Schwarzenegger to propose state worker furloughs, eliminate paid holidays

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will propose one-day-a-month unpaid furloughs for state workers for the next 17 months, as well as rescinding two of the workers' 13 paid holidays, sources said this morning.

The governor is scheduled to unveil his proposals this morning for closing a budget deficit that could be as big as $11.2 billion for the fiscal year that started July 1 and another $13 billion in the next fiscal year.

A source, who asked not be named because they are not authorized to speak on the issue for their state agency, said the administration is estimating that by cutting one day a month from the state payroll and eliminating Columbus Day and Lincoln's Birthday as holidays, the state could save $100 million a month.

The irony is all the patting on the back last month on signing the late budget.

I think we are seeing why Arnold is going to go see Obama.

He is looking for a handout!

Holy Cow! 13 paid holidays? I work in the private sector, I get 9 and that’s 2 more than my previous job. No wonder the state is broke!

Large IT companies are doing this as well, asking workers to take certain amounts of time off unpaid.

Thirteen paid holidays? That needs to be knocked down to three.

Stop spending and take everyone making over $50K and give them a 10% pay cut and they would have enough money. That includes contractors also.

Starting January, my company has zero holidays (even Xmas)...you get twenty-five days of total leave a year. Use it for holidays, sick leave or just a vacation. Thats the deal. None of the employees are happy and most are talking about leaving.

Hey Ahnald I have an idea how to save the budget in Kalyfornia. Stop providing $billions in giveaways to people that are in the country illegally. Then impose a 65% tax rate on movie industry wages, a 25% sales tax in LA County and raise real estate taxes on homes in excess of 3,000 sq/ft. Let the liberal Hollywood types put their money where their mouths are and get patriotic.

That's an interesting way of doing things. I get 2 weeks vacation and 9 holidays - that makes 19 days but then there is the future where I can get up to 4 weeks. If there is nothing for employees to look forward to, I can see why they might want to jump ship. No incentive to stay long term.

So that's the 13th day? I was trying to figure, Martin Luther King day, Presidents Day...hmm, even with Cesar Chavez day that only makes 12! ;) Maybe they get President's day and Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday? I just can't imagine where all the days are coming from.

system in California can’t handle the border break down and function with public schools, prisons and public hospitals. its not a race thing, it is we can’t afford it. if we can’t afford our own who were born here or who are legal residents here, we are in trouble and California and Dell Computer are just the beginning. Charity begins at home with our own. California is only at the beginning of it. And start busting up IRAS and 401ks to pay for services to illegal aliens or new amensty grantees (yet again which didn’t stop it) will only cause unrest.

Furloughs would be a start.
But why furlough 1 day a month instead of just whacking 10% of the state workforce?

The state payroll needs more than a thinning.
