Suddenly, it may be cool to be an American again

VIENNA, Austria -- She was a stranger, and she kissed me. Just for being an American.

It happened on the bus on my way to work Wednesday morning, a few hours after compatriots clamoring for change swept Barack Obama to his historic victory. I was on the phone, and the 20-something Austrian woman seated in front of me overheard me speaking English.

Without a word, she turned, pecked me on the cheek and stepped off at the next stop.

Nothing was said, but the message was clear: Today, we are all Americans.

For longtime U.S. expatriates like me - someone far more accustomed to being targeted over unpopular policies, for having my very Americanness publicly assailed - it feels like an extraordinary turnabout.

Like a long journey over a very bumpy road has abruptly come to an end.

And it's not just me.

An American colleague in Egypt says several people came up to her on the streets of Cairo and said: "America, hooray!" Others, including strangers, expressed congratulations with a smile and a hand over their hearts.

Another colleague, in Amman, says Jordanians stopped her on the street and that several women described how they wept with joy.

LOL, I’m not even an American anymore - - there’s no such thing. I just live here.

America - - as a concept - - was a grand experiment. I bet the founders would be astonished it lasted as long as it did. However, the place is now just a land mass populated by cretins and parasites who enthusiastically vote for politicians who promise them “free stuff” - - confiscated by force from their neighbors - - in exchange for their votes.

At this point my main worry is for those poor souls in the military who might soon find themselves on UN “peacekeeping” missions in Rwanda and Darfur, armed only with rubber bullets. I hope those soldiers and Marines can find a way to get themselves discharged, and quick.

Sure.

And if the New York Yankees hired Don Knotts as their new manager, then everyone would like the Yankees.

Yeah, the Euros loved us after 9-11, too. They’re always there for us after an American tragedy. Then, when the work starts...gonzo.

“Cool is VERY important.”

Cool trumps love of country. Cool trumps competence.

This is exactly how the leftist P'sOS think, including the marxist we just elected.

I've retired my flag for the duration.
There are some things that I just can't do. No matter what.

Its all better now, all that matters is how we feel about things. If we feel good about ourselves and strangers like us then everything must be OK, so it’s all better now.

That’s the level of conviction with which the anti-Bush campaign in the U.S. and world media has managed to achieve in its target audience. The difficulty is that it has raised expectations to a wildly unreasonable level. If anyone thinks the Iranians are going to stop their nuclear weapons program because the Great One is now President he needs his head examined. If anyone thinks the Russians will cease deployment of missiles in Europe or aggression against the Ukraine, well, it’s already too late for that. If anyone thinks the world just became safe they’d better consider just for whom it became safer. It isn’t a comforting thought.

Well there you go, he done solved all our problems in one day. We can now dance in the streets, even if there’s a few nuclear craters in the mid-east.

I spoke with a liberal that Ive been trying turn for years now, who proudly exclaimed that Obama will change the world. I asked my liberal friend what will happen when dirty bombs start going off in subways in NYC and nuclear weapons start getting disarmed when the rest of the planet is arming? Of course the answer I expected, “Look at what Obama had to deal with from Bush!”

Why is it that the Germans or the French or the Brits or even Canadians are so hip on the US electing a “minority” yet their government has never done such?

Really. Can anybody explain this? Or is it that Obama is a Marxist, and that is what they like.

I’m so happy that so-called Americans who hate their country enough to live outside it are getting loved up by foreigners because the neo-Marxist stealth Muslim from Kenya got himself elected President. It makes me go all fuzzy inside.

Personally, I think it has ALWAYS been cool to be an American.

I have never found it uncool to be an American, and that includes in France and Austria. Colleagues or acquaintances may not always agree with our government's policies, but they've never taken it out on me.

They only seem to love us when we die at the hands of foreign murderers or we shoot ourselves in the foot.

What ever... when I first trekked to Europe (U.K., France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria) in '97 our chartered coach didn't have any logos because the company was concerned for our safety and their company's assets.

Who was Prez then? That's right Billy C. His administration didn't do a damn thing to terrorists thugs around the world... said thugs would constantly hit America and its assets without concern for retaliation.

Don't be surprised that by '10 the thugs of the world will revert to hitting us and hitting us hard - because America will no longer have our backs... the new State Department and National Security Advisors will offer to just hug it out and negotiate with said thugs.

Europe? No thanks... I'll holiday here in the good ol' U.S.A. for the next 4 years.
