The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.
But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.
The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.
Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"
The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.
Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."
Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.

Thanks for the ping to that! So that makes “zero” substantiated claims of “kill him.”
Thanks.
Glad to!
The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth. So help me GOD.
Who the heck wrote this piece of junk? No wonder Europe has such a bad image of America. This screwball journalist makes us all look like Klan members. I’m glad I don’t spend any time reading people like this author.
Man, now they’re accusing Sarah Palin of fomenting assassination attempts. With no evidence. We’re getting smeared overseas.
Obama’s associations are well known, and they are what they are. Nobody wants anyone to even remotely discuss assassination.
Make no mistake: if some whack job goober takes a shot at Obama, all Republicans and conservatives will be blamed for it.
Ok...sorry for yelling...this is YOUR article you posted as “proof” that no one yelled “kill him “ in florida:
First and third paragraph....read carfully..
A caller to the Tribune has confirmed hearing a shout of Kill him from a crowd member at a Sarah Palin rally in Clearwater on Monday, but the U.S. Secret Service says it has not found any indication that a threat toward Barack Obama was intended.
After a Tampa Tribune story on the incident in Fridays paper, several attendees from the rally called the Tribune to describe what they knew about it.
One woman who was standing near the traveling press gallery, the location of the reporter who wrote about the incident, said she heard the shout of Kill him from a man close to her, but that it appeared to refer to William Ayers, not Obama.
At the time of the incident, Palin was criticizing Obama for his relationship with Ayers, a former anti-Vietnam War radical whos now a neighbor and political supporter of Obama.
The caller who confirmed the shout left a name but no phone number in two voice-mail messages to the Tribune, and couldnt be located for further comment.
Two other callers, who said they were standing in a part of the crowd away from the apparent location of the incident, said they heard a man near them shout, Tell em, which could have been mistaken for Kill him, at the time of the incident.
The shout isnt audible on television recordings of the event, which use a sound system connected to the speakers microphone and pick up little of the crowd sound. The local press gallery was located some distance away from the traveling press and the apparent site of the incident.
Reporter Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, who was in the traveling press gallery, reported the incident in a story Oct. 7. In interviews following his story, he said the shout could have been a reference to Ayers, not Obama.
In his story, Milbank also said crowd members near his location taunted reporters as they arrived, hurled obscenities at a camera crew, and that one person shouted a racial epithet, Sit down, boy, at a black broadcast crew member.
The rally attendee near Milbanks location said in her voice-mail messages that there were back-and-forth comments between the crowd and the reporters, but denied that obscenities or the word boy were used.
Ok...they investigated both...but found no “kill him” in PA...
AND that the “kill him” in florida was directed at ares not obama...
Right form your own article...
as I said...
I dont know why they are claiming it’s inaudable on the tape...as I clearly heard it also...
Right after Palin said ayres had bombed the pentagon...
The guy yells “kill him”
IMHO..kill him (ayres) is the correct responce anyways.
How are our archives? We can make sure that whoever we run in 2012 can make sure that we never forget.
They are totally terrified of Sarah for any puture position she may desire.
The Democraps are digging more and more dirt, aren’t they?
How deep is a grave?
They are totally terrified of Sarah for any future position she may desire.
The Democraps are digging more and more dirt, aren’t they?
How deep is a grave?
Yes, PC Brits, blame Sarah Palin instead of the mentally unbalanced racists who can’t handle the truth in a civilized manner. Why don’t you all just roll over for the muslims and get it over with already!
First, I posted that article to prove that the Florida incident was investigated. But yes, while we're at it, I've stated that I believe the Secret Service's investigation of these events over your account. I simply believe you've gotten it wrong. I stand by that assessment of the evidence.
Second...so the Trib has one caller who said that the guy said "kill him" and somehow this outweighs the Secret Service and the callers who said he didn't say "kill him." On top of that, the version Milbank gives is different from the local caller in another important detail.
And you don't see anything wrong with that? I mean, eyewitness accounts can be expected to vary, but still...one person confirms part of Milbank's story and that's supposed to make us trust Milbank over the Secret Service and two opposing witnesses?
I dont know why they are claiming its inaudable on the tape...
Because the press sucks. When they aren't lying, they're usually getting stuff abyssmally wrong, like that Newsweek report claiming that Sarah Palin would appear with John Sunnunu (a 100% pro-lifer) because of his hardcore pro-chice record. Any idiot knows you can hear crowd noise over those microphones, so apparently these reporters don't even rise to the level of idiocy.
Sorry, but I'm still believing the Secret Service and not taking any guff over it. If you take that as a personal attack or something, that's your problem.
I’m not sure how far back we can go, I know JimRob has the data but don’t know if it’s accessible.
A grave is usually six feet deep.
I’m betting they dig at least 8 or 10 feet down.
Sure, everyone else in the crowd never heard it but a woman standing near the press gallery did. Maybe it came FROM THE PRESS GALLERY as if that could never happen!
Sorry, but I couldn't give a flying leap what someone yelled at a political rally. It might matter if the MSM applied the same standards to the Obama rallies where Sarah Palin was called everything under the sun (and sometimes that came from the MSM too)!
I remember hearing/reading a report that the SS had gone over videotapes of the rallies and NEVER found a single person shouting ‘kill him’—although there was an instance where someone shout TELL him...sounds like made up crap here.
here’s what was provided as “proof” that no one yelled Kill him in florida:

The SS isnt saying there was no shout in florida...only that the shout wasnt a threat on Obama..
As I have steadilty maintained....because I heard in with my own ears...
There was a shout in florida...it was directed at ayres.
you do realise that the media in America are no better
the media no matter where they hail are biased, corrupt and completely in the tank for obama
of they had done their job and investigated all the multiple voting, voter fraud, illegal money, million upon millions of it
if they had investigated obama’s birth certificate, real connections to radicals
then obama would not be where he is in fact he would not even be the Dem nominee
