Windfall Tax on Media and Entertainment Companies. Our fightback against the Media (Vanity)

Posted on 10/21/2008 6:59:21 PM PDT by watsonfellow

It seems to me that we've witnessed perhaps the worst media bias in any modern presidential (or indeed any) American election.

Clearly if the "one" wins it will be in large part because of the media's failure to actually examine/investigate him, their constant bias against McCain/Palin, along with their allies in the entertainment industry.

What to do?

Well conservatives always complain about media bias but then do nothing serious about it after elections (hint: if it's such a problem, only complaining about it during the heat of an election isn't going to do anything).

Indeed we conservatives need to formulate a public policy approach in the cool light of day to deal with this problem.

My suggestion:

1) After this election, no matter what the outcome, the head of the RNC, minority leaders in the House and Senate, every GOP governor, and leaders of every major conservative Think Tank form a task force- this task force will be charged with conducting an indepth study of media bias. Not just specific examples of media bias, but also the roots of it (ie, almost every MSM journalist comes from a Democrat background or a left magazine/etc (Slate, Mother Jones, New Republic etc)...

2) This task force publishes this study and submits it to every Journalism department and media organization in America- as well as to the Board of Directors of every Media and Media Holding Company (Disney, GE, Viacom etc).

3) We wait.

4) When no concrete action is taken, the GOP Congressional leaders and every GOP candidate for President in 2012 pledges to implement a massive Windfall Tax on these media holding companies (including Fox- believe me, they ain't no conservative)- the proceeds of which will be used to expand America's wi fi infrastructure. And when I mean MASSIVE, I mean so massive that shareholders of companies like GE won't know what hurt them.

Let's fight back.

Democrats do this all the time- they threaten certain industries (oil, defense) etc with windfall taxes and wouldn't you know it, not only do contributions from these industries to them go up- but they change the behavior of these companies (ie oil and gas becoming more "green" etc).

Media and Entertainment companies in a way bank on GOP stupidity in this regard.

Whereas they know that when the GOP takes over they don't have to worry about us raising taxes on them, so why even bother being fair, when their natural instinct is to support the Democrats quite openly (and with nothing to fear from the GOP, why not?).

Yeah, why can’t there be a windfall tax on a studio that puts out one of those box office hits? Have you seen the price of movie tickets these days? Should it be fair that a movie that costs $10 mil to make grosses $100 mil (#s completely out of thin air)? I mean, it’s not like studios don’t spend $10 mil or so on other movies that are box office disasters and have to cover those losses with the one smash hit they produce.

Anyways, good idea. We know the flaw in logic, but it’s an excellent way to call out the left and their tools in Hollywood on it.

Yes I agree.

Of course taxes are counter productive in the sense that they tend to hurt industries a great deal- but given that the Entertainment and Media industries are committed to the destruction of conservatism, it's time that conservatives think about destroying these industries in America.

Plus if played right, this could be ext. popular. The vast majority of the American people hate the media and entertainment industries.

So not only a windfall tax on media companies, but also a huge tax on legal music and video downloads as well as movie tickets and advertising rates on televisions and dvd sales.

This will also serve conservative social ends and hurt the leftists where it hurts.

I think there has to be a profit before you can exercise a windfall profits tax.

Well we can call it something else then, a windfall revenue tax...really the name doesn’t matter.

Or a National Digital Communication Infrastructure Upgrade Tax on Media and Entertainment companies.

You want to fight back? Then turn off the TV, cancel the subscriptions, boycott advertisers.

But understand that a free press is one of our greatest treasures. You’ll recognize that if Obama gets in office and the worm turns.

Literally.

We’re in a time of transition, old media to new media. Ain’t nothing much freer right now than Free Republic. You’re upset about old media, but you’re using new media, whose influence continues to grow.

Relax about it.

I think you are on to something here. I f the democrats win, our taxes are going up, that’s a given. What we need to do is to insist that democrat favored entities face higher taxation as well. Any democrat leaning economic segment should be taxed to compensate for their deleterious effects on society.
Such as, the entertainment industries for the social rot they cause. They produce nothing that society can’t do without, and they take money mostly from those who can least afford it. Next would be the legal profession. The legal beagles should be taxed to compensate for all the problems they cause the medical industry.

Other industries to follow!

To me, the MSM fall under the same catergory as the WWE, info-mercials, and daytime drama. All flash and sound bites, no substance. A bunch of drama queens that are trying to convince you idiot masses that you just don’t get it, and eventually you will come around to see things their way. They’re line of thinking is “ we know what’s best for you, because we have a degree in journalism, so just shut up serfs and take what we say at face value”. This mentality as I see it pi$$es me off to no end.
