GOP defections buffet McCain as end draws near
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/25/8 | Carolyn Lochhead

Republican nominee John McCain heads into the final week of a historic presidential election beset by a wave of high-profile GOP defections and the second-guessing and recriminations from ostensibly friendly quarters that losing campaigns attract like flies.

McCain still could pull out an upset on a last-minute wave of voter hesitation about Obama, much like Hillary Rodham Clinton came back in New Hampshire after the polls counted her out, but political professionals are putting their bets on McCain going back to Phoenix, not rising like one.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell's broadside on Sunday was only the first of the recent GOP defections. The latest arrived Friday from former Republican Gov. William Weld of Massachusetts, who had endorsed former Gov. Mitt Romney over McCain in the GOP primary. Now Weld endorses Obama, calling the Democrat "a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America's standing in the world."

On Thursday, former Republican Gov. Arne Carlson of Minnesota endorsed Obama and ripped McCain in an essay for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Carlson said he saw in the Democrat "a remarkably disciplined and focused leader who has the potential to become a truly great president."

Just as striking as the tone of the GOP endorsements for Obama was the noticeable chill coming from the state parties in such McCain must-win states as Virginia and Florida.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, whom McCain considered and rejected as his running mate, said he had not appeared in any McCain ads because he wasn't asked. Reports aired that the state GOP is saving some of its war chest for the next election cycle. Similar tensions between the McCain campaign and the state party have surfaced in Virginia.

I absolutely agree....I think all this hatred towards Republicans is going to backfire big time....and I loved Bill O’Reilly on the view the other day - and I hate the view and not a big fan of BOR - but when he did his sour face of Joy and then asked Babawawa why she just stared at the floor when interviewing the McCains I loved it and you could tell it pissed off those old hags....and I’ve read (and have to agree) that the biggest silent majority are women who are livid with the treatment of Hillary and Palin....go girls - kick some ass!

Exactly the point I have tried to make for the last 4 elections, the Republican party needs the base for money and votes but they are not interested in what we think or want.

They have continually told the base “shut up and vote” and of course “keep sending that money”.

I’ve also read PUMA bloggers saying they are all falsely saying they’ll vote for Obama when asked in polls, to make his polls look so solid the libs won’t feel the need to vote.

Powell...Weld...Carlson. True Conservativism cannot advance with such impurity. Since Reagan, we have seen the Republican Party’s slow demise due to a diluting process that has accomodated the likes of the “unsound.”

The fire is necessary to refine. The dross must be separated out from that which is pure and then skimmed off. That which remains will be pure, sound, true. A sword made in such a way will make for a fine weapon, and, in the hands of a skilled swordsman will win many battles.

defection from being a RINO left wing snob to being a RINO left wing snob?

DINO trumps RINO

Conservative wins elections.

just compare Biden’s crows to Sarah’s crowds.

same for Sarah’s vs Obama’s crowds.
(that is when he is not trying to Goebles the propaganda images as the “heavy crown of leadership” photo ops)

No Republican now or in the future must ever consider Mr. weld and others who have endorsed Mr. Obama for any position. I am completely at a loss why they would endorse the candidate of the other party even if the other candidate has some strengths. If they cannot bring themselves to support their fellow Republican, they must just keep quite until the election is over. Country first and then family whether one's blood family or party. Simple common sense.

Sooooooo, how’s the “big tent” going? ...great without moral conservatives like myself, whose votes aren’t needed?

With all the mainstream media fawning over Obama you would think he would be 20 points ahead by now. Someone must be voting against him!

And with 60% NO RESPONSE in polling according to Michael Barone on Fox News I don't know how anyone THINKS they know what is going to happen in this election UNTIL IT'S OVER!

Don't listen to the MEDIA, GO VOTE!

O’Reilly showed that on his show the other night. I was actually outraged when, showing his appearance on The View, he had a side-by-side of McCain’s appearance running at the same time, and the looks on the face of Behar and Walters not even looking at McCain made my stomach turn. There is no civility on the Left. None. Their behavior is detestable. This is a person picked by perhaps half the country to vie for the highest office in the land. They weren’t just doing that to McCain, they were doing that to me, to you, to everyone on this site...

Just how do we go about getting these public air waves back from these folks?

The plethora od "its all over MSM propaganda is interesting. Its the sam as the whole idea of Islam.

ISLAM MEANS literally ....SUBMIT.

Everyone of these articles has the same message to America:

SUMIT TO OBAMA.

I will never submit to Obama or to the laws he would pass if elected. I WILL NEVER SUBMIT TO HIM OR THOSE WHO SUPPORT HIM.

And neither will America.

I am just an observer of the scene up here in Canada. I have to say that in over fifty years of watching and listening to elections in England, Canada and America, I have seen nothing like this one.

Much of the news coverage resembles a huge juggernaut. At least talk radio declares it's self. What I have seen on television is an absolute masquerade. The dignified "newsie" voices, the authoritative intonations.

My Liberal spouse is engrossed in an old movie. I went and switched on CNN. I just caught an individual talking about the McCain-Palin internal infighting. True the man did not say he knew of John and Sarah infighting. He went on and on about the split and the angst amongst the campaign organizers.

I got the name- a Mark Preston, CNN political correspondent. Then over to Barack and giving friendly coverage to Barack's address. Like it was a paid commercial almost. I turned it off. Went back to "Oliver Twist" an old film. I am genuinely feeling a little sad, about such unfair coverage and now absolutely unabashed. They are throwing every thing but the kitchen sink against the one candidate and his running mate.

The only consolation appears to be the old adage. Be careful what you wish for- you may get it. This as far as the MSM is concerned. George Orwell was right.

Near as I can tell from info sources which are in any way believable, the two candidates are dead even around 44% with 10% of the people still trying to make up their minds. These polls are BS, pure and simple.

My family have all voted and
I have been talking to democrat girlfriends, no pressure, just did you know type conversations. I’m seeing little support for obama, most are voting McCain although in most cases he’s not the draw, they LOVE Sarah.
