WASHINGTONA week from today, Americans will pick a new president, but a surprising beneficiary may be off the ballot: Mitt Romney.
With polls in key states forecasting a comfortable victory by Sen. Barack Obama and fellow Democrats, Republicans may find themselves booted out of the White House, shoved further into the minority in Congress and marginalized in the powerhouse of Washington.
If Sen. John McCain loses next Tuesday, Romney could be well positioned to rise as a leader of the Republican Party to guide conservatives through a few years in the political wilderness and a favorite for the GOP presidential nomination come 2012.

Mitt the twit, Mr. Executive hairdo is and always has been in it for himself. He, just like the huckster and the MSM anointed “Americas Mayor” are done. It would be a disaster to recycle them back into a repeat of the huge pissing contest we had this time that led us to the choice of McCain or BO. I want McCain to win over that nazi-socialist POS but I know we aren’t getting much other than he’s not that nazi-socialist POS.
Romney is McCain but with worse Christian right numbers. It is Palin drawing crowds not the liberal end of the ticket and only those with the idiot blinders on can’t see it. Romney has no chance at a win, huge portions of Christians can’t vote for him no matter who you put on his ticket with him.
Agreed. I was never a Mitt hater- but I don’t trust him either.
Besides, Mitt’s a Republican at heart, not a conservative. We need fresh blood, new and younger ones who understand conservative principles and are willing to speak up and fight for them, articulate them and persuade voters why they are healthy for our country.
We need to hear words like LIBERTY and FREEDOM from our side more often- no more politspeak and cozy DC chatter.
We can start with the ones in the House who voted AGAINST the insane bailout.
Unless Romney moves FAR left to meet them, he would have NO chance.

Romney would be just the boy to do that, too...
And he doesnt have that much further to go...
He can do that.
Oh I agree with you. I think Romney is a fine man and a great executive, but your original post seemed to make the Romney story into the Ross Perot story while making John McCain sound like John Kerry.
How’s that for a lot of references :-)
Give him a hip, new look. Dracula with dreadlocks, that should do it. Yeah.
Crap is still crap!!!
He flipped too many flops, notably on abortion.
Mitt is a hasbeen. He doesn't seem to be a team player.

If the political right is again split among religious conservatives, social conservatives, and small-government conservatives, they'll select another RINO like McCain, and we'll be in decay for a decade.
The most direct and clearest way to find a small-government conservative who can heal our problems is to look for the pol who actually looks to repair the root cause of our current economic instability, rather than simply shoring up the balance sheets of select large firms. We're in this mess because the Left wanted to play Robin Hood yet again, and force banks to issue loans to unqualified debtors, and that has gone on long enough, with enough trillions of dollars in loans, to create a weak credit situation for everyone. It has impacted the global economy. All the trillion-dollar bailouts in the world won't change that underlying weakness.
The first pol to dare to say that unqualified poor and minorities ought not be granted loans that they aren't qualified for under the "old" (read: reliable) rules (based on acturial tables, and not "social justice") will be the person who can create real Hope and Change, and should be our candidate.
So, in your world, every person who has ever been soft on the pro-life issue should never change their mind and become pro-life. No one should listen to anything the conservatives and groups like Right To Life say about the abortion issue because, even if they come over fully to the pro-life side, you're still going to condemn them. Why should anyone listen to conservatives and change their minds if they're not going to be recognized for learning the truth and making the right decisions. The attitude you display, and those like you, actually serves to discourage anyone from changing their opinion. It is self-defeating and damages the pro-life cause.
We will be building our bunker down here. Buying a four year supply of beans, wheat and rice.
Repackaged? What the guy isn’t who he seems now? Mitt changes his positions and packaging more than some people change their underwear.
Well not as we know it anyway.
I thought it is a forgone conclusion that he's already won (according to the media)
