I'll leave it all up until Monday FRiend and if things slow down around these parts today, I may add to what's already up.
I also highly recommend the Victor Borge stuff. He's drier than even Newhart, more hilarious than the Smothers Brothers with a touch of Don Rickles' insult humor and the ad lib genius of a Robin Williams; not to mention he's a fully vetted concert pianist, actually a prodogy from the age of three.
The man was a treasure, making his name (Børge Rosenbaum) doing anti-Nazi humor in Europe in the 30s. When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was away playing a concert in Sweden, and he managed to escape to Finland where he then imigrated to America on the USS American Legion, the last passenger ship that made it out of Europe prior to the war. He arrived in the United States in late August, 1940 with only 20 dollars, three of which went to the customs fee.
Disguised as a sailor, Borge returned to Denmark once during the Nazi occupation to visit his dying mother (to whom he dedicated his serious recording of Brahms Lullaby, posted earlier). Despite a death warrent from the Nazis he risked his life to see his mother again. Besides being Jewish, he was known throughout Europe for his over-the-top anti-Hitler comedy.
Borge couldn't speak a word of English when he arrived in The US, but he quickly adapted his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies. He took the name of Victor Borge, and, in 1941, he started on Rudy Vallee's radio show and was hired soon after by Bing Crosby for the Kraft Music Hall.
From then on, fame came quickly for Borge, who won "Best New Radio Performer of the Year" in 1942. By 1943, he co-starred in film roles with stars such as Frank Sinatra (in "Higher and Higher"). By 1946 he hosted "The Victor Borge Show" on NBC and appeared on "Toast of the Town" hosted by Ed Sullivan several times during 1948. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States the same year.
He started the 'Comedy in Music' show at John Golden Theatre in New York City on October 2, 1953 and it became the longest running one-man show in history with 849 performances when it closed on January 21, 1956, which placed it in the Guinness Book of World Records. His string of television and film appearances is impressive
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0096493/ and he continued touring until the night before his death. Borge received Kennedy Center Honors in 1999 and he passed away in 2000 at the age of 91, after 75 years of entertaining.
