The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family (By Gwen Ifill)
Essence ^ | Gwen Ifill

Posted on 10/02/2008 7:38:42 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Soon we will vote for our next president, and for the first time in history, one of the two candidates is a Black man. For a year, Essence pursued an interview with the entire Obama family‹to no avail. Finally, this summer ESSENCE became the only Black media outlet allowed a glimpse into the lives of Barack, Michelle and their two girls, Malia and Sasha, when we were invited to their South Side Chicago home. Weeks later, veteran political journalist Gwen Ifill was with the family as they campaigned in a small mostly White western town, and she flew with them to a Black church in the urban Midwest.

Barack Obama is sitting in the back of his rented luxury campaign bus with its granite counters and two flat-screen TVs. The Illinois senator's arms are wrapped around his wife, Michelle, whom he doesn't get to see much these days. At this very moment he is, of all things, singing.

I've just asked them how their lives have changed since he won the Democratic presidential nomination. There have definitely been changes, especially for Michelle Obama, who used to pride herself on campaigning by day and rushing home to her daughters each night. Now she is spending more of her days and nights on the road, but seldom in the same place as her husband. And when their daughters‹Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 get to see their dad, they likely have to share him with thousands of adoring strangers. "Daddy's gone a lot," Sasha notes. "We don't see him that much."

Hmmmmm - who is raising the children if both parents are on the road campaigning? The DEMS were so dang concerned over who was raising Sarah Palin's children when she became McCain's running mate yet their candidate is doing the very same thing!

What a bunch of hypocrites - yeah I know. . .what do we expect.

The second largest users of these bumper stickers is in the state of California, after Texas.

Lots of 'em have gone to VA, FL, MI, OH, WI, and NC too, with modest numbers to SC, OK, SD, PA, WA, ID, NM, and Others

As to CA, here's one that was sent in to me little while ago.

I'M VOTING FOR SARAH

She’s moderating the debates tonight...fair and balanced.

We can only hope that Biden asks her to stand up and be applauded for giving him the questions to research in advance!

I wonder where that person lives. I bet most of the bumper stickers are going to rural areas, where you don't have much contact with the urban jungle and the apes that live there!

I'd say for this election, you're asking for trouble if you put a Palin/McCain sticker on your car in the urban areas!

“been granted exclusive access by him.”

That’s why she’s swooning. Obama has allowed the press into his campaign and made them feel that they’re insiders.

The press are usually considered outsiders because their job is to work at getting inside and finding things out. Obama is making their job easier and even pleasant.

Gwenn Awful herself was questioning Sarah’s ability to govern and care for her five children.

I’d rather have Sarah as a member of my family than Michelle Omarosa any day at all.

Just the other day, Gwen Ifill, the rapidly rising star of TV news, was telling a reporter how the networks had pursued her because of her obvious gifts, her record and that “bonus of bonuses, I’m a black woman.”

I have noticed: when Obama disembarks from a limo all
the people around him are black. Are all the people in his
intimate circle black?

Tonights debate is really about Ifil vs Palin.

Ifil is Obama

Palin is conservatives.

it is that simple.

Palin has to beat Ifil

consider Ifil as that token woman in the board room who is threatened by another woman who has made it to the board room based on merit rather than on quota.

Ifil is the quota protecting her turf.

tonights debate is that simple.

Palin vs the left as represented by Ifil.

RE: “Are you sure you spotted a bumper sticker in CA? I haven’t seen ONE, not a ONE! I live in the Sacramento area and that’s not even mega-lefty country either, although it’s getting worse and worse.”

I live in a close-in suburb of Los Angeles — leftie voters, as long ago as the fifties. On my street we have one old guy with McCain stickers on his car, including the stickers from another past election! I KNOW several neighbors who are totally for Obama, and another retiree who, like me, is for McCain. The flag-flyers around here (few) tend to be Republicans.

As for me, I’m a chicken and won’t put a McCain sticker on my car, but I do have a McCain visor that sits in the back window whenever I am out and about. My car would get keyed, or worse, if I applied a sticker. But even here in Los Angeles, I have seen the occasional McCain sticker. Yes, really! Not many, but a few. Also a couple of Nobama stickers.

You can almost predict where the Obama stickers will be seen — lots in areas occupied by industry types, and Jews (I know, I know), and college kids.

But I agree, there are undoubtedly many more McCain supporters than you know, but the risks of advertising are too great to use the stickers or yard signs.
