DeMint rips spending; Senator says bailout could haunt McCain
The Post and Courier, Charleston, SC ^ | 2008-11-01 | Robert Behre

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint said he expects American voters will give the Republican Party "an intervention" Tuesday, but he has high hopes that the party will go into rehab to rediscover its conservative values.

DeMint, R-S.C., spoke to about 40 Republican supporters during a luncheon meeting in North Charleston on Friday, and he seemed at one point to write off the chances of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

The only South Carolina member of Congress to oppose the recent federal bailout package, DeMint said McCain was "kumbaya-ing" with President Bush, adding, "I think he lost the election in how he dealt with that."

DeMint later clarified his comments, saying that he thinks McCain still has a shot at winning, adding, "If McCain loses the election, he will have lost it because of the bailout."

His overall message was that the Washington leadership, Democratic and Republican, has failed because of excessive spending, earmarking and expanding federal control over health care and schools.

"Frankly, since Ronald Reagan we have not had a national spokesperson that can lay it all out for the American people," he said.

“Are you referring to me or to Sen. DeMint? Cause, if the later, you need to check your meds: DeMint is an actual, proven conservative.”

DeMint is a conservative. But if this is quoted correctly he is also stupid! You never say this kind of stuff before an election as important as this. There will be a time for talking about mistakes, and now is not the time!It is no secret that McCain was not the favorite candidate of most of us. But the alternative is so bad that he MUST all get behind McCain/Palin.

Is McCain everything I want? Obviously not. But now is not the time to demand ideological purity on 100% of the issues! We have at least a moderately conservative candidate in McCain and a true conservative in Sarah. If McCain wins it sets the table for Sarah to rise to true greatness. Come on DeMint, and all you guys who either will not vote, or are voting some “super pure” third party guy, it's too important to let Obama win without all our best efforts!

I was referring to Sen. Dim... er Demint. His comments here are nothing sort of treason to the GOP coming as they are just before the election. If this is the type of people your ilk want to take over the party, then John McCain can’t win soon enough for me.

Typical slime coming from an anti-Republican. Graham is loyal to his party and his president unlike backstabbing WINOs like DimWit.

Dude, I put principle over party.

Graham is loyal to his party and his president unlike backstabbing WINOs like DimWit.

The only party Graham is loyal to is the RINO Party.

You forget that Freepers are by and large conservatives and not GOP hacks.

Lindseed is such a creepy little liberal weasel. I always wondered how long it would be before he was caught tapdancing in a South Carolina public toilet.

Here’s a tip for you, buddy: Graham, McCain, and Bush are real Republicans; you, DeMint, and nutters like Paul are the RINOs.

Look, robert david says that conservatives are RINOs. Lol!

The unfortunate thing is that if you remove all the small-government conservatives like DeMint, Paul, and others, all the GOP has left is a bunch of

like McCain, Bush, Graham, and company.

For such a Noob, you do have a mouth on you. Are you SURE you belong here? This once was a civil AND CONSERVATIVE place, where disagreement was discussed and name-calling was of such rarity as to call for IMMEDIATE censure and a time out or banning. But then, from your post you are NOBODY’S conservative and a tasteless jackass, as well.

Conservatives want to see our Constitution restored to its rightful place and the Republic set free of the influences of big government. I have no idea what YOU want except socialism-lite or worse. Get over yourself.

Don’t mind the loon. He’s a troll that came in some months ago to justify and defend the illegal invasion. He’s neither a Republican nor a Conservative.

It was a post from Jim DeMint. He said you're a liar.

So you’re telling me that United States Senator Jim DeMint posted on Free Republic, and the mods removed that post? I don’t believe you.

Since it was Senator DeMint’s post which was pulled it is not I who is a simple-minded troll.
