EXCLUSIVE: Gingrich, Steele duel for RNC chair
The Washington Times ^ | November 11, 2008 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 11/10/2008 2:46:59 PM PST by BAW

A battle to take the reins of the Republican National Committee is taking off between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele.

Republicans close to each man say they are intent on ousting Mike Duncan when his tenure ends in January and to insert themselves to articulate a counter-agenda to President-elect Barack Obama´s administration.

A bevy of backers for each man, neither of whom is an RNC member, have been burning up the phone lines and firing off e-mails as they try to sway the 168 RNC members in the wake of the second consecutive drubbing of Republicans at the polls.

"The Republican National Committee has to ask itself if it wants someone who has successfully led a revolution," Randy Evans, Gingrich confidante and personal attorney based in Atlanta, told The Washington Times on Monday.

Neither man seems inclined to give way to the other.

the common perception that the Republican party is made up of only rich wrinkly white men needs to be attacked.

Not picking up the water bucket for either one right now, but this is a very important point you make. We have a serious perception problem. Someone like Steele could help with that. And he's a pretty good guy on top of it.

I don’t know much about Steele.

And I doubt much of America does either.

At this juncture the GOP needs someone to get front and center calling the Democrats to account. Newt is one that could do this for the next few years. We don’t need someone that is reserved, quite and a get along type. I’m not sure what mold Steele fits into but I do know that Newt isn’t reserved, quite and a get along type.

Wasn’t Steele the chairman of the MD GOP? Hopefully he is good at organizing and strategy. Another poster said he was dull. I disagree. He is very personable and telegenic. I think he would be good for the job.

Were it not for Gingrich I don’t think Republicans would have taken control in 1994. Too bad he is not where Boehner is now. I think he would be good as chairman. BUT—I suspect the Dems and their media arm will trash all his past personal failures, and paint him as a far right wing devil, as they did in the past.

Both of these men are good. The GOP has to stop being the Dem-lite party it was under Bush and the current leadership.

Newt is an idea man. The GOP definitely needs an infusion of new ideas.

I like both men but I want someone who will be on TV e.v.e.r.y day and get in their face e.v.e.r.y day and I think that this fits Newt best. I’d like for Steele to get the national coverage he could use, but the job is too important. We’ve have so many under-the-horizon names lately that I think that’s one reason we have lost so many supporters and lost our way.

Is anyone else getting calls from American Solutions with a message from Newt. I contributed, but wondering if anyone else did...

Please, Atwater was the author of the Big Tent that turned the GOP into a three-ring circus, replete with RINOs. Never again!

This position is much more than policy as I see it. Policies become or come from the candidates when they are chosen. This position needs to build the base and keep it fired up, raise money, put together teams to focus on the democrats, stay in the public eye as much as possible, etc.

Steele as captain of the ship; Newt as his XO.

The GOP has to stop being the Dem-lite party it was under Bush and the current leadership.

Considering the squishiness of these guys, and the fact that they've both constituted what you could call "the current leadership" in the Republican Party, this all doesn't make much sense to me.

When I hear a Freeper say you have to compromise and support a man who doesn’t agree with you on 100% of everything, what I have in mind is supporting someone I agree with 90% of the time (like Newt) rather than someone I agree with 10% of the time (like Dubya, or McCain).

Global warming. Government health care. Government "solutions" in education.

The things that pass for "conservatism" these days amaze me.

Christine Todd Whitman, RINO:

"She is also co-chair of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC), which she founded with Senator John Danforth and Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. The RLC’s mission is to support fiscally conservative, socially tolerant candidates and to reclaim the word Republican. The RLC was created in March of 2007 by joining forces with Governor Whitman’s political action committee, It’s My Party Too. She is the author of a New York Times best seller by the same name, which was published in January of 2005 and released in paperback in March 2006."

thanks for the feedback Bahbah,

I have been a strong vocal proponent of “just get out our base and who cares about shifting demographics” the last three election cycles. But even I have to admit the writing is on the wall; we have to re-brand the party and destroy this perception that we are a bunch of rich white racists. The left has done a very acute job of painting that picture and I give them credit for it.

I’m happy to know that we have two good candidates that want the job. Newt is made for that job, but I like Steele, too. Co-chairs?

Gingrich is eliminated for his pro Global Warming stance, don’t know where Steele is on this.

Gingrich would serve us best as a strategist behind the scenes, nationalizing the 2010 elections as he did in 1994.

Why the “Republican” Party hasn’t nationalized House and Senate elections using the copious amount of treasonous, outrageous comments and actions of liberals is beyond me. A reasonably smart teenager with the proper software can make enough commercials using libs OWN WORDS to make them a permanent minority/fringe party.

I can only conclude that there are TRAITORS in our party.
