The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.
But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.
The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.
Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"
The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.
Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."
Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.

Yes indeed Palin is a huge threat to Obama.
Every day we get new news of just how big a threat the MSM feels she is to their plans for this nation.
It turns out that Mr Shipman has a small "Biden problem". Read this blog:
The Republican leadership brings her into the spot light at the 23rd hour. Maybe she made mistakes maybe she didn’t. At this point in time I haven’t seen one accusation that can be verified.
In my opinion she did a good job of motivating the base. Let’s face it, many of us were only supporting McCain with Lukewarm enthusiasim.
Now that its all done, everyone is throwing daggers at her. Whether you support Sarah or not, as a Republican aren’t you wondering why there isn’t anyone coming out to defend her. Currently, I think the only person giving Sarah a chance is Gretta for FOX.
Where is our party leadership? Do we have any party unity at all anymore? Throwing someone under the bus is one thing, I don’t think she even qualifies as road kill anymore. One final question, are the good ole boys that are left in our party really that frightened of Sarah Palin?
SS: Well Mr. KKK, why did you decide that now was the time to go after Mr. Obama?
KKK: Uh, to tell the truth, we went to a Sarah Palin rally, and she was so clear about the danger posed by this Obama fella, that we went to the gun shop and then straight to the planning stage. We take all our most important orders from the Vice Presidential Nominee of the Republican Party, especially if she is a woman.
BULL$HIT!
Barry did it.
The big O got in the way.
It's bama time.
There is a special circle in hell for hateful lying shysters covering terrorist @$$es and trying to assail a decent and lovely woman’s reputation in such a vile and horrendous way.
Didnt Michelle herself say that it was dangerous for
Barak to go and pump gas because he was a black man?
I remember her using that exact tone and she was serious.
I think we will simply see what we saw in 1996, but far more intense. The Clinton-Media alliance easily labeled any opinion to the right of Joe Lieberman as dangerous, intolerant and unpatriotic. The ATF/FBI were used in horrifying ways and talk radio was maligned as ‘hate radio’ inciting violence. Several terrible incidents - Oklahoma City, the Matthew Sheppard murder, and possibly TWA 800 - were distorted to fit a political narrative. I remember ‘96 clearly (I was 22) as the year I woke up and became conservative/libertarian.
This is how they will go after talk radio, ‘fundamentalists’ and the NRA again. The White House and media will distort something that happens and blame it on us. I hope that the rise of alternative media is more prepared to uncover and spread the truth this time around. It will be nothing new, but this time around they’ll have the added ability to frame passionate opposition as ‘racist’.
It’s called Newspeak and it has been placed into practice not only by the President Elect but by the media. Trouble is, reality still rules and Chavez, Putin, Ahmamurderijad and the rest of the new Facists are just chomping at the bit to bring our Libertarian Republic to its knees.
Hey SS officers - our new president is a white-hating Marxist and an enemy of freedom. But you already know that.
what utter BS.
they want to make her look bad because she could kick the snot out of him in a head to head election. They will be on her tail from now till 2012
First of all the “Kill Him” charge has been proven false, no one said that at any GOP rally.
Second, this is standard crazy lefty procedure. They blamed Rush Limbaugh for Oklahoma city. Those who dare criticize the left are always portrayed as stirring up the peasants against their rightful rulers.
OK take those croocks at THEIR OWN STUPID WORDS and reverse it...If you push their bright argument further ONE COULD SAY THAT OSSAMABAMA HIMSELF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEATH THREATS AGAINST HIMSELF
>>>The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of “palling around with terrorists”, citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
Soon, reading Mr. Obama’s resume in public will be a hate crime.
Total BS from the leftist UK broad sheet.
Saracuda had nothing to do with my thoughts on what I’d like to see happen to this radical, un-American socialist thug who has been elected president.
