Priests Say it in Plain English: "Catholics Cannot Vote for Obama"
lifesitenews ^

Posted on 11/02/2008 8:21:14 AM PST by flyfree

October 31, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The priests of CallforherSOS.org have delivered what may be the most blunt directive yet to Catholic voters in the upcoming presidential election.

In three short videos, Fr. Tom Celso and Fr. Don Eder embellish little upon a simple, strict manifesto of Catholic moral teaching.

"It is the mission of the Catholic Church to pass moral judgements in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man require it," say the priests.

"The Democratic party and Barack Obama have brought shame and horror to this nation.  Mr. Obama has promised to legalize partial-birth abortion, the savage murder of babies during birth. We are outraged.

"Catholics must uphold human rights, avoid sin, and cannot vote for abortion candidates. They cannot vote for Obama."

The videos were created by by the Catholic coalition CALL FOR HER - SOS, i.e. "Catholics Activated Leading Laity For Openly Recognizing Human Elementary Rights - Salvation Of Souls."

The website explains the coalition's mission to "activate Catholics and other Christians, especially laity, to lead other persons to recognize ... the most basic human rights and the importance of saving souls in the context of the current election."

The only other known Catholic leader to openly condemn voting for Obama by name is retired Texas Bishop Rene Gracida.  In a letter to Catholic World News, the Bishop explained why most Bishops will not endorse candidates by name. "In the United States the danger of losing the tax-exempt status of the Church may perhaps be seen as justification for caution on the part of Ordinaries (Bishops in charge of particular dioceses))," said Gracida

The bishop added however, "It would be wrong for an Ordinary to jeopardize the tax exempt status of his Diocese for any reason short of the most important, the defense of innocent human life. Therefore, I do believe that abortion is a great enough threat to our society to justify an Ordinary taking a strong stand against the candidacy of such a pro-abortion candidate as Barack Hussein Obama.  An Ordinary need not name the candidate by name, as I have done, but surely the Ordinary possesses the literary skills to condemn the candidacy on moral grounds in such a way as to leave absolutely no doubt in the reader's mind as to the identity of the candidate whose candidacy is being condemned."

Pro-Obama Catholics plan ‘stop the vote’ at parishes

Chris Korzen / Fr. Frank PavoneDenver, Oct 31, 2008 / 06:26 pm (CNA).- Priests for Life is warning that James Salt and Chris Korzen from the pro-Obama organization Catholics United sent a blast email on Thursday offering instructions on how to prevent pro-life Catholics from distributing electoral guides near Catholic parishes around the country. Fr. Frank Pavone, director of Priests for Life, has also pointed out that the Catholics United plan could have negative legal consequences.

In a message sent from the email address parishprotection@catholics-united.org under the subject “Help Protect Catholic Churches from Political Manipulation,” James Salt and Chris Korzen say that with less than a week to go until Election Day, things are getting ugly. “In a final act of desperation, the religious far right is calling on its activists to defy the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ order to keep unapproved election materials from church property by doing a ‘literature drop’ at parishes across the country. The goal of this activity is to convince Catholics that it’s immoral to vote for candidates who don’t subscribe to the right’s narrow agenda.”

The email goes on to warn that last Monday, “the partisan group Priests for Life held a teleseminar to train some 3,300 activists nationwide on how to place divisive political literature on the windshield of every churchgoing Catholic’s car this Saturday and Sunday.”

Salt and Korsen then announce that Catholics United is “spearheading an effort to put the brakes on the religious right’s plans in as many parishes as possible,” and is asking followers to “call your pastor and encourage him to instruct the ushers to monitor the church parking lot during the worship service.”

They also promise to provide “detailed information on how you can protect churches in your neighborhood.”

“The extreme right will stop at nothing to distort church teaching for political gain. It’s time to say that enough is enough. Catholics are tired of our faith being used as a political weapon,” concludes the email of the pro-Obama organization.

On Friday, Fr. Frank Pavone, President of Priests for Life, emailed James Salt and Chris Korzen. “I don’t know if you attempted to speak with me before sending this out, but we would welcome such an approach in the future,” Fr. Pavone wrote.

“Please inform those to whom you communicate that they might also want to alert their pastors that a large number of people are ready to file lawsuits against any individual or institution who tries to intimidate or prevent citizens from fostering the electoral process or informing their fellow citizens about the candidates,” the priest warned.

Fr. Pavone explained that while “Priests for Life” is not initiating any such activity, “many people have told us they are ready to do so depending on what happens this weekend.”

“Pastors and dioceses –he added- want to avoid ‘legal entanglements,’ and the activity you recommend here will get them entangled far faster than mine will.”

“Obviously, an email like the one you sent below would implicate you in such entanglements as well,” Fr. Pavone said in reference to the group’s email.

Finally, Fr. Pavone thanked Korzen and Salt for the extra publicity, and asked them to “be sure to register for the November 5 teleseminar as well.”

Speaking to CNA, Fr. Pavone said that he devoted a significant part of the homily he preached this Friday on EWTN to urge Catholics to get out and distribute literature in the parking lots of parishes. “I encouraged them to do so especially this weekend, which obviously will be decisive for the outcome of the elections,” he told CNA.

CNA attempted to get reaction from Chris Korzen but was unable to before press time.

Maybe it’s time for churches to stop worrying about their tax ststus and start thinking about their commitment to The Word Of God.

I got a recorded phone message from Fr. Frank Pavone, the head of “Priests for Life”, emphasizing that Catholics must not vote for a pro-choice candidate.

I’m assuming most Catholics registered with a parish are getting this. I hope so!

I heard a preacher this morning say “What if a muslim leads this country?” He admitted he was getting real close to the IRS exemption rules.

I tell you these men of God KNOW who and what obama is and they’re trying to do their jobs. If only America would listen.

If he wins and they go after the churches we had better all stand up with them and do whatever we have to do.

The next thing the Catholic Church should do is notify the Church will soon be excommunicating Pelosi, Kennedy, Biden, et al. I guarantee if obama wins the church is going to be in danger. At this point it’s all about survival.

Biden and Kennedy think they are Catholic. Unfortunately, there are going to be millions of Protestants voting for Obama also.

Unfortunately, as the leaders of the Catholic Church announce Judgment from God on their parishioners if the US votes in a totally pro-abort crowd, we will ALL be under God’s judgment if “that one” gets in.

God bless them! In my parish, the homilies for two weeks focused on Prop. 8 and voting pro-life when there is a viable pro-life candidate. They also passed out a nice booklet called “Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics” put out by Catholic Answers Action. It listed the five non-negotiable issues a Catholic must consider when voting: abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and homosexual “marriage.”

It also told us how NOT to vote:
1) “Do not just vote based on your political party affiliation, your earlier voting habits, or your family’s voting tradition. Years ago, these may have been trustworthy ways to determine who to vote for, but today they are often not reliable.”

3) “Do not vote for candidates just because they declare themselves Catholic. Unfortunately, many self-described Catholic candidates reject basic Catholic teaching.”

I am proud that the Catholic Church is speaking out.

Given the demographics of my local catholic church I think they ought to say it in plain Spanish too.

Amen and Amen, Farmer Dean. I do not agree with folks who want to use God’s name and authority in a near-blasphemous manner on all sorts of issues. But, in this clear “life and death” case, it’s completely appropriate.

Holy Souls, on this your feast day, while we pray for you, also pray for us!

And thank you, God, for all the priests who are speaking out! I suffer and pray for them, that they continue [hastily] and in abundance.

I’m really disgusted with our parish priest and with our Cardinal DiNardo. All I’ve heard is, “Check the USCCB website.” Ugh. Total failure of responsibility.

Bishop Gracida did say it in plain Spanish (and English). IN fact, he said that Catholics cannot vote for Barack HUSSEIN Obama!

A Prayer for our Nation as we Prepare to Elect our Leaders

For nine days, from October 27 to Election Day (November 4), Priests for Life calls upon believers to participate in the “Election Novena” by saying the following prayer each day:

O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord,
Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.

We thank you for the privilege
Of being able to organize ourselves politically
And of knowing that political loyalty
Does not have to mean disloyalty to you.

We thank you for your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.

We thank you for the opportunity that this election year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.

Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to you requires that they be politically active.

Awaken your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.

Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.

Awaken your people to a commitment to justice
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin,
And not one moment later.

Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of your kingdom.

May that make us all the more committed
To being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
