The seeds of the House Republican revolt over the financial industry bailout were sown in an e-mail message circulated Monday night as internal animosity built quickly over the Bush administration’s request for $700 billion to prevent an economic collapse.
In a message to members of the conservative Republican Study Committee, leaders of the bloc of more than 100 lawmakers solicited ideas, calling for a “free-market alternative to the Treasury Department’s proposal so that, regardless of how individual R.S.C. members vote on final passage, House conservatives have something to be for.”
As the week progressed, it became abundantly clear that one thing conservative Republicans were most certainly not for was the Treasury plan, prompting them to begin searching for an alternative to avoid the perception of strictly being naysayers.
By the end of Friday, at least a portion of their alternative seemed likely to be included in the broader proposal as a sweetener for Republicans, although closed-door negotiations continued into the evening on Friday, and the contours of the final package remained in limbo.
After years of acceding to the White House on a variety of initiatives despite deep misgivings, House Republicans found the administration’s latest proposal to be too much to swallow.

Paulson Jr. has been too quick to bargain mainly with Democrats, led by the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California, and Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, not only on this plan but on the stimulus proposal earlier this year, a subsequent housing bill and other economic measures.

Last night McCain could have won the election, and possibly won the congress back for Republicans if he would have denounced the bailout, offered conservative solutions to the problem, and hung the 700 billion bailout around 0bama's, the democrat's, and Bush's neck. It would have been a stroke of brilliance, and would have been a rallying point for the voters and conservatives. It was a missed opportunity.
I can take criticism and this is just brainstorming. I am sure there are faults with this plan and I would be glad to hear them.

I'm not sure that the House Republicans can kill it. The blackmailers in the White House and the Treasury have everyone convinced there will be blood in the streets if this plan isn't accepted. The best the GOP can do is take most of the horrendous things ($$$ for Acorn and La Raza) out of the final bill. That would be a pyrhic victory though. The Socialist have taken control of America.
From where? This should get much more play while calling attention to Wall street contributions to Democrats - the party of the little guy.
Why are you blaming Republicans. They have no control of what is presented by the Democrats or have you forgot that the House and Senate is a RAT pack. The best the Republicans can do is attempt to get some sanity in the bill. If you want to vote out start with Frank and Dodd with jail time. Then go after the RATS. Not the Republicans.
The bailout is doomed to failure. It depends on housing prices coming back, which isn’t going to happen with the huge oversupply of homes on the market.
Lots of ways:
Go to your payroll department immediately and change your withholding deductions to 9—at 10 the emnployer is required by law to send a copy of your w-4 to the IRS-—and be very careful to take the additional money you get in your paycheck and set that money aside for when you actually file your taxes the next year. You might pay a small penalty for not paying enough withholding into the system, but you will make an immediate impact to the funds the Feds receive every week in withholding passed on from your employer to the IRS.
If every single worker shorted this money immediately, even at $20 or 30 or 50 dollars, this will hurt them and get someone’s attention.
The biggest problem you might have is to decide which bank it would be safe to put the money into, especially if you are a higher taxed person.
You make an excellent point!!! What happens if this package simply isn't enough to turn things around? Do they ask for more money? If so, where would that come from? You simply can't get blood out of a rock.
I am extremely proud that Paul Ryan is my Congressman. He is one of the brightest spots in the Republican Party and in times like this, would have been a BRILLIANT pick for McCain’s VP.””

I agree that no taxpayer funds should be used. The free market should be allowed to work. If the Government gets involved at all, it’s role should be as the auctioneer of these bamkrupt companies and all the paper.
