America Held Hostage- the Obama Files...
With a hattip to Rush ( His idea during the Clinton plague upon America ) I am starting a file on The One, mostly starting from the election date.
Older stuff- links, quotes, quips, and sometimes pointed graphics can be found by scrolling back from these two posts:
-Hillary Clinton- archives, comments, and opposition research--
-Sarah Palin- links, from the beginning--
There is some good material in those posts that raises a lot of uncomfortable questions that everyone ought to be asking, and probably will once the new wears off, and we are stuck with four ( more likely eight, since 95% of the news & entertainment media are in his pocket ) years of a typical corrupt Chicago Political Machine Politician trying to jerk the whole country in one direction and then the next.
You've all heard the saying,
People get the kind of government they want...
...and deserve?
Well, America, you are about to get it, good & hard...
Don't say you weren't warned- we tried to tell you...
We did everything we could, and our state went for the Old Guy & the Naughty Librarian, but too many other voters were made stupid by the TV and public schools for it to matter.
We're in a Hell of a mess, and the worst thing is, "we"- the collective we, not you & I-- got us here.
Is Obama really the Abyss...
staring back at us?
I like to make points with humorous graphics- this one sums it up as well as any:
Then, in a nutshell, "everything I see going bad with all this hopi- changi- stuff The One is peddling-- forced labor, censorship, spin, and pure mean-spirited rudness:
Atlas readers rock! I am blown away by the overwhelming response to this post (and this one) to get involved to take back our country from the Soros, socialists, and the self proclaimed messiah - oy. More than one email brought a tear to my eye but I wanted to share this one with you.
If this best represents who we are, what we want and where we are going, there is no way we can lose. Greatness is in the house. I am proud to count you as my friends. Prouder still to stand with you and fight this great fight.
I want to lead a county.
I was born in Cuba, and know the language of Communism, Obama speaks it well. My grandfather's family had to flee Lebanon because of the Muslims to Cuba. We fled Cuba because of Castro.
This is the best country in the whole wide world. I was a child when I left Cuba with the clothe on my back, we left my parent's sister and I, left behind everything.
America is Worth fighting for and Freedom is worth defending. I do not want my children to grow up in oppression, nor do I wish exile upon them.
Please allow me to help, again, Id like to lead a county.
My name is Ingrid and Im in Miami, in Miami Dade County
May the Light always shine upon America,

You people are pathetic!
Your racist fear mongering will not go unchallenged! Soon we will shut down your hate spewing web sites. We will confiscate your firearms. In prison, you will get an education on the error of your ways. We will take your children and raise them as our own and instill in them the values of social justice. Faster, please!
PAUL MULSHINE BLOWS IT. In this Wall Street Journal column, he manages to conflate punditry with reporting (following in Nick Lemanns footsteps) while simultaneously engaging in a bit of misleading quotage that thoroughly undercuts his point.
My point, as quoted in his column, is that punditry is easy, but that reporting is harder, and more valuable, and not done enough by Big Media. In making the point, I quoted another blogger, whom Mulshine doesnt identify because the blogger I quoted was Iraq documentarian and blogger J.D. Johannes, who in fact does real reporting of the sort that Big Media folks all too often dont. As J.D. comments:
I do not know why Mr. Mulshine did not give my name. If he had, it would undercut many of his statements. A news man of his esteem would have surely googled me and found that I was doing exactly what he says bloggers are not doing and nearly beating a major Hollywood director and billionaire .
(Or perhaps he did google me and for some reason thought I was not the type to read the Wall Street Journal.)
The hear-say quote, and this particular usage by Mr. Mulshine, is one of the reasons why blogs have succeededthe core news consumer does not like hear-say quotes and does not want bland executive summaries for the casual reader. The core news consumer wants hard news without bias and expert opinion.
Mr. Mulshines use of a misleading hear-say quote explains well the demise of his beloved newspaper.
It seems that often when big-media types write about the failings of blogs, they engage in the kind of lazy inaccuracy they condemn. In an earlier column, Mulshine wrote:
Anyone can travel to a war zone and write about it. I would strongly recommend this for any of the critics of the MSM who are seeking to get out the real truth about Iraq. Go for it, guys. War coverage is great fun. One word of caution, though: Dont lose your heads in all the excitement.
That, of course as Mulshine should have known then, and now is exactly what J.D. Johannes does along with Michael Yon, Michael Totten, Bill Roggio, and others in the blogosphere. Mulshine, meanwhile, brags about having once covered the Toms River Regional Board of Education in New Jersey. Thats worthy work, of course, but if his reportage there was as poor as his work in the Wall Street Journal, then oh, who am I kidding? If?
Anyway, its certainly true that bloggers as a class are more competition for careless pundits like Mulshine than for go-getter reporters who find out things that people dont know, and report them truthfully. Its also true that those go-getter reporters who put the truth first are pretty scarce in the world of Big Media reporting, and that management shows no sign of wanting more of them, and many signs of wanting attitude-mongers like, well, Mulshine. This is, as Ive noted before, a dumb business strategy, which explains in part why newspapers are doing so badly. For more on that, see this thoughtful piece by Evan Coyne Maloney. Also, these thoughts from Jay Rosen. And heres my diagnosis from 2002:
Though webloggers do actual reporting from time to time, most of what they bring to the table is opinion and analysis - punditry, in short. (No surprise here - people have been sharing opinions forever, and may well have an inborn drive to do so. Plus, you can opine without leaving your computer, while reporting hard news is hard work.)
This means that Big Media organizations should still have a strong competitive advantage where actual newsgathering is concerned. The problem is that most big organizations have cut back on newsgathering, treating news as a commodity product to be obtained from wire services while eliminating foreign and regional bureaus. Instead, Big Media organizations decided some years ago that they would focus on news analysis and punditry. Thats, well, because you can opine without leaving your computer, while reporting hard news is hard work. (And expensive).
Unfortunately, this hasnt worked out very well. The move to analysis and punditry was driven, in no small part, by corporate pressures to cut costs, pressures that accompanied the consolidation and corporatization of the news media. . . . But actual information about whats happening is still mostly the province of professional journalism, and thats less likely to change. I can imagine a decentralized amateur news service (a sort of Slashdot on steroids) but I think something like that will be slow in coming.
So there you are. Not that this will stop a future Mulshine (or Lemann) from repeating the same errors. Apparently, nothing does . . . .
UPDATE: A comment from Jay Rosen.

From the humor-impaired tone-deaf race-baiting unbiased Solons at Politico:
GOP mum on Magic Negro parody
By NIA-MALIKA HENDERSON | 12/27/08
A candidate for the Republican National Committee chair sent out a holiday CD to committee members that includes the song "Barack the Magic Negro," a parody first aired on Rush Limbaughs radio show.
Chip Saltsman, the former campaign manager for Mike Huckabee whos considered a long shot in the crowded field for RNC chair, is a friend of the songs writer, Paul Shanklin, a comedian and frequent Limbaugh guest [sic]. The CD, called "We Hate the USA," pokes fun at liberals, their causes, and their slip-ups with titles like "The Star Spanglish Banner," "Love Client #9" and "Wright Place, Wrong Time."
In a voice meant to recall Al Sharpton, Shanklin sings on the "Barack the Magic Negro": "Theyll vote for him and not for me, cause hes not from da hood. See, real black men like Snoop Dogg or me or Farrakhan have talked the talk and walked the walk, not come in late and won."
Limbaugh first aired the song, which draws on a column from the Los Angeles Times, on his show in 2007.
Calls and e-mails to Saltsman, a former advisor to Bill Frist, were not returned. In an interview with The Hill, he said the songs, among them "John Edwards, Poverty Tour," "Your Mommas So Fat" and "Duke Lacrosse," were meant simply as satires.
"Paul Shanklin is a longtime friend," Saltman told The Hill, "and I think that RNC members have the good humor and good sense to recognize that his songs for the Rush Limbaugh show are light-hearted political parodies."
To date, no Republican officials have condemned the CD.
Gosh, no Republicans have come forward to publically condemn someone for sending around a parody CD made by his friend.
A parody which employs an expression coined (or at least promulgated) by the LA Times columnist, David Ehrenstein (below left):
What a shock for Ms. Nia-Malika Hendersons (above right) delicate sensibilities.
And never mind that minutes later the Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan did issue a statement (wrongfully) condemning this innocent merriment.
By the way, lest anyone ever forget how far left The Politico leans, they should check out their Top Ten Political Scoops Of 2008.
Hint: half of these scoops involve reportage of the villainies of Sarah Palin or John McCain. (E.g., Palin not knowing the Bush doctrine, McCain and his houses.)
They only negative scoop listed by the Politico about Obama, his bitter clingers remark, was not even uncovered by a journalist. (Nor would it have ever been.)
And the number 10 most important scoop of 2008 turns out to have been Colin Powells endorsement of Mr. Obama. (What a scoop!)
Meanwhile, the true nature of Mr. Obamas spiritual mentor, the Reverend Doctor Wright which was really our scoop didnt even make the top five.
Needless to say, none of Joe Bidens gaffes, the illegal investigation of Joe The Plumber, or the amazing corruption of Mr. Blagojevich made the cut.

2008 Was The Year Man-Made Global Warming Was Disproved (Original Article)
MORE PEOPLE ARE BURNING COAL AT HOME, according to this report. We had a coal furnace when we lived in Heidelberg, and as a kid I enjoyed laying fires and stoking it. I suspect, though, that the thrill would have worn off in another year or two . . . .
UPDATE: Some related thoughts: Environmentalists must surely dislike coal on all fronts; widespread acceptance of coal for home heating makes it more difficult to argue against the fuel generally as an evil, environmental monster. After all, you cant concede that its OK for people to heat their homes with coal but then object to the use of an electric baseboard heater because the electricity is generated from burning coal.

The heart of the problem is we have a dumbed-down public that is obsessed with celebrity "news" and things of no consequence. So the media focus on what type of sandwich Obama had for lunch and what clothes his wife wore, etc. The same media that could not be bothered investigating Obama's associates are the same people who are obsessed with accurately listing the ingredients of the sandwich he ate for lunch. You will see this when the media cover politicians they support -- they ignore asking tough questions of policy and instead focus on "safe" questions like, "What did you eat for lunch?" and "What is your favorite food?" The media can pretend they are strictly covering Obama while they are only covering superficial, irrelevant things about Obama. And even these superficial things will be spun in the leftist politician's favor. If the politician is seen eating a sandwich, this is hailed as proof of how the politician is one of the common people. If the politician is seen eating caviar, he is praised for being sophisticated.
What bothers me is, Pres.-Select Obama already has this deer in the headlights look and he hasnt even moved into the Oval Office yet. I dont think he thought hed ever win the election.

You had better start paying attention, people:
With Rash of Scandals, Trust Is Gone. In Congress, prominent members such as House Ways and Means chair Charles Rangel, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens and Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson are either accused of malfeasance, officially charged with corruption or already convicted. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been accused of multiple acts of corruption, including extorting cash or jobs for filling President-elect Barack Obamas Senate seat. All of this is creating a growing sense of mistrust. But then Americans have always been suspicious of big institutions that can exert a lot of power.
So how about a little more suspicion of government expansion disguised as stimulus?
JENNIFER RUBIN: How Do You Fight Obamas New New Deal? A trillion dollar stimulus is going to create jobs, and the government will bailout failing industries (with additional debt funded by the Chinese, so long as they have an appetite for quickly depreciating dollars). If you think this sounds half-baked and suffers from historical amnesia, you are right. Despite the obvious shortcomings with this approach (e.g., its never worked before), the Republican Party so far isnt doing a very good job of coming up with alternatives. Plainly, they dont like the mounds of debt. And they are skeptical of a gigantic public works projects. But what could be done instead? There are some viable ideas.
A Voice Crying in the Wilderness Most law schools are breeding lawyers, some of whom ultimately become judges, who think the Constitution is whatever the judges say it is, no more, no less. When you have judges who believe such perfidy, and citizens who dont know any better, the Constitutions days are numbered.

I could very well see the USA falling apart in the next decade. We are stuck with debt we cannot possibly pay, there is a huge divide between parts of the country. Liberals on the coasts hate fly over country.
I highly recommend this book. It's not about civil war, but about the actual regions of America, and how we might just drift apart. It was written in 1981, and it reads for the most part like it was written last week. Four Stars in my book. Get a used copy from Amazon Marketplace for peanutes, or get it out of your library. But try to read it.
Here's what Ner0!, err, Zer0!, err, Duh!1® is facing:
Excellent editorial by the formidable Ambassador Dore Gold (hat tip Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff)
Did Israel Use "Disproportionate Force" in Gaza?
Dore Gold
- Israeli population centers in southern Israel have been the target of over 4,000 rockets, as well as thousands of mortar shells, fired by Hamas and other organizations since 2001. Rocket attacks increased by 500 percent after Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza Strip in August 2005. During an informal six-month lull, some 215 rockets were launched at Israel.
- The charge that Israel uses disproportionate force keeps resurfacing whenever it has to defend its citizens from non-state terrorist organizations and the rocket attacks they perpetrate. From a purely legal perspective, Israel's current military actions in Gaza are on solid ground. According to international law, Israel is not required to calibrate its use of force precisely according to the size and range of the weaponry used against it.
- Ibrahim Barzak and Amy Teibel wrote for the Associated Press on December 28 that most of the 230 Palestinians who were reportedly killed were "security forces," and Palestinian officials said "at least 15 civilians were among the dead." The numbers reported indicate that there was no clear intent to inflict disproportionate collateral civilian casualties. What is critical from the standpoint of international law is that if the attempt has been made "to minimize civilian damage, then even a strike that causes large amounts of damage - but is directed at a target with very large military value - would be lawful."
- Luis Moreno-Orampo, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, explained that international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court "permit belligerents to carry out proportionate attacks against military objectives, even when it is known that some civilian deaths or injuries will occur." The attack becomes a war crime when it is directed against civilians (which is precisely what Hamas does).
- After 9/11, when the Western alliance united to collectively topple the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, no one compared Afghan casualties in 2001 to the actual numbers that died from al-Qaeda's attack. There clearly is no international expectation that military losses in war should be on a one-to-one basis. To expect Israel to hold back in its use of decisive force against legitimate military targets in Gaza is to condemn it to a long war of attrition with Hamas.
Israel is currently benefiting from a limited degree of understanding in international diplomatic and media circles for launching a major military operation against Hamas on December 27. Yet there are significant international voices that are prepared to argue that Israel is using disproportionate force in its struggle against Hamas.
Israeli Population Centers Under Rocket Attack
There are good reasons why initial criticism of Israel has been muted. After all, Israeli population centers in southern Israel have been the target of over 4,000 rockets, as well as thousands of mortar shells, fired by Hamas and other organizations since 2001.1 The majority of those attacks were launched after Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza Strip in August 2005. Indeed, rocket attacks increased by 500 percent (from 179 to 946) from 2005 to 2006.
Moreover, lately Hamas has been extending the range of its striking capability even further with new rockets supplied by Iran. Hamas used a 20.4-kilometer-range Grad/Katyusha for the first time on March 28, 2006, bringing the Israeli city of Ashkelon into range of its rockets for the first time. That change increased the number of Israelis under threat from 200,000 to half a million.2 Moreover, on December 21, 2008, Yuval Diskin, Head of the Israel Security Agency, informed the Israeli government that Hamas had acquired rockets that could reach Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, and even the outskirts of Beersheba.3 The first Grad/Katyusha strike on Ashdod, in fact, took place on December 28. There had been no formal cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, but only an informal six-month tahadiya (lull), during which 215 rockets were launched at Israel.4 On December 21, Hamas unilaterally announced that the tahadiya had ended.

Hamas Charter (1988) The Charter of Allah: The Platform of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)
"Israel will rise and will remain erect until Islam eliminates it as it had eliminated its predecessors. The Islamic World is burning. It is incumbent upon each one of us to pour some water, little as it may be, with a view of extinguishing as much of the fire as he can, without awaiting action by the others"
The media is depraved. In reviewing the media coverage of Israel's counter defensive in Gaza it is impossible to digest the media's relentless handwringing over Jewish people defending themselves and their right to exist against unapologetic jihadis who vow to destroy the Jewish state. Ironically, a free media would cease to exist if the world press got their wish. Their heads would be hacked off if they spoke against the caliphate or worldwide jihad and yet they recklessly aid and abet the death of the greatest civilization in the history of mankind, the West.
While the Jews mop up after the world's willful stupidity, they relentlessly clubbed into submission/extinction. What part of 9/11, 7/7, 3/11, ll/26 don't these dhimmis understand?
This is the media's fault. They have deceived the public. The blood is on their guilty hands. Special honorable mention to the leftarded academics as well for brainwashing our kids leaving incapable of distinguishing between good and evil.

From from the inimitable New York Post:
In this file photo of May 20, 2004, Caroline Kennedy laughs at a joke by New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein, left, during a visit to Public School 11 in New York.
CAROLINES CRIB - SEN. HOPEFULS $50M SPREAD
By CHUCK BENNETT
December 29, 2008
Forget Chappaqua.
This amazing Marthas Vineyard spread will be the next home-away-from-the-Beltway for New Yorks junior senator if Caroline Kennedy is tapped to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The 366-acre estate - worth at least $50 million - just underwent a major renovation and rezoning that will keep it the exclusive province of Kennedy, 51.
Its also the spot where she got her first call to public service, six years before she launched her campaign for Hillary Clintons soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat.
In 2002, her houseguest, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, reportedly floated the idea of her coming on board the citys Department of Education as a fund-raiser.
Kennedy and her advocates have been relentlessly touting that two-year stint as qualifying her to be senator.
And the property, which mom Jackie Onassis purchased for $1.1 million in 1978, will make a perfect place for the senatorial hopeful to stealthily engage in political horse-trading as the manse cant be seen from either the beach or the edge of its 2,000-foot-long driveway.
When a little R&R is in order, theres 4,620 feet of oceanfront to play on.
The Kennedys just finished converting the 31 lots of land that make up the property into just seven with deed restrictions that limit subdivisions and development.
Five of the seven plots are for Caroline and her children, with the remaining two open to "non-Kennedys" if they ever decide to sell.
Money, however, will never be a worry. Caroline Kennedys personal fortune could exceed $400 million, according to C. David Heymann, author of "American Legacy: The Story of John and Caroline Kennedy."
Shes the beneficiary of a massive trust fund established by clan patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
This article also reminds us that Carolines fabled career in public service consists mostly of having once said oh, um, sure, you know
to a house guest.
It also reminds us that her trust fund was set up by Joseph Kennedy, whom some say managed things so that none of the children would ever have to pay taxes again.
Which may account for her refusal to disclose her finances until after she is selected Senator.

Bump Good job Backhoe. You should name it the O-Files and have a picture with Obama running with a brief case into the shadows looking back while wearing a ballcap with a big O on it and have tapes falling out of his trench coat with Bolgverich Tapes written on them in red with a couple of Paul Shanklin tapes plus have several phony birth certificates sticking out the sides of the brief case. Also have big commie hammer and sickle buttons on his trench coat. Hey he can get away with anything it seems. He could be his own Cigarette Smoking Man sort of split personality thing. lol
Have a good one and thanks for the links.

From the liberal playbook:
1) Create a bogeyman where none exists - in this case, gun shows make it easy to for criminals to get guns.
2) Create a catchy name for this bogeyman - gun show loophole.
3) Employ your accomplices to fabricate the dangers of this bogeyman studies and editorials
4) Convince spineless politicians to jump on your bandwagon through large contributions - Brady Campaign, Million Moms, etc
5) Pass legislation to restrict the bogeyman.
6) Find a new bogeyman.

Obama online supporters key to pushing his agenda
Tue Dec 30, 2008
By PHILIP ELLIOTT
HONOLULU - President-elect Barack Obamas top asset in pushing his agenda will not be his Cabinet secretaries or aides, but rather his online network.
Obamas political e-mail list tops 13 million names, a digital force that the incoming White House can tap to push for his legislation, tamp down critics or bolster popular support. Its also a way for Obama to reach into every state, every city, and every neighborhood.
A study released Tuesday found that a quarter of Obama voters said they would continue to work online to support the new administration. The nonpartisan Pew Internet and American Life Project also found 62 percent of Obamas voters say they would ask others to support Obamas policies.
Welcome to the Democrats new permanent campaign, one planned online and executed on Main Street.
If it works the way Obamas top lieutenants plan, the White House would marshal hundreds of thousands of phone calls within hours if it looked as if the president-elect were losing a policy battle. With the click of a keyboard, Obamas aides could ask supporters to flood the phone lines of Congress, making it untenable to ignore the clamor
Obamas online supporters raised some $500 million for him, created 2 million online profiles at MyBarackObama.com and used his database to make phone calls during the campaigns final days.
According to the Pew Research Center for People and the Press, 59 percent of all voters took part in the campaign online, whether it was sending e-mail, reading political blogs or researching candidates. Obama clearly had the advantage
Liberal groups in recent weeks have joined the plan. MoveOn in recent weeks sent an e-mail to some of its 4.2 million supporters asking them to get involved, for example.
If Obama and his allies play this right, they could send phone lines crashing within minutes of a declared protest. Similarly, the instant communication of the Internet and cellular phone text messages could end it just by typing one word: "Stop."
That power gives Obamas online advisers a potentially bigger role than many of his Cabinet picks and major hires in pushing through an agenda. A Cabinet secretary stumping for a new bill has been rendered less powerful than a million e-mails crashing the Capitol; a visit to the Hill from top aides is unmatched to online petitions that clog legislative offices
People often wonder where the untold millions Mr. Soros and his pals pour into the internet go.
Here is the answer. It pays for this army of internet drones.
And if you ever have any doubt, you can find their work product in the comments section of every major media outlet.

In the "scratch a Utopian, reveal a bloody-handed Totalitarian" dept:
But . . . What About the Pensions? [Dan Collins]
Via David Thompson, The Guardian wishes you and yours Happy Holidays:
Dreams of a planet unblemished by humanity are in fact remarkably common, at least in certain quarters. The biocentric conservationist Paul Watson is happy to describe humanity as a cancer and tells us that, while vegan diets are a good thing, curing the biosphere of the human virus will require a radical and invasive approach. Readers may recall another environmental crusader, Dr John Reid (mentioned here), whose plan to save the world from human beings entails putting something in the water specifically, a virus that would
make a substantial proportion of the population infertile. And while the good doctor is happy to share his view of all human life as an extraneous infestation of an otherwise pristine Earth, hes also insistent that affluent populations should be targeted first.
Last year, the Optimum Population Trust published a briefing paper, A Population-Based Climate Strategy, in which it was argued that couples having two children instead of three would reduce that familys carbon dioxide output by the equivalent of 620 return flights a year between London and New York. The OPT regards population growth as a failure of courage and leadership and mulls, albeit hesitantly, on the need for intervention by the state
in individual freedoms for the foreseeable future. OPT co-chairman, Professor John Guillebaud, claims: The greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the planet would be to have one less child.
Mr Dammann isnt entirely disapproving of such notions:
The followers of [VHEMT] take to its logical conclusion the observation that the population growth of the human species is unsustainable. Rather than waiting for nature to extinguish us by itself, which process will almost inevitably involve the destruction of many other species besides, we should initiate proceedings ourselves by refusing to have any more children
[T]here is something magnificent about the thought of an entire species simply switching itself off, without violence or force of anything other than will, to make way for something more lasting. It is unthinkable within the system of nature, unless as the conscious, involuntary corollary to a process that may be occurring anyway. But the absurdity lies not in the aim, which is in many ways laudable, but in the idea that the compassionate motivation in which it originates could possibly see the project through.
The problem, then, is not the premise of voluntary self-eradication, but merely its impracticality.

Tony Blankley: Now Sits Expectation In The Air| December 31, 2008 | Tony Blankley
As President-elect Obama vacations with his family in Hawaii and publicly complains about the intrusiveness of the press pool and the intense scrutiny of his Secret Service team, I suspect about now Obama may be recalling George Bernard Shaw's heartless observation that: "There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it."
This last week of December 2008 is a strange moment for the country. It must be positively bizarre for our president-elect. It seems as if all the problems of the world are lining up and just waiting for our new president to handle. For every American but one, we are merely waiting to see what Obama will do in three weeks. For that one -- Obama -- he, presumably, is puzzling over finding the right policies -- if there are any right policies. Probably there are only terrible and catastrophic policies to pick from.
There are media reports that he is smoking more than usual. Who could blame him? For many of the rest of us, we wake up at 2 in the morning worried about our family's or our business's finances. Obama has to worry about the nation's and the world's finances -- and wars and threats of yet more wars.
Americans continue to not shop (until recently the world, including citizen of the world Obama, condemned Americans for shopping to the tune of 25 percent of world consumption. Now the whole world is begging us to buy more stuff to keep the world from going broke.) How long will it be before President Obama repeats Bush's advice to Americans after September 11 to go shopping.
The economy continues its downward track. The bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler have been delayed a couple of months -- to give Obama time to be sworn in as president before the real unpleasantness begins (or the really big bucks are spent to delay the unpleasantness by a few more months).
As Pelosi and her colleagues get ready to spend about a trillion dollars to try and stimulate the economy, Obama is going to have to start saying no to his friends on the Hill. Left to their own devices, that $1 trillion will fall well short of the spending urges that get larger by the day. It must be tough to spend a trillion dollars you don't have -- and be called cheap.
But even as he must worry whether even a trillion dollars of stimulus can ameliorate the precipitous economic contraction, he must also worry about the real possibility of double digit inflation hitting our economy in six to 18 months -- as a result of all these trillions of freshly conjured-up dollars that will be flooding our currency supply.
Beyond the little matters of either deflation or hyper-inflation, Hamas broke its ceasefire with Israel, and Israel started defending herself again last week. Muslims worldwide and our many anti-semitic European friends are crying out for Israel to show "restraint."
Nobody cares what lame duck Bush says about this anymore, but the whole angry world awaits the first presidential utterance of Barack H. Obama on the matter of putting the Jews in their place. Will he speak for all the Jew haters in Europe and the Middle East -- or will he speak as every American president since Harry Truman has, and defend Israel's right to exist and militarily protect itself when its civilians are attacked by yet more fanatic, Islamist bombs and rockets?
Down the road a piece from Gaza, the Pakistani and Indian fanatics in the subcontinent are gearing up for another of their regular flirtations with nuclear annihilation. As I write, the Pakistanis and Indians are rushing troops up to their mutual border -- but, of course, hope to avoid war. Unless they have backed down by Jan. 20 at noon, stopping war while not antagonizing either of those needed allies will fall to Obama and his vastly experienced Secretary of State (who once rode foreign elephants with Chelsea -- so is superbly equipped to manage Hindu/Muslim fanaticism).
And, oh, by the way, the Chinese are talking of building their first aircraft carrier to compete with our blue water navy.
To add to the burdens of our young president elect, reports from around the world suggest that the instinct to protect local economies is growing, thus putting more pressure on free trade. While strong arguments can be made in individual trade cases, history is unambiguous about the result of increased protectionism during a period of world economic contraction.
Economically beggaring thy neighbor is a sure path to depression. Contrary to Obama's prior words and union allies's desires, he fails to champion world trade at the serious risk of repeating Herbert Hoover's catastrophic Smoot-Hawley protectionist mistake.
With history before Obama, I think of Shakespeare's young King Harry -- Henry V, the duties of fateful war falling on his inexperienced shoulders, the chorus early recites:
"For now sits Expectations in the air, and hides a sword from hilts unto the point With crowns imperial. Crowns and coronets, Promised to Harry and his followers."
Let us hope that the inexperienced Obama -- now with crowns and coronets and followers -- rises to his duty as young Harry did six centuries ago.
until recently the world, including citizen of the world Obama, condemned Americans for shopping to the tune of 25 percent of world consumption. Now the whole world is begging us to buy more stuff to keep the world from going broke.
Or as Mark Steyn puts it:
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/christmas-apart-world-2267866-lives-grown
"After all, everyone knows Americans consume too much. What was it that then Sen. Obama said on the subject? "We can't just keep driving our SUVs, eating whatever we want, keeping our homes at 72 degrees at all times regardless of whether we live in the tundra or the desert and keep consuming 25 percent of the world's resources with just 4 percent of the world's population, and expect the rest of the world to say, 'You just go ahead, we'll be fine.'"
And boy, we took the great man's words to heart. SUV sales have nose-dived, and 72 is no longer your home's thermostat setting but its current value expressed as a percentage of what you paid for it.
If I understand then Sen. Obama's logic, in a just world Americans would be 4 percent of the population and consume 4 percent of the world's resources. And in these past few months we've made an excellent start toward that blessed utopia: Americans are driving smaller cars, buying smaller homes, giving smaller Christmas presents. And yet, strangely, President-elect Barack Obama doesn't seem terribly happy about the Obamafication of the U.S. economy. He's proposing some 5.7 bazillion dollar "stimulus" package or whatever it is now to "stimulate" it back into its bad old ways."
