lunch break. Those are the people that think politics aren't sexy and those are the people that believe the left when they hear we are intolerant fundamentalist Christians. That has to change if we want to get anywhere.
I never said he didn’t have abilities. However he is the old guard. We need new blood in the RNC. We need a house cleaning. Newt can be helpful outside the RNC in reaching the public and educating them without an official position in any party structure..
Let me get this straight. Newt who, after a dem opeative illegally recorded him saying things he allegedly was not supposed to be saying, cut and ran. He is now running for RNC Chairman. Then a fella named steele pops from Delaware viing for the same job or cojob or whatever. A pubbie who manages to win an elected office in Delaware is nothing more than a moderate democrat—same as Romney, former Massachusettes governor.
How exactly am I, a conservative, supposed to feel good about that.
Come on folks. The GOP just got creamed because it (1) refuses to run conservative candidates and (2) does not support pubbies who try to oppose the democrats.
It is beginning to appear to me that Free Republic is more a refuge for RINOs than conservatives.

I said that because you were acting childish with the pick up your ball and go home advice. LOL. I think we are 98% in agreement on this, which is a lot closer than most of the pols in office now. I even forget the original point of dispute. Must be a senior moment. I have those with increasing frequency these days. I think I have a personal moral conflict with abortion. But I have a blood conflict with allowing this country to be subject to attack either from within or from the outside. I think I'd side with a politician that supported me more on the latter than the former. I suspect that may be where our lines of reasoning diverge.
If so, tis but a small issue. No hard feelings.
So, when you say "God and Country" you are being redundant?
You don’t have the country you believe in or the constitution.
You have Obamaland or Russia but not America!
We are talking in circles and it is useless. You see one thing and will not look elsewhere.
Michael Steele: anti-gun, pro-abortion and total phony.
Steele supports existing and new gun control:
http://www.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Michael_Steele_Gun_Control.htm
Q: Your views on gun control?
A: My views are pretty much in line with the governor’s. I grew up under some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don’t enforce them, people are going to find a way to protect themselves. We need to recognize that bad people are doing bad things with these weapons. It’s not the law-abiding citizens, it’s not the person who uses it as a hobby.
Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you’re going hunting? That’s overkill. But I don’t think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what’s the point of passing gun laws if we’re not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that’s where you need to start. We’ve got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it’s about how we enforce the law.
Steele is pro-abortion

Q: Would you hope the US Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade?
A: My desire is that we follow what stare decisis is at this point.
NO, No, NO, let Newt have it...we need Steele for office!!!!
No, John McCain and Jorge Boosh and the liberal Republican establishment gave us Obama.
Sound like the sound of hope to me. We need to fight back with an alternative to abyss of hate, corruption, and fear that Obama and his comrades are shoveling to a desperate and confused America.
We must have a powerful, optimistic, definite plan. Newt and Steele are men with the vision to pull that off me thinks...
No they helped. The American people decided.
We can not have it all every time. Cause when we decide that no principle is more important than the next principle and must achieve total acceptance of all ... we have set ourselves up for defeat.
America has been moving left over the past years. Sometimes slower than others. We appear, with 52% of the vote this time around, that America is a left of center country.
We can not reverse that over night. It must be done one step at a time, not one giant leap. It will take time to realign all the principles the way they should be ... right of center.
“Is that pro choice??”
A politician with Steele’s views on abortion will not impose a single meaningful restriction on abortion at any level, state or federal.
True pro-lifers are not taken in by the wordsmithing, rhetorical twists & contortions, not to mention lies and wicked deception perpetrated by pro-abortion Republicans posing as pro-lifers.
Because at the end of the day, the innocent preborn are still being murdered.
