John McCain rally in Iowa marked by partisan prayer
Los Angeles Times ^

Posted on 10/11/2008 4:37:20 PM PDT by WilliamReading

Rev. Arnold Conrad, in delivering an invocation at a rally today for John McCain in Davenport, Iowa, apparently didn't get the word from the candidate about elevating the tone at such gatherings.

Conrad, who appeared before the crowd before McCain had arrived, offered a prayer that seemed to urge divine intervention to prevent Barack Obama from winning the presidential election -- and cast the outcome as a referendum on differing religions.

The Times' Maeve Reston was at the event, and she passed along the key passage from Conrad's words:

I would also pray Lord that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their God -- whether it's Hindu, Buddha, Allah -- that his [McCain’s] opponent wins for a variety of reasons.

And Lord I pray that you would guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you would step forward and honor your own name in all that happens between now and Election Day.

Oh Lord, we just commit this time to you, move among us, make your presence very well felt as we are gathered here today in Jesus's name I pray.

Some in the crowd greeted the prayer with applause.

Thoughts ?

What I pray privately is what I pray privately, but the triune God I believe in cannot override voters' free will. I suppose he could steer people to truth wherever it may be found if he so chooses.

Since there were different ethnic groups in attendance although what appeared a small minority, maybe it would be better not to have a prayer as such, but if they don't pick on us for that, it will be something else.

I've pondered a lot about why things go the way they do, just pray there is a plan and that it is God's plan :-)

While that is undoubtedly true, whose cause do you think he supports, the side who wanted slavery and now infanticide on demand, or the party that was formed to end slavery and now opposes infanticide?

Abortion is used as a political tool, not only by the Democrats, but also the Republicans. It's the carrot they dangle over us every election to make us vote for them. And yet here we are decades later, and they still haven't eliminated it. We've had quite a few justices appointed by Republicans, and some of them are liberal on abortion. My fear is that they won't end abortion because it's too potent a tool for gaining votes. If they really wanted to end abortion they would make a push for removing abortion from the purview of federal jurisdiction and give it back to the states where it belongs. Many states would outlaw it pretty quickly, and this alone would be an improvement over what we have now.

God can see through rhetoric and political ploys. He's for his people in all parties (indeed in all nations) rather than being a sold-out party man, so to speak.

I’ve forgotten, perhaps you can refresh my memory, who was it that signed the law banning late term abortions?

God listens to all our prayers. Do not underestimate his power or his rightousness.
But, at the same time do not under estimate mans depravity and mans need for discipline as in the whole world or as in a nation.
The prayer this fellow prayed was that God would uphold His reputation.(Gods)
Well, God does have a reputation for bringing into power those he needs for his purpose.
Both the good and the bad leaders.
If God allows Obama to win he does it for a reason.

My suggestion is to not judge God by the worlds standards.
History is full of dark times this may be one of those times.
This may be the last time.
We just don't know.
Get right with God and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today.
Realize that everyone needs the Savior.

From Romans 8

Future Glory 18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope thats[i] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?
25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.
27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

More Than Conquerors

28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,[j] who[k] have been called according to his purpose.
29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
31What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
36As it is written:
"For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."[l]
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[m] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Your point is well taken. It’s a good step. Nevertheless, such a law is entirely insufficient in stemming the tide of abortion as a whole. I still maintain that removing the issue to the states is the best way to combat abortion in all trimesters, as many states would simply outlaw the practice altogether and thereby create, for the first time in thirty-some-odd years, a sizable chunk of the country where babies cannot legally be murdered.

No doubt.

However, my point was that there is one party that clearly has taken positions that are consistant with Gods positions, as revealed in His Word.

Whether we should be public about that fact has long been the subject of discussions. I’m in favor of of being more open about it than we have been.

That prayer was just fine by me, and the fact that the DBM is upset is just icing on the cake.

Why is it so wrong to turn to The God that this country was founded on in a time of need?

There is a verse in the Bible about the effectiveness of the prayers of the faithful. If it comes from the heart and is Gods will, then yes it will work.

The media squeals and McCain gives in and chastises his supporters so they are just going to ramp up the squealing. I don’t remember this amount of indignation at Rev Wright.

There are some things that are Gods Will. He says no to some of our prayers for a reason. Its not always pretty and often makes no sense but He knows what He is doing.

One other point, the Republican Party is way ahead of any of the major churches on the issue of abortion.

Even the Catholic Church (I’m not Catholic) hasn’t taken a ‘legal’ stand on the issue of late term abortion with politicians, still granting Communion to those who support infanticide.

In time, I’m sure, they’ll catch up with their members belief, and with the Republicans Parties actions.

I reject the argument that the Republicans are keeping abortions around for political purposes. The facts say otherwise.
