McCain plans fiercer strategy against Obama
Article Launched: 10/03/2008 07:11:11 PM PDT
WASHINGTON Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said.
With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Republican's campaign also is eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.
"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of TV ads are coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

I’ll believe it, when I see it.
Here’s to hoping.
Well it’s about time. 30 days to go, tear him down and take no prisoners.
Ditto.
McCain is a socialist at this point in time, plus he allowed himself to be played by Nancy Pelosi, of all people. The man has lost his fastball, that is if he ever had one.
bingo! he needs to do something. quick!
Hopefully, this was the plan all along - let O think he’s pulling ahead, then UNLEASH THE FURY!
-bring back Jeremiah Wright
-bring back Ayers
-Link Obama to Fannie
What’s he gonna use? Spitballs?
He didn’t get played, he agreed with this bill. Period.
Very good!
Yea, right, and hell will freeze over on Sunday.
It’s about time!
Yes.... :)
Whatever......The guy running his campaign has some issues. It is about time that we start standing up for ourselves as Conservatives and Republicans, because for the last week, I have felt like John has been campaigning for the other side.
The trouble with waiting to attack until you are behind is the media will frame it as “desperation.”
McCain should be using Giuliani more - Rudy can attack with the best of them. McCain just doesn’t have his heart in it.
Why do they talk about their strategy? WTF come on...
I would say 30 days is about right. I was expecting it to stay right around tied with McCain up a point, then McCain’s team launches a massive last 2 week offensive on Rev Wright/Ayers/Rezko/Socialism etc etc to get the “last impression”.
That of course was before the financial debacle happened. Assuming that will be the “ October surprise” and nothing else happens, ramping up 2 weeks earlier might help.
The problem? I think that needed to be the last impression, to create doubt.
Now it might be a case of allowing Obama too much time to recover that last few days. But it is dicey to game it too closely.
They have to just launch it now and hope for the best.
McLame...
We knew this guy was bad news.
