What happens if you take out $10k and travel with it?

What actually happens? Is it a matter of just filling out forms or seizure of your money?

But be aware that south of the border, El Presidente might freeze your dollar accounts or convert them to devaluing pesos at any time. THis happened in Argentina in 2001, and millions who had their savings in dollar accounts were wiped out.

I’d suggest gold, but that’s me.

“Once we’re there, I’ll repaint Guajira’s hull. Blue maybe. And we’ll have to change her name… Then after the islands, we’ll head for South America, maybe Brazil or Venezuela, or Colombia.”

“What about our passports? What if the government’s after us? We’ll be fugitives, won’t we?”

“Ranya, you only need passports at airports. With sailboats, it’s a whole different world out there.”

“Just pay your way in cash, and don’t make problems?”

“You’ve got it. Keep a low profile, and keep moving. It’s called being a ‘PT.’ It means you’re just passing through, you’re a permanent tourist, and you’re practically transparent. For lots of people it means prior taxpayer…and if you want to keep it that way, you have to be privacy trained. That’s being a ‘PT.’ We can buy papers and new vessel documents when we get to some islands I know in the Caribbean. Citizenship is cheap some places, you can pick any name you want.”

Ranya laughed again. “So we’re going to wind up in a Colombian prison is what you’re saying, some place like Devil’s Island.”

From Enemies Foreign And Domestic, my first novel.

Did you deposit cash or checks? Was your account actually frozen or was an exception hold put on the deposit? Were you a "problem" customer - constantly overdrawn? Did you normally keep low balances then suddenly deposit the $10,000? These are all things that bank managers look at when deciding to put a hold on a deposit. As for simply freezing the account because you deposited $10,000 - that doesn't sound right. What bank was it?

I've been in banking for 8 years, so have a little experience in this area.

I have been making arrangements for quite some time now. All nice and legal. I wouldn’t even consider going South of the border!

I’d consider it, but only as part of a moving target strategy.

I don’t see any reason to deal with thieves.

That will get a serious IRS full review. If it smells even a little bit expect to hire a tax attorney to worm you out.
