Are certain conservatives setting Sarah Palin up to fail?
With the recent news that conservative commentator Kathleen Parker has joined the ranks of anti-Palin conservatives George Will, Charles Krauthammer, David Frum and Ross Douthat (as well as moderate-conservative David Brooks), one has to wonder how these folks will respond if McCain and Palin lose to Barack Obama and Joseph Biden on November 4.
Its likely that Parker, Will, Krauthammer, Frum, Douthat and Brooks will attempt to blame Palin for a GOP loss, arguing that she was not ready for prime time and that her supposed lack of knowledge drove away independents. While these commentators all deserve respect for their accomplishments, a potential effort by these commentators to blame Palin for the loss will only cause more divisions on the right.
To various degrees, these commentators have issues with what they perceive to be the glorification of conservative populismand they all seem to view Palin as an embodiment of that populism. In their eyes, Palin seems to symbolize a guns-babies-Jesus vision of conservatism that alienates key voters, especially those influenced by Americas secular culture.
These commentators seemingly would have preferred a Republican like Mitt Romney or Bobby Jindal as the McCains second-in-command: both Romney and Jindal are conservatives whose public images lack culture-war overtones. No one really thinks of conservative populism when they look at Romney and Jindal: Palin, on the other hand, is now seen as the hero of what liberals derisively referred to four years ago as Jesusland.

McCain wouldn’t have a chance at winning without her. All of those numbskulls are East Coast, inside-the-beltway or inside the city types who are embarrassed by the thought of someone outside of an elite college or university anywhere near the Oval Office or Naval Observatory.
Im disappointed in Krauthammer. The rest of them are not real conservatives. Too snotty.
Exactly. I really like her and anyone who doesn’t think she is more qualified than Obama is not being intellectually honest. Obama is so far in over his head and Biden is a complete egotistical moron.
I do NOT care a whit about what these media elites think.........America fell for Sarah and her story....WE elect presidents and WE like her.......they can sit and opine all they want, I don’t care what they think.
palin totally changed the dynamic of this race. conservatives or not, i dont much care what these people think about sarah.
Let’s face it: Brooks, Will and Parker are far from conservative commentators, so I’m not surprised by their opinions. But Krauthammer is a disappointment, for sure. McCain would be 10-15 points behind without Palin there to energize the base at this point.
Yep.
Only insiders are welcome in their small world.
Although I like Krauthammer, he’s wrong on ALOT of chit.
He said last night the market would plummet today. And said it several times.
He was wrong on that and he’s wrong on Sarah. He’s also had very glorifying words for Obama during his trip to Iraq.
Ridiculous.
You said it. It would not even be a race without Gov. Palin. If Sen. McCain loses (and I predict a landslide for McCain) the reason he was ever close was Governor Sarah Palin.
“Sarah PalinThe Fall Girl?”
no. no. they got it wrong. they should lay off the crack pipe.
“Sarah Palin The Girl To Fall For”
there corrected. I fell for Palin at Barracuda.
The RNC would be broke right now without Palin. I am poor, but my friends who never gave a cent to anyone have all given money to the GOP and McCain because of Sarah.
They’ll change their tune after Sarah demolishes Plugs in their debate. But we won’t be accepting any apologies!
***Sarah is one of us...you dis her you dis US***
Repeat, as needed.
She is me.
Krauthammer is also not pro-life.
Anyone that vote's FOR McCane only BECAUSE of Palin is an idiot.
She's gonna have her chance to prove it when she debates Biden. One thing going against her will be the enormous pressure on her to stand up to Biden. It's one thing to be good, and competent, and quite another to convince all the naysayers to the contrary.
I think the Biden/Palin debate could be the "make or break" moment for her.
Of course the media spin will be somewhat predictable, but if she does well, she can really take her message to a higher level.
McCain would be down 15 without Palin.
They can all smoke a idling tailpipe.
Its amazing that Palin is still taking a beating when the VP on the other ticket thinks President Roosevelt went on TV during the stock market crash of 29, thinks that were negotiating with Iran, and who thinks the surge was a failure
Talk about not qualified—Biden’s just a downright nut.
George Will, Charles Krauthammer, David Frum and Ross Douthat
And when did these people become conservatives?
