Just possibly they could teach the Chicago Outfit a thing or two about corruption. A good read on that subject is The Paradise Conspiracy by Ian Wishart. True story. Lawyers, Guns and Money, also by Wishart. Thirty Pieces of Silver by Tony Molloy QC a technical examination of tax fraud, also a true story.
It is my first post in over 18 months.
In addition, "Absolute Power" by Ian Wishart is also invaluable about the nasty stuff. You will also find that Helen Clark is almost like a twin of Hillary Clinton and so many parallels between the two: both grow up in middle class families, both fathers are conservatives and active in the conservative party politics, both were anti-Vietnam war activists when young, both are married but there are persistent information both are in fact lesbians.
I won’t be too optimistic because this National government has inherited a Labour government that has re-regulated the electricity industry by a US-state style electricity commission, re-regulated the telco industry, re-nationalized rail and airline (Air New Zealand).
In fact you will find the same people who happily voted out Labour also cheered for Obama a few days before that. I posted something dissing Obama on personal website and rumours started flowing around my workplace saying I’m a “right-wing madman”.
My understanding is that most of the NZ Left isn’t too unhappy about the result because “Well, we progressives have now conquered the USA, losing New Zealand isn’t too bad end of the deal” and also John Key is more David Cameron or Richard Nixon than Roger Douglas or Ronald Reagan.
Quite a lot of middle people tend to be contratarians - same with Canada - when it comes to American. They see Obama elected in the US, so they accordingly move right in NZ.
Please read this before deciding to settle in New Zealand. Don’t want you both to overexpect because most of fellow Americans who have settled in NZ are Ralph Nader or Noam Chomsky supporters and cheer for Obama:

North Americans
Why do North Americans come to New Zealand today?
Employment is only one attraction, especially as the internet makes distance-working possible. Many North Americans seek a relaxed lifestyle, temperate climate and opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Others appreciate New Zealands pro-environment image and support the anti-nuclear policy. And a few are driven by a taste for adventure an impulse that brought many of their predecessors to New Zealand.
Indeed the ‘right’ in most of the world isn’t up to my standards but I prefer it to the socialist alternative.
