The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.
But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.
The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.
Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"
The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.
Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."
Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.

“Having a little trouble convincing others today, are we? Hmmmmm.... tsk, tsk.”
*shrug*
I know what I heard from clearwater...I know what I read from silverman that directly supported what I heard..
That someone yelled “Kill him” about ayres in florida (not PA)...that it was determined not to be a threat to Obama...
Beliefs are not germain to the facts...facts dont require belief..they just are...
Wanna be snide and smarmy about it...be my guest...
I stand by my statements.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a confirmed kill.
Now that I've dispatched that lying punk, I'm going to have the crew chief paint another red star on the canopy rail. Oohrah!
Why are you contining to ignore the source that says there was no “kill him” shout?
What’s at stake for you?
How come I never heard any of this at the rallies I was at??? People were happy, dancing and full of smiles.
ONE reporter comes up with this, which the Secret Service DID NOT hear, and neither did anyone else and suddenly it's gospel. Sick sick people in the media.
“Why are you contining to ignore the source that says there was no kill him shout?
Whats at stake for you?”
#1..becuase I heard it.
#2..becuase your other source confirmed it.(how can a shout be determined to not be a threat if it never happened?)
#3..becuase I trust my eyes, ears, and brain to survive my trade as an electician.
There is no ambiguity in electricity.
#4 check your mail and give me a hand on something eh.
A reporter who forgot his recorder......how convenient.
Excuse my language but this is a Crock of S**t.
This has already been debunked by the SS, so we know this whole article is essentially shite. You can tell by the high dudgeon of the media that they fear Palin. They are trying to beat her down so that she never wants to run for high office again. they might succeed.
BS!
The USSS never spills it’s guts on anything!
BJ Clinton would have had his ass handed to him if this were true!
I just sent an email to the US Secret Service telling them of their obligation to speak to the American people on this issue which is so deeply important.
You should email or call them, too.
Shocking!
Well, it's a good thing you're not an editor.
Wishing you and this topic a cordial farewell. Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.
At last! A sane solution on this thread! Thank you for the great suggestion.

Very intellectual of you I must say...you forgot to say nyah nyah...
Its going to be fun watching the MSM go into shock when they realize he doesn't pee champaign.
Well, let’s call it a night.
Surprised that the Telegraph would print this crap and especially the totally misleading headline.
Most of the smears against Gov. Palin have been disproven, but what the hell, why not keep “the lie alive”.
It is no wonder that England is going down the crapper (Sir Thomas is spinning in his grave). Their leadership stinks, their laws stink, they kiss Moslems asses every time they fart, and their publications are only good for bird-cage liners, and yet they think that they are the saviors of western civilization.
Boy, have they failed history, and are now being dumped on the junkpile of history by the muzzies and their communist allies.
Goodby old lion. Time to put you down!
“Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: “Why would they try to make people hate us?” “
No one tried to make anyone hate you Michelle.
They did try to inform voters about your ideas and associations.
In previous elections, these things used to be considered important.
I wonder if they warned the Palin family after she was nominated of the increase in the number of threats against her.
Uhmm, could there be a correlation between the likelihood of being elected and the number of threats one receives?
In fact, I'm willing to bet the Secret Service is aware of the correlation ... that might explain why they assign so many more agents to major party nominees than they do to fringe candidates or major party primary candidates.
This is just more pap and nonsense from the left wing media designed to goad the ignorant masses into demanding restraints on free speech. What's scary is that it will probably work.
This is all President-Elect Obamas fault.
Yes, and remember bow your head as you say HIS name and to hum a chorus of a Gregorian Chant afterwards.
