Joe the Plumber target of Arizona (his Drivers License is suspended)

Joe the Plumber's' AZ driver license suspended Comments 6 | Recommend 4 Daniel Newhauser, For the Tribune

A plumbing license is not the only license "Joe the Plumber" is having troubles with.

The former Mesa resident has a suspended driver's license and outstanding court fines in Arizona, according to Mesa Municipal Court records.

"Joe," whose real name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, was referred to more than 20 times by Republican Sen. John McCain in Wednesday night's presidential debate for questioning Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's tax policy.

The man portrayed by McCain to be the typical, hardworking American revealed this week that he actually does not have a plumbing license, and now court records show he should not have a driver's license either, making it potentially even harder for him to get to work.

Wurzelbacher, who lived in Mesa in 2000 and had an Arizona driver's license, had his driver's license suspended by the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division on May 4, 2000, following a nonpayment of a court-imposed fine for civil traffic violations, according to court records.

America's new political icon, who owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes, according to public records, still owes more than $700 to the Mesa court system.

Records show he was cited for failure to stop at a red light and for failure to provide proof of insurance on Feb. 9, 2000, in a black Dodge truck at the intersection of Dobson and Baseline roads in Mesa.

After failing to pay his original fine of $627.50 issued in March 2000, his license was suspended and the fine was handed over to a collection agency along with a 16 percent surcharge. The now-resident of Holland, Ohio, still owes $727.90 to the Mesa Municipal Court, according to court records.

Nevertheless, Wurzelbacher's driver's license is still valid in Ohio, according to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and was renewed as recently as May 2005. Ohio law requires a license to be renewed every four years, meaning Wurzelbacher likely obtained an Ohio license in 2001, one year after having his Arizona license suspended.

With a suspended license in one state, it should not be possible to get a new license in another, said Cydney DeModica, spokeswoman for the Arizona MVD.

The only way "Joe the Plumber" could have slipped through the cracks is a clerical error in which his driving records were not entered into the Problem Driver Pointer System, the national database of information about people with a checkered driving past, said Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Lindsay Komlanc.

Komlanc added if the Ohio BMV were to receive the information, appropriate action could be taken, including suspension of his Ohio license.

With a little determination I can find out almost anything about anyone via the internet—all public record.

Take Ed Scultz...the mentioned construction company is a matter of public record as are divorces and various court cases (collections among them), addresses, associated names, phone numbers for the last 10 years, blah, blah.

That was only in five minutes. If I really wanted to, I could trace his life from birth to now. He is not worth the time. I would never post the personal here because I like to think I have more class than those attacking Joe. (I have slipped at times, but not out of spite. )

I would like Schultz and the other slime merchants to realize not everyone is as gracious as I or other freepers. Payback’s a bitch and one day someone will do to the slime merchants as they did to Joe.

That is good.
Several weeks ago a freeper on a mccain thread said that the campaign lurks here and even john takes a peek.

Let’s hope so.

Nope Gates is a democrat, and has meetings in Brussels with the big computer bigwigs over there, so is Warren Buffet a dem, and gave all that money to Gates foundation...so I don’t look for any favors there...in fact it is ominous where Bible prophecy is concerned.

Probably was. We’ve also had several instances of DMV employees (driver’s licenses) running scams with fake licenses and pocketing dough.

The Clinton White House went after Microsoft.

Did they break Bill Gates? Judging by his massive amounts of money to charity, I still think he is an advocate of the free market and the ability of private charitable work to help out the less fortunate (without first paying the salaries of government employees).

I would do my part to send some money to Joe for his defense fund AND to help pay his tax lien on his house as well as his other fine. These people are ruthless and will stop at nothing to destroy ANYONE who crosses them, even going so far as lying like dogs.

Why is it that they are insisting that he be called by his first name? To remind us that barry said we can’t use his middle name?

It is Chicago gutter politics. Anyone who poses a threat needs knocked off the playing field and destroyed. That is how Obama won most of his elections so far.

The Politics of Personal Destruction. That's the same way that Clinton, et al, got in office in '92. Come to think of it, Hillary is from Chicago.

Or better yet, you haven’t see what happens to fines when you don’t pay them... that’s a double-LOL... :-)

Not according to the article -- believe it or not, that $627.50 was the ORIGINAL fine, due in March 2000 for a citation that occurred in February 2000.

If the article is correct, that amount of fine for that violation is simply highway robbery by the state of Arizona.

A 16% surcharge was later tacked on for nonpayment.

I could care less whether he calls himself Joe or Sam or whether he’s licensed or unlicensed, but when you pose a question like you are trying to buy a plumbing business and you have a suspended drivers license in AZ with pending fines and you have a tax lien in the same state, the bottom line is that John’s staff did not vet this guy enough before using him as the prize. I’m starting to get embarrassed for not doing our research on this guy. C’mon John do some homework - and we wonder why we’re running behind in a lot of areas

Don't be an a**. The point isn't Joe the Plumber and his question, the point is Bozo's answer to the question. Besides that how do we know even half of what these a**hats are saying is true, and even if it were true the answer to his question stands and paints Bozo as a Marxist. Joe doesn't need a license to plumb, he may not have even lived in AZ, how do we know it is the same guy? Bozo's campaign staff have tax liens, not to mention some Democrat Senators. You sound like a whiny a**ed liberal, the answer is what is hurting Bozo not the questioner.

LOL..GREAT FIND!!

Anyone want to help me with a ‘project’? I would like to gather all of these ridiculous articles and start... INVESTIGATING THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WRITING THIS STUFF ABOUT JOE THE PLUMMER AND SARAH PALIN. Let’s put all of their divorce records, arrest records, home addreses, phone numbers, even traffic tickets, education records...every bit of it online!

Is anyone else already doing this? If so, please point me in the right direction so I can help.

This is the last straw and it’s time to fight fire with fire. I am sick to death of watching these Obama brownshirts in the media destroy freedom in this country. They are trying to intimidate people that are conservative/republicans and ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

I decided that after 8 years, it was time to have a tagline and I can’t watch Hannity and Colmes anymore.

I read somewhere that Colmes is a doctor? of what?
Proctology?

“I wish the media would do this kind of investigation of Obamanation and Biden.”

Hell, with this kind of investigation they could find the Zodiac killer and Amy Winehouse’s inner Nun.

“Wikipedia mentions Obama’s mother worked as “as a consultant in Pakistan”.

Consultant to who? Al Quaida? Does Obama have terrorist connections (other than his pals)? Ben Ladin is holed up in Pahkeestahn. If we still have a functional CIA, are they checking on this connection for national security purposes?

Correction- the media is destroying a man.

Talk about kill the messenger- he is not the point of all this, he is not running for any office- his character should not in any way be an issue.

He asked a candidate for President a question, and the issue should be the answer he was given by a man that should have his character questioned.

Amazing! I have a feeling this is just a tiny bit of insight to what it will be like living under an Obama Presidency.
