They are well-worn phrases, repeated ad nauseam throughout the English language.
But local councils have now waged war on Latin words, banning staff from using them in writing or in speech.
The authorities claim the terms are elitist and discriminatory and have ordered employees to use wordier alternatives in documents or when speaking to members of the public.
However the ban has infuriated classical scholars who say it is diluting the world's richest language and is the 'linguistic equivalent of ethnic cleansing'.
Bournemouth Council, which has the Latin motto Pulchritudo et Salubritas - beauty and health - has listed 19 terms it no longer considers acceptable for use.
This includes bona fide, eg (exempli gratia), prima facie, ad lib or ad libitum, etc or et cetera, ie or id est, inter alia, NB or nota bene, per, per se, pro rata, quid pro quo, vis-a-vis, vice versa and even via.
Its list of more verbose alternatives, includes 'for this special purpose', in place of ad hoc and 'existing condition' or 'state of things', instead of status quo.
In instructions to staff, the council said: 'Not everyone knows Latin. Many readers do not have English as their first language so using Latin can be particularly difficult.'
Some Latin words are seemingly not so difficult and have escaped unscathed - PS (post scriptum - after writing or postscript), am (ante meridiem - before noon) and pm ( post meridiem - after noon).

England? Where’s that? It’s still in existence?
Gonna’ have to rewrite hundreds of years of legal and medical material I imagine.
As a Latin teacher, I am appalled! What ignorance!
Why not teach these phrases to the new comers? If you move to a new place, should you not learn new things?
Englandistan. Fools. The Romans built most of their infrastructure. We saved them for the Nazi in WW2 just so they could surrender to Islam and political correctness.
Next they’ll have to ban all English words with more than six letters or more than two syllables.
If we had only implemented the Decibet like Dan Ackroyd told us years ago we wouldn't have this problem.
Wouldn’t want to confuse those immigrants, would we?
Not just ignorant but BARBARIC. Do these people bathe?
Yeah ... had to read a lot of world history and WWII history in homeschool .... I remember one remark an American volunteer said ... he was a flight officer flying Hurricanes ... the Queen was reviewing the flight officers and she stopped at this American and asked him why he volunteered to come to England to fly against the Germans. He answered “Because there always has to be England” ... pity his service was wasted as was so many of those fine brave men and women .....
Id cogitare dubito
I did horribly in my HS Latin classes, but I have always believed that Latin is used because it is a dead language and therefore the meanings of the words and/or prases would never change.
So,,, i can’t possibly know a LATIN phrase,,, unless,, I speak ENGLISH really well? Im a simple man,, am i reading this correctly?
If im reading this wrong,,,,Mea Culpa
Heart breaking but true. The English threw away 1000 years of civilization for political correctness. The same leftist who let Muslims flood into the UK are behind Obama. Aka Muslim Brotherhood funded by the Saudis.
Part of my family left England 200 + years ago and thank God. Sadly I no longer have any faith they will defend their civilization - it is pretty much over. English people are generally too nice and can be manipulated easily.
The other part of my family left Italy at least 150 years ago. I have more faith that the Germans, Austrians and Italians may defend western civilization. The Germans and Austrians did it in 1683 AD at Vienna with the help of the wonderful Poles and King Jan Sobeiski.
You said it... and on Tuesday we should know if we are 'DUMB YET'. I hope we can tell Obama to STICK it on Tuesday - but I'm not sure if we are smart enough to keep him & the marxists out of GOVERNMENT!!
