Democrat Congressman Jeff Bingaman created some controversy on with host Jim Villanucci KKOB in New Mexico yesterday when he hinted what the Democrats are going to do in the next Congress. They intend to stop conservative talk on the radio by reinstituting the "fairness doctrine." The fairness doctrine, of course, is only to affect radio.
I took the opportunity to call a supporter of the fairness doctrine, who has been very public in support of such assault on free speech. That person would be California Senator Diane Feinstein.
FEINSTEIN WEBSITE AND CONTACT INFORMATION.
A staffer named Joe, after a brief discussion about the fairness doctrine, cited HR 3302 that was introduced by NY Democrat Maurice Henchey but died in committee. The fairness doctrine would only apply to radio. Those are the public airwaves. There is no current bill that would reinstitute the fairness doctrine. But we all know it is coming.
When I asked the staffer if Sen. Feinstein would vote in favor of the fairness doctrine for colleges and universities in departments such as political science, history, and economics. After all, they get public funding. Such fairness doctrine might require that half of the tenured professors are on the political left and half on the political right.
"Um, er, um, well, I don't know if Senator Feinstein would support that. You will have to talk to her office in Washington" he mumbled. "You don't know?" I pressed. "No, I'm not sure on that," he lied.
We all know what is going to happen if Barack Obama is elected. One of the first things he will do is stifle free speech. As you recall, two prosecutors in St. Louis, who were part of Obama's Missouri "truth squad," threatened to prosecute anyone saying things about Obama that they determined were untrue.
While on vacation a few weeks ago, I called both prosecutors and created a scenario, claiming that I saw someone with a bumper sticker that said BARACK OBAMA IS A MUSLIM. I suggested that I may know the printer who was printing those bumper stickers. Both offices wanted the information about the printer if I could verify it.
We are in for very frightening times if Obama is elected. Very frightening.
Can you pick and choose with the Fairness Doctrine?
It only has to do with the public airwaves.
If they attempt to apply the Fairness doctrine to radio, then we will DEMAND the same be applied to universities and all schools that receive public moneys. Fairness is fair for all, don’tcha know?
Let’s see what happens with this election first... ;-)
I hate to admit it, but I agree with you.
Hey lets not stop with schools. ABC, NBC, CBS and all channels better have 2 sides to every story.
ABC, NBC, CBS and other television stations use the public airwaves as well. Perhaps a Republican can introduse a version of the Fairness Dictrine that would apply to all television channels for the first 5 years, then, with approval of the 2013 congress, it can be expanded to radio and learning institutions.
Force them to oppose it openly.
Oops!
dictrine = doctrine.
Yes, of all places, we certainly don’t want both sides of the story on a college campus. Heaven forbid the kids might hear from those conservatives!
I think they do NOT like things such as this:

Yes, I have suggested that. 15 minutes for Katie; 15 minutes for DFU. That’s fair.
Don’t forget the newspapers. I my city (Houston) the local paper has street vendors running out into traffic to sell papers. They also have newspaper vending machines on public sidewalks. Sounds like we should include newspapers.
Unions, too
Especially teacher’s Unions
We expect to see tax deductible contributions made in a bipartisan fairness doctrine way
What’s the difference between radio & TV rules, are TV waves private or public? [Just askin’].
Well I don’t know about a military coup but I will predict that us great unwashed out here in lala land are as difficult to coalesce that it’s like herding cats.
BUT...to try and stomp out talk radio....THIS is something that will have all of us joining together. We’re not the sort to go out and march but I predict that this is dangerous territory for the libs.
Everyone has a point and THAT would be the point that would have us revolting.
Rush should simply announce that he is a Democrat. Let them prove he isn’t. In fact, he should register as a Democrat. They’d have to balance his views by putting a Repub on the air.
Demand WHAT and from WHO? You're kidding of course..........
It's possible the Dems may have a super majority in both the house and the Senate and that will enable them to actually ammend the Constitution if they wish.....public opinion be damned.
COngress will pick and choose with the fairness doctrine.
First it will be applied to radio. TV will be exempt: It will be claimed that TV networks already regulate their coverage quite effectively (not), thusly their broadcasts will be exempted from the fairness doctrine.
“I just never expected it to come in my lifetime.”
Nor I. Suspect you will agree it’s better us than our children and grandchildren.
Another poster opined the veterans at Arlington and other military cemeterys were turning in their graves. I offered that, in my mind at least, they would rise and stand with us.
Semper Fi!
will the internet be next?
