Pollsters say odds of McCain winning election are 'incredibly remote'
The Guardian ^ | October 15, 2008 | Ewen MacAskill

US pollsters today put John McCain's chances of overtaking Barack Obama in the final weeks to win the White House as extremely remote given the leads he has built up, the most recent putting him a staggering 14% ahead.

Polling experts expect the gap between the two to narrow as election day, November 4, draws closer, and some caution against a landslide win for Obama. But they regard the contest as effectively over barring some dramatic national security crisis.

"You are more likely to be killed by a meteor dropping on your head than McCain becoming president," said Professor Michael McDonald, who specialises in polls and election number-crunching at Virginia's George Mason University.

Pollsters said no US candidate has ever been as far behind as McCain at this stage in an election in recent political history and won. Once the electorate shifts in favour of a candidate, as it seems to have done over the last few weeks, it seldom moves again, they said.

Doug Usher, who was a pollster for John Kerry in his failed bid against President George Bush in 2004, is more cautious than many of his colleagues. He predicted a tightening of the race - especially since the instinct of the average US voter tends to be conservative - and that the US media would inevitably at some point write about an incredible McCain comeback.

Even so, Usher, who works for Washington, DC-based Widmeyer Communications, described McCain's chances of winning as possible but "incredibly remote". "There is only a one in 10 chance that McCain could overtake Obama. I think Obama is going to win but not by a landslide." Like other pollsters, he warned that some unexpected event could change the race: "What is endlessly fascinating about US politics, you...

When you consider most polls now show Obama ahead within the margin of error, its astonishing for pollsters to smugly declare the election is over.

More delusion from hardcore leftists. I really hope you Freepers aren’t buying this crap. The left is putting on a brave face, but realize Obama can’t seal the deal. Only a moron believes this rot.

Get real, sans fraud, bambi’s chance of winning is incredibly remote. The internals necessary to support a 14 point lead just simply are NOT there. The poll is a blatant lie.

How did he get to be 14% ahead? Like in one day? We’re supposed to buy that?

Yea, anyone citing a 14 point poll differential and taking it seriously who claims to be an expert is either dillusional or just flat out insane.

This election comes down to simply GOTV for Republicans.. if they show up in good numbers Fauxbama loses.. if they buy crapola like this and stay home Fauxbama can win.

That’s it folks, stop getting dejected, the polls are wrong, rediculously wrong. GOTV get your friends neighbors anyone else out to vote.. That’s what its about.

No, they’ll never “eat crow”.

Haven’t you seen the pattern?

Leftists NEVER “lose” elections - they’re always stolen from them, or at best, the voters were just too dumb to vote right.

Trying to dampen Republican turnout. The deep dirty secret is that this is the only way Obama wins is if Republicans don’t turn out.

Obama has a lot of things against him from a voting bloc perspective that a lot of candidates don’t have to face.

Americans eyes will be opened in the next three weeks. People have been praying for that. McCain in a landslide.

I will never kneel before the polling gods and whimper.

Anyone who does should be swiftly reminded that is exactly the path they want you on and it leads to only one place.

I am disgusted with any freeper who does not know history and how wrong polls can be, especially WEEKS away from an election!

I will NOT kneel.

I WILL FIGHT!

What a fraudulent report ... they take the most unfavorable poll for McCain and say no one has come from that far behind, without looking at the more reliable polls that show a 4 point deficit, which is less than Bush/Gore, Bush/Kerry and certainly Reagan/Carter.

The ‘big lie’ is in effect ... McCain is behind, he can’t catch up; McCain is behind, he can’t catch up; McCain is behind, he cant’ catch up ...

keep saying it often enough and loud enough.

Normally I might agree that polls indicate landslide for opposition.

Not this time — there is nothing remotely accurate about any of these polls; they are crazy and getting worse every hour.

If this is ultimately “won” by the MARXIST, it will be thanks to fraud, lies and just the plain old stupidity of his “voters.”

The incredible event that will defeat Obama is not that incredible because the event is Obama himself. Jeremiah Wright apprentice is not going to be trusted by a majority of Americans and thus he is going to be defeated.

I also believe McPalin will win handily. Here are my reasons:

1) “Polls” that show Obama ahead tell a different story when internals are studied. Please see http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2008/10/14/an-eeyore-free-zone

2) Hillary and Bill are not acting like they want Obama to win, since she wants to run again in 2012, despite what she alludes to.

3) “Hussein” being Obama’s middle name is still news to most people.

4) A picture of Obama dressed as a Muslim (there are at least three) is still worth 1000 words (3000 in this case). Man your email station! Post bills!

5) The PUMAs who know the hows and whys of Hillary getting cheated, will vote Palin, and will pull others. Check out http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.php?t=33711&page=3 and http://democrats-against-obama.org

6) “Bitter ... [Gun Clingers]”, will vote McCain

7) The Palins ARE America and the conservative base. America and the conservative base will vote accordingly.

8) The NRA has “8 figures” of ads to unload in “swing” states

9) At one point, Obama was only 5 points up in New York! New York!

10) The Democrats were talking about Democratic consultants freaking out over Obama mis-managing his campaign before they settled into poll alteration.

11) The Enemedia is already spreading the meme that if Obama loses, it “is racism”. They see the tea leaves ...

12) The Media was calling the election for Kerry ELECTION MORNING in 2004, and Carter and Reagan polled evenly on election day! SOMEONE is trying to buffalo us with these polls! Here’s a history lesson of ACTUAL RESULTS:

1980: Reagan 50.75%, Carter 41%, (+9.75 Reagan) Reagan won 45 states.
1984: Regan 58.77%, Mondale 40.56% (+18.21 Regan) Reagan won 49 states.
1988: Bush 53.37%, Dukakis 45.65% (+7.72 Bush) Bush won 42 states.
1992: Clinton 43.01%, Bush 37.45%, Perot 18.91% (+5.66% Clinton) Clinton won 30 states.
1996: Clinton 49.23%, Dole 40.72%, Perot 8.40% (+8.49% Clinton) Clinton won 31 states.
2000: Bush 47.87%, Gore 48.38% (Gore +0.49%) Bush won 30 states.
2004: Bush 50.73%, Kerry 48.27% (Bush +2.46%) Bush won 31 states.

NO WAY is Obama up 14 points!

13) McCain has only started to play the Ayers and ACORN cards. McCain has not yet played the Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, Odinga, ... more at http://www.barackbook.com

14) Plenty of white Democratic voters are unimpressed with Obama, and will not vote for him. Democrats can’t energize their base!

15) Obama has only 60% of the Jewish vote last I checked, compared to the 75% Kerry got.

16) The Christian base that re-elected Bush in 2004, knows Sarah is more than a Sunday Christian, and is praying for her.

17) McCain opened 50 offices in California. It’s in play! It should be the bluest of the blue, and it is not.

18) Google “Bradley Effect”. Obama is getting poll votes he’ll never get on election day. PUMAs have also agreed to lie to pollsters about supporting Obama, and are encouraging others to do so.

19) Operation Chaos resulted in an overlarge quantity of Democrat registrations that will never ever vote Democratic.

20) Polls are meant by the liberal media, to SHAPE public opinion, not report it.
