Radio host Rush Limbaugh, the loudest conservative voice in American politics , today blasted John McCain's presidential campaign as weak and said Barack Obama's election as president is an opportunity to purge the Republican Party of candidates who abandon conservative principles.
"McCain's whole campaign was a concession speech," said Limbaugh in his post-election analysis. "We've now demonstrated to everyone how to lose."
Limbaugh dismissed any notion that victories by Democrats in the White House and Congress meant a repudiation of right-leaning principles.
Limbaugh explained conservatism was not on the ballot.
"We haven't been on the ballot since 1994," he said, noting that if Republicans wanted to win elections, they should not put so-called "moderates" on the ballot.
"The conservative movement does not need to be rebuilt," he said. "We had some people abandon the conservative movement, and they need to be abandoned."
The broadcaster called last night's results "an opportunity for cleansing ... like we haven't seen in a long time."

[[ Weve now demonstrated to everyone how to lose.
That was genius. Sums up everything in a sentence. Frum, Parker, Brooks they wanted McCain. They got him. He lost. They had their chance. Purge. ]]
I’m going to go against the grain by saying that McCain probably did about as well as _any_ candidate we might have put up could have done this year against the Messiah.
Could Romney have done better?
Could Huckabee have done better?
Could Thompson have done better?
Could Duncan Hunter have done better?
Could Rudy have done better?
Dammit, who could have done “better”?
In some ways, I’m surprised McCain did as well as he ended up doing. He got about 46-47% of the popular vote, right? That’s TWICE AS HIGH as G.W. Bush’s popularity rating, and Mr. Bush WON two elections.
Yes, I realize McCain should have attacked more, used Jerimiah Wright, etc. But the only other two candidates who _might have_ been #1 attack dogs would have been Huckabee and Rudy, both who garnered a lot of disrespect in this forum.
Like the guys who lost the World Series to the Mets in 1969 (I watched it), this time, we were “playing against fate”.
Better luck next time.
If there IS a “next time”...

Same here. After this week, I'm taking a break from politics and from FR until at least when Obama is sworn in. Conservatives really need to just take a dump and go rent a movie or something and stop worrying.
Rush is right in that we need to find principled conservative leadership and it probably won't be coming out of DC.
He now also has a great show on Fox....
Limbaugh's part of the problem and just as I predicted, he will never own up to his blame in this.
After doing all he could to destroy and hinder the McCain campaign once he won the nomination... despite the obvious facts about what the snob represented for our country's future.
If the truth about Obama and the stakes in this election weren't absolutely clear to Limbaugh back then, he is an idiot.
If the truth was clear to Limbaugh, but he still took it upon himself to damage the McCain campaign as much as possible, then he's no friend to conservatism, he's no conservative, and no friend to America.
Either way, he needs to be discarded.
“I liked it when WE offered genuine HOPE.”
Well isn’t that what the other side had on their signs, along with “change”?
Heck we should have just printed up some signs of _our own_ with “hope” and “change” on them, eh? :)

This is why the candidate should be a normal American. Someone who has a stake in the outcome of the election. McCain can go back to his seven houses. No Section 8 is going to destabilize his neighborhood. At times he acted as if it didn't really matter whether he won, assuring voters they had nothing to fear from Obama - an "honorable man" who would serve well as president. What???
But was the whole election an arranged fraternity prank?
Powder..patch..ball FIRE!
Only about a third of colonists wanted freedom from England. That turned out ok for a little over 200 years....
“In a 2000 debate when Alan Keyes was asked how he thought “W” would do if elected, Keyes said he’s a nice fellow but he doesn’t have the skills to communicate conservative priciples. “
And Mr. Keyes _did_ have them, I presume?
In that case, how did he manage to do so well running directly as the Republican candidate vis-a-vis Obama in Obama’s Senate race?

“It was a spiritual battle for sometime, and both side has its victories and defeats. But weve been down this path of defeat for sometime now, yesterday was just Appomattox”
Your war is right but your point _in_ that war is off.
For Republicans and conservatives, yesterday was Gettysburg.
- John
The only way to fix this is to end open primaries. Too many dems crossed over in initial voting so conservatives were taken out and we were left with mccain.
Yes, but those rules are set by the states individually. Either you have to successfully sue to force them to close the primaries, or you have to change the rules of the Republican Party so that states with open primaries get exactly one delegate apiece. That would be legit; parties consider whether they won a state in how many delegates that state is assigned. I think that is the approach to take, and one which would force the states to close their primaries.
“Despite Republican expectations that Landrieu would be vulnerable, the incumbent capitalized on voter enthusiasm for Democrat Barack Obama and also picked up backing from moderate voters who supported Republican John McCain.”
members of the moderate voter continuuuuuuummmm??
How would you propose to attact them to our side?
My point on Keyes was 2-fold:
1) Certainly you will admit that, as Keyes pointed out, W was a bad communicator and that is a critical qualification for a successful Presidency if you are a conservative.
2) Re the Illinois Senate race, what other carbetbagging conservative could have come into Illinois and beat a machine candidate who had the political talent to become President after only 4 years in a major office?
Yes, you’re make a good point. Although this feels later in the timeline than Gettysburg, but probably earlier than outright surrender.
Maybe a better comparison would be the battle of the bulge.
A little test...are you a moderate conservative or an extreme conservative? If you are a Dem, are you a commie or a commie?
The people who need to be purged are the far right wackos. They have destroyed the Party’s image in the minds’ of the American voters and given us an Obamanation.
Interesting, didn’t McCain lose in your state?
In our Repub county all of our winners were Republican and the votes for President went to BO!
