While John McCain's campaign has tried to tie its Democratic rival to socialism, one of the Arizona Republican's top surrogates said Barack Obama is not a socialist.
McCain's campaign had seized on Sen. Obamas statements that he plans to spread the wealth around and sought to tie the Illinois Democrat to socialism.
But former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), while arguing that Obamas economic plan is a job-killer, said Monday on CBSs Early Show: You know, I dont think Barack Obamas a socialist. I think a lot of his policies are inspired by the pathway [that] Europe took. I think the idea of having the government take over healthcare and raise taxes on employers is the wrong direction for the country.
Romney, who was the GOP surrogate tasked with appearing on all of the morning talk shows, also said both candidates are terrific men, when asked if the country would be in good hands if the Democrat is elected.
Ill be very concerned about the economy for the country. Ill be concerned that the economy will be in a slow-down or a recession for a longer, deeper period, Romney stated. I'll be concerned about long term, about a president who would raise taxes on businesses and, if you will, through this intimidation, impose unions on small businesses.
Thanks for nothing, Mitt...
Size 11 shoe in mouth. Gee GOP - let’s all help Obama win.
Last week, I was all over Romney and his junkies. He really does want McCain to lose:

Thanks for reaffirming why I thought this guy was a loser back in the primaries........
Romney is pulling a Hillary.
One socialist to another.
Yaaaay! Go Moderates! [/s] Romney is a disappointment; he’ll
settle for mediocrity and a re-branded GOP. That sucks ostrich eggs.
WHEN WILL THESE GIRLY MEN NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY IT?!
our party needs to learn how to stay on message. The dems were able to stick with the ‘Pontious Pilate was a community organizer’ bit, but we can’t stick with this true statement.
Uh, Mitt.... the pathway Europe took was toward socialism! Hello!
First Romney staffers betraying Sarah, releasing her wardrobe costs and saying she’s “going rogue”. Not to mention his horrid Convention speech. Now this. I think it’s safe to say Romney has no future in GOP politics.
Perhaps the GOP is actively campaigning for Big-O so they can take a 4 year break to get their act together. Looks like they could use it.
Suddenly, I don’t feel sorry Romney didn’t get the nomination. And, as Noonan, Parker, Will, et al. believe, he would have been a much better vice-presidential choice than Palin. (sarcasm)
Same question I have for all socialists who deny that they are socialists:
If he/you were a socialist, how would his/your ideology be different than it is?
I’ve got a feeling that Romney is about as bitter about his primary loss to McCain as McCain was over his 2000 primary loss to Bush.
Romney, the “conservative”
The mostest loyalest Republican...
Working his butt off for McCain...
