(Los Angeles) Barak Obama and John McCain should take note of a Zogby poll released today that found that 8.1 percent of American adults have read the book Atlas Shrugged by pro-freedom philosopher Ayn Rand. This result matches the 8.1 percent result from the 2007 Atlas Shrugged survey. This poll illuminates a large segment of the American public that favors minimum government.
Atlas Shrugged chronicles an America where government has taken control of nearly all aspects of life. As society collapses the heroine follows a trail of clues surrounding the disappearance of innovators and the rise of a mysterious phrase "Who is John Galt?" A 1991 poll by the Library of Congress and The Book of the Month Club found that Atlas Shrugged was the second most influential book after the Bible.
The poll of 1,338 adults was conducted by Zogby International in October 2008 at the request of Freestar Media, LLC. The margin of error of the poll is +/- 2.7 percentage points. Atlas Shrugged is one of those meaty tomes that might intimidate the casual novel reader by its shear bulk, but turns out to be a highly pleasurable read due to Ayn Rand’s extraordinary writing skill and insight. Once you pick it up, it’s hard to put down.
I made my kids read it - with both carrot and stick. They learned from it also - actually my kids are more conservative than I am. Anyway, an abridged version would not be amiss, my short-attention span son complained of that some.

Fantastic News! The brand new Fox News/Rasmussen battleground poll shows Sen. John McCain has surged ahead to tie or lead in key battleground states where Sen. Obama had held a lead just a few days ago.
The undecided voters are breaking for McCain and the McCain/Palin campaign clearly has the momentum to win this race!!
McCain now leads Florida (50%-49%) and North Carolina (50%-49%) is tied with Obama in Missouri (49%-49%( and Ohio (49%-49%). And in two other states McCain is within the statistical margin of error to be tied with Obama: Colorado (51%-47%) and Virginia (51%-47%).
D'Anconia's speech is the brillant heart of the book and should be read by everyone, but the other 900+ pages are rendered superfluous by it.

Completely disagree on her writing skill. She could have chopped 300 pages on that tree killing book and still made her excellent points with all of her insights.

That's also why it was a terrible movie.
She needs an editor, a 100 page speech by John Galt, hell the 10 pages of Roark's speech at his second trial was bad enough. To describe her writing as 'turgid' is giving her credit. "We the Living" is the best written book she's done where I suspect she had an editor.
I loved how in South Park, when officer Barbrady learned to read he thought it was great, until someone gave him a copy of "Atlas Shrugged" then it sucked *ss and swore to never read again.
My favorite book of all time. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, lately I’ve been having a nagging feeling like I need to read it again. Wonder why?

I agree. Also, a writer should learn how to “lecture” without lecturing.
Another great flaw was timing. Atlas is essentially a book about the 30’s that was published in the mid-50’s. If it had come out during FDR’s “reign”, when many in the US looked favorably on the planned economies of the USSR and facist Germany, it would have had a greater punch than during the postwar period.
I listened to “Atlas Shrugged” on Audible Books; 57 hours and worth every minute and every word. “Fountain Head” was shorter but still worthy of the listening time.
Both should be mandatory, but the NEA would riot and go out on strike.
What is bothersome is just how prophetic Ayn Rand was, and how the Marxists just eliminated her ideas being taught.
