On Thursdays Countdown show on MSNBC, New York Times columnist Frank Rich charged that it looks "morally bad" and "idiotic" that Republicans have not elected a black candidate to federal office in six years. The Republican party also seemed to remind Rich of South Africas racist Apartheid policy of the past: "The fact is, this isn`t South Africa 25 years ago, this is a major political party that is essentially all white. And the hierarchy of it is definitely white. There hasn`t been a new black Republican elected to federal office, I think, in six years. And so, what does that tell us about the party? And how does that look to voters? I think it looks like it`s the party of the last century. It looks bad. Not only is it morally bad, but politically. I think it`s idiotic because it`s against the whole demographics of this country and where theyre going."
But Rich ignored the fact that Republicans have routinely tried to elect black candidates to federal and other high offices, only to have them defeated by Democrats in the general election in most cases. Former Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele represented the GOP as he vied for the Senate in 2006, only to be defeated by Democratic candidate Benjamin Cardin in the overwhelmingly Democratic state of Maryland. In the Ohio Governors race in 2006, former Secretary of State Ken Blackwell represented the Republican party but was defeated by Democrat Ted Strickland. And Lynn Swann lost in his bid to unseat Pennsylvanias Democratic Governor Ed Rendell in 2006. Also, according to the Associated Press, black Republicans represented their party in eight congressional districts the same year, but all were unsuccessful.

I dropped a Frank Rich in a porcelain bowl a little while ago.
And if Obama loses, the Democrats will have refused to elect a half-black man.
Racists.
Deborah Honeycutt (black Republican) is running for Congress from my district this year. I hope she beats David Scott, who is also black.
That's a fact. And Frank Rich needs to give himself a reach around.
Sounds lkike this idot is inciting a race war.
who cares what people look like.
Gotta love it when a white boy can’t control himself and just has to play the race card. Kiss it Frankie!
Frank Rick is a self-loathing scumbag!
Content of Character - not color of skin, Mr. Rich.
Rich is taking the US back 150 years. This guy would have owned and bought and sold slaves
Rich is a former Broadway reviewer who got his current political byline by being Pinch’s boyfriend.
Fact.
I caught an interview with Deborah Honeycutt on Steve Marlzberg’s NY WOR talk radio show earlier this week. I hope she wins - she sounds terrific!
Ahhh liberal elitist jew journalists stirring up hate and division - what an idiot. Every black who dares run as a conservative is called every name in the book by the liberal elitists and blacks. Nothing new here - just trying to stir up race hatred - dont let affect you just understand why they do it to keep their power.
Maybe they’ll only be “half racists”? Frankly, I think all this misplaced emphasis on race - all of it seeming to come from the left - is going to cause plenty of trouble next week.
Like it or not, the Republican Party is an “ideas-based” party and not a coalition of identity politics groups based on ethnicity, sexuality and race.
Not to mention that many minorities view the government as their sugar daddy.
So, to recap, the Republican Party is idea-centered and not racial politics-centered.
Could someone who regularly comments on TV make this announcement, please! Fawning to minorities who want government goodies for free will not help us, those people already have a strong democratic party.
Where was the outrage when laws were broken to cut down Michael Steele?
And I have to throw in a quick rant about the mysogyny - since when is it just fine and dandy to have a bound woman hanging, in a depiction of personal hatred and cruelty, like they did to Palin?
Sheesh.
Frank Rich is probably hung like a butterfly...hence his fascination with race. What a fool!
Frank Rich ought to take a dump in a hat and pull it over his ears.
The fact that the GOP hasn't elected a black to Federal Office in several years says more about democrats than it does Republicans.
