"The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start."

My boys donate hundreds of hours every year to actually worthy causes, of their own free will. How come only Obama’s List of Worthy Causes Deemed Truly Worthy By the Chosen One would count for community service? Didn’t you watch the Nation Service Forum at Columbia, it was all about this....it’s a type of youth draft,,,and it will be implemented..the dems love it, it’s a Bill Ayers idea and he wrote about it. That 100 hrs is mandatory for college, and 50 hrs for youth...those jr high and high schools will lose federal funds if they don’t participate,,,it’s been discussed a lot of times.

It would be much better to teach American history and civics. The boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are where we did volunteer work when I was young.

But I get your point, I just don’t think forced community service is worthwhile. People should volunteer.

Teach civics, english and responsibilities of citizenship instead. Marksmanship would be nice.
