While they come from different political parties, one thing both of these guys have in common is that they are state-wide representatives of a marginally retarded group of voters.

I will never figure Pennsylvania out . . . and I actually like PA a lot.

My experience is that Pennsylvania is comprised of the following types of voters:

1. Professional malcontents in Philadelphia who are no different than their coutnerparts in any other big U.S. city;

2. Philadelphia suburbanites who have a perpetual self-esteem problem because they see their metro area as a declining version of the New York City or Washington, D.C. metro areas;

3. A lot of old people (I read somewhere that PA has the oldest median age of any state in the U.S. after Florida) who are still waiting for the steel mills to open again, and are content to rely on financial support from various levels of government until they do; and

4. A lot of socially conservative folks from rural areas who are still waiting for the steel mills to open again, and are content to rely on financial support from various levels of government until they do.

I've noticed that a lot of those socially-conservative rural PA voters work for school districts, federal/state/local government or PENNDOT (maintaining the state's extensive road network). Every election they get put to the test: your values or your livelihood.

“they are state-wide representatives of a marginally retarded group of voters.”

I tried to read this any number of ways, but maybe it’s my marginal retardation.

There is a whole area between Philly and Pittsburgh that is not rural, but more Harrisburg (capital area) suburbia. This includes the are where the marginally retarded Army War College is housed, in Carlisle. It includes the Naval Depot in Mechanicsburg, where I live. Corporate offices for companies such as Footlocker and Rite Aid are here.

I worked for the campaign, and not only did I work with two former Hillary supporters but also with some great people involved in the Carlisle Trucking Industry and with some awesome hardworking students from Messiah and Dickinson Colleges.

Looking at the electoral map, most of PA went red, except counties near Philly and then Allegheny and Centre County. So, where do the rest of us marginally retarded voters come in?
