Indeed, the state has a political landscape closely resembling that of the old solidly Democratic South, especially in its southeastern corner, known as Little Dixie, where many Southerners settled after the Civil War. When conservatives of the Old South began abandoning the party decades ago, Oklahoma’s Democrats lagged behind the historical trend. Further, the state has relatively small black and Hispanic populations, and so the Democrats did not absorb as many new voters from those groups as in the states of the old Confederacy.
These days Oklahoma Democrats dread running for local office in presidential election years, for fear of being associated with liberal nominees at the top of the ticket.
“Being liberal in Oklahoma, with the exception of a few legislative districts, will not get you elected,” said State Representative Joe Dorman, a conservative Democrat.

I live in St. Louis, but half the week I spend in SouthEast Missouri - my Ozarks home. You can’t go wrong with either! Missouri is a very red state - our only problem is St. Louis, Kansas City, and Columbia!
I don’t know. Dave Leip does the coloring. I’d actually like to use those maps for a different purpose (to show what counties I’ve visited on trips), but I’m not sure how to do that.
I not so sure! He came in 3rd behind McCain and Huckabee in our primary. He wouldn’t win here in the primary and can guarantee you that not all the counties would go for Romney.
Would be willing to bet that most of the 2nd District would not vote for Romney. I was in the heart of the 2nd District during the primaries several times and they were anyone but Romney.
Romney stiffed the GOP Convention in 2007 at the last minute — like the night before. A lot of the Party rank and file don’t want anything to do with him for a host of reasons and his surrogates made people even madder in the State.
Wouldn’t say it was a given with Romney. You have to remember that Istook at the request of Romney and the Mormon Church took light rail and road and bridge money that was to come to Oklahoma and sent it to Salt Lake for the Winter Olympics. Lot of bad feelings still in the state about that and probably why Istook didn’t run for reelection when it came out and a reason he was soundly defeated.
Hi, do you mean that Ernest Istook lost the race for governor overwhelmingly in 2006 because he is Mormon (former Baptist)? Or were there other factors that I have forgotten? Would Romney have won OK in your opinion?
I retract what I said then. That indeed sounds like he shouldn’t have run. I had presumed he offered himself up to give the party a decent candidate, but that it turned out a worse screw-up than Largent in ‘02, who was expected to win (although personally I thought Largent was a total dolt, especially on the Elian Gonzalez affair where he demonstrated absolutely no knowledge of the rights of children and parents under the Cuban Constitution). I was concerned when I saw we lost all those other statewide offices in ‘06, including that of Brenda Reneau’s Labor Commissioner. I presume her loss was partly a result of what you cited (and the failure, too, to hold Mary Fallin’s Lt Governorship).
I presumed the temporary rodent gains under the dreadful Owens would merely be just that, as it was in the early ‘70s when the state swung away from the GOP for a little while only to come right back (well, all except for the Governorship which we didn’t have for virtually a quarter-century), but instead it keeps going further and further into moonbatland.
God Help OK if BHO ever says the Word “DRILL”...then he may get another .002% of the vote of people who don’t think he’s lying about Drilling.
If Alaska was a Foreign Country, like Canada, or Mexico, they would be as RICH as Oklahoma, drilling for $money$.

As a conservative living in California (and in the SF Bay Area, on top of that), this gives me hope. Which has been in short supply this week.
Oklahoma is a pretty bad state to live in, politics aside.
ANY Republican would win OK in a general election for President, but some Republicans would cause a depressed turnout. If Slick Willard had been on the ticket, it would’ve been a far greater loss and my state would’ve kept the rodents in power in the House (albeit via gerrymandering, which is terrible here). I’m trying to counsel the incoming majority to put redistricting on the schedule to keep them from grabbing back control in 2010 and shutting us out as they have for decades on end. Understand we won 1.1+ million to their 900k votes for the legislature and STILL only won by 1 seat. That’s got to be corrected... (Sorry for going off on a diff tangent there).
My concern is that Jindal has made some dumb mistakes that could’ve been avoided (the thing with the pay raises especially — it made him look bad). He’ll grow in office, but he’s got to avoid dumb stuff like that.
There’s gonna be enormous pressure brought by the national Dems on Mitch Landrieu (who received more votes than Jindal did last year statewide), who will have to either run against him or for NOLA Mayor, especially when, as you said, he’ll have to go practically straight from a reelection campaign right into the primaries, and Landrieu (or whichever Dem candidate) will accuse him of abandoning the state and his duties to go after the Presidency. The state may not like that...
I’m backing Palin now unless something occurs to change that. Jindal I can see as a running mate, but otherwise he’ll face that aforementioned problem if he tries to go for the Presidency.
Of course, the biggest problem in ‘12 will be stopping Slick Willard again. He absolutely needed McCain-Palin to lose, and worked hard through his surrogates to undermine them, and continues to do so against Palin. He needs to be publicly denounced once and for all NOW. This guy is a malignant cancer.
We lost Bob Beers. A giant in the state legislature. He’s the man who should be Governor now.

I may end up moving there sooner or later..
I hope a conservative steps forward soon and runs against McCain in 2010. He never seems to have local competition and he takes us and the state for granted as a result.
