A split has developed in the U.S. Catholic Church over abortion, with some bishops taking a harder line while some Catholics argue for a soft approach. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York, the leading Catholic prelate, declared abortion "no less heinous than what was perpetrated by Hitler and Stalin," the Boston Globe reported. The newspaper column was illustrated with a picture of a 20-week fetus.
Bishops in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, have warned Catholics against voting for any politician who supports abortion rights.
Others say the anti-abortion movement has failed to overturn the landmark Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court ruling or to win a legislative ban on abortion.
They say trying to reduce abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies convincing women not to end their pregnancies would be more effective.
Nicholas Cafardi, a professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, said he still finds abortion evil but believes the fight has been lost "permanently."
Mark Silk of Trinity College in Washington calls the argument "an emerging civil war within the upper reaches of American Catholicism."
Polls show a majority of Catholic voters plan to vote for the Democratic presidential ticket of Barack Obama and Joseph Biden. Both are pro-choice -- and Biden is a Catholic.

Cafardi, Doug Kmiec and the rest of this band of Heretics for Obama keep making this fallacious argument with a straight face. Obama himself emphasized the importance of SC appointments, saying in the third debate that "Roe versus Wade probably hangs in the balance".
These so called Catholics want to give up the fight at the height of the battle with victory still within reach.
Why would permission for murder be considered the “soft” approach?
It makes me sick to my stomach when I walk through our church parking lot going into mass on Sunday. So many cars with Obama stickers on them. On right to life Sunday a few weeks ago our priest strongly hinted to choose candidates who were in agreement with ALL church doctrines. He railed against cafeteria Catholics, those who pick and choose what they believe in. It’s very confusing to me why Hispanics would vote Obama. They are way more in tune with basic Catholic beliefs than most white Catholics.
Look at this:
Roman Catholics for Obama/Biden 08
I am not encouraged by the "guidance" released by the church. I remember going to Mass and being bombarded by leftist propaganda during the homily by Priests. The term "Social Justice" was tossed around a lot more than Christ by these guys during their political speeches.
About 14 years ago, I remember there was one good Priest at a church here in NJ - and he was very devout and Conservative - but he was the exception. The other priests he was serving were very, very liberal. I remember one dancing down the aisle on Palm Sunday dressed up in some loud, outrageous outfit. I later learned he died of AIDS.
This is about the refusal of most “Catholics” to obediently attempt to from their consciences in favor of Church teachings. Some things are debatable, but abortion has been declared intrinsically evil since the Apostles composed the Didache.
It boils down to listening to “the world” or listening “to God”. Man or mammon. The wide road to hell, or....
No one who believes in God should be voting Obama. We've been brainwashed folks. God was very clear, "though shall not kill", the enemy tells us that the end justifies the means. May God have mercy on us.
This is not new. Many Catholics are cradle Democrats who can do nothing else. I have relatives that are part of the Democratic machine in southwestern Pennsylvania. They simply turn a blind eye to the abortion issue. The best I could do was to tell my late mother simply not to vote for the presidential candidate if he supported abortion, but to vote for everything else on the ballet.
Many blue collar Democrats are simply unable to vote for a Republican because they have been brainwashed since birth. They have not seen the gradual evolution of Democrats to socialists, Marxists, and communists. They just know that Murtha is good because he brings pork into their District. Sad, but true. Having lectured for years on the evils of abortion I do not know what it would take to awaken many people of southwestern Pennsylvania from their greed and idolatry.

You either follow the dictates of the WORD or you do not. There is no middle ground, no softening of the WORD.
You vote for a baby murderer and you have voted against your claimed faith.
What polls show a majority of Catholics voting for Obama?
Not that clear :0) It's "thou shalt not commit murder". "Kill" is a common mistranslation.
I think that there probably will be a split in the Catholic Church here, sooner rather than later.
If Barack the Insane wins, he is going to use every resource of the US government to go after people and institutions that opposed him, and I’m sure he has a little list with the names of all the bishops who have spoken out against him and all the Church organizations (such as the Knights of Columbus) who have worked for the pro-life cause in this election.
On the other hand, there are some - probably even the majority - of the bishops and institutions that are obviously complete tools of the Dem party and really, no matter what they are occasionally forced to say, aren’t opposed to abortion at all and don’t adhere to Church teaching in any way. Lax discipline over the last 40 years has permitted them to keep their positions. Most of them, also, avoid overt conflict with Rome.
However, once persecution of the part of the Church that is loyal to Rome begins, you’re going to see the emergence of a “patriotic church” or an Anglican-style church, where one part of the Church decides to abandon Rome and adhere to their secular government as their supreme authority. I have no doubt that, as in the case of the Anglicans, this group will get the property, the money, and possibly even the right to the name, although they might have to call themselves the American Catholic Church or some such thing. Just as in England many years ago, some people will remain faithful to Rome and hence to the teachings of Christ, no matter how severely persecuted. But they will no longer be part of the existing structure, and will probably have to be celebrating their masses in somebody’s garage before long.
If Barack the Insane loses, I think we will have a new lease on life and then it will be up to the orthodox bishops and Rome to make every effort to properly educate Catholics - or tell them to leave if they don’t accept the teachings of the Church. The problem is that the disobedient and faithless have been allowed to get away with it for so long that I’m not sure what it would take to restore the Church at this point.
I think you’re right about the coming split.
Over the last two years I have been noticing stronger and less subtle sermons regarding the preservation of life, and the political arena during Mass. We have also been blessed with a growing number of adult Catechumin candidates!
I agree that it is a common mistranslation. I do believe that it is "murder" to tear a living baby from its mother's womb (sometimes a piece at a time). Not only is it murder, it is pre-meditated.
On the other hand it is entirely permissible to kill another in a war or self defense scenario.
Exactly. IBD hasn’t of late.
