Dang, just left the VA too. Will be there.
Two threads up the list is the rally for Dems for McCain, also at Foley Square tomorrow at 11am.
I may just have to go there.
I posted this at their site.
There are two perspectives on military service motivating this campaign, which give an insight to policy in general. Barack Obama carries a letter from a grieving mother asking that no other mother encounter her suffering. John McCain carries a letter saying fight these wars to victory, so her sons death retains meaning.
Both women must rebuild lives with battered souls, broken hearts, and hollow bodies full of tears. Christmas and Thanksgiving will never be the same, and birthdays approach with dread. They stumble through a black, forbidding forest with barely discernable paths, but here their directions diverge.
In Obamas letter the mother states how her sons death affected her. Her plight calls forth pleas to bring the troops home, and return everyone to comfortable serenity. Her thoughts provide the background for cultivating, perpetuating her misery as an aberrant diversion of a gullible, pathetic boy into dying for oil and Middle East imperialism.
In John McCains letter, the mother focuses on her son and his extraordinary decision. His turning away from self to value intangibles of freedom, honor, and duty hardly compares with education and training considerations. He volunteered to serve, accepting the warrior calling as privilege, and measured support by others recognition of his courage and professionalism. For him there was no finer calling than ridding the world of tyrants, dictators and murdering agents of chaos, as was done in Afghanistan and Iraq. This mother sees compromising short of victory as degrading her son.
By extension this election pits policies enabling self-proclaimed wretchedness against those promoting selfless initiative.
