McCain Supports House GOP, Blunt Says
CBS News ^ | 09.26.08 | By Glenn Thrush

Roy Blunt, negotiator for the House GOP, just told CNN that John McCain is "with" his caucus -- even though the Republican candidate hasn't publicly backed any plan yet.

Blunt, seen as a seasoned hand who will smooth differences between the camps, didn't say if the Arizona senator backed their market-based approach ["Certainly... he might be supportive"] -- but suggested McCain agreed the whole process needed to be slowed down.

"Everybody else seemed to be rushing for a deal and John McCain came back and said, 'Wait a minute, I think the House Republicans have the taxpayers in mind and I'm with them,'" Blunt, the minority whip said.

By siding with the House Republicans on drilling and now, this mess, McCain is strengthening his coattails.

McCain will just have to take charge and say this is too important not to discuss right now.
The important thing is he must come out against risking $700 billion in taxpayer dollars, come out against Bush’s plan, and put 0bama and the Democrats squarely on the side of Bush and Paulson.

He needs to turn the tables on 0bama, and turn 0bama into Bush.

Bush is not in on this and supports the Paulson bill 100%. Don’t know why some of you keep insisting this is part of his strategy. He wanted the Paulson bill to be approved and signed. He never worked with House Republicans — only Democrats.

Bottom Line: Bush is not who most of us thought he was when we elected him.

Republicans in the House are not in a very good bargaining position. Truth is, Democrats can pass the Paulson/Rat/Bush bailout bill anytime they want.

But they won't cuz they know the deal is bad for tax payers and they need cover of GOP votes backing the bill.

McCain opposes Bush bill yet McCain is Bush III ?
There goes Obama's main talking point!

You can already hear the ads if the House Republicans don't sign on to this:

"President Bush and the congressional Democrats spent $700 billion of your tax dollars to bail out Wall Street...."

McCain can go either way based on whatever he’s convinced himself is right, so as far as he’s concerned everyone needs to just calm down and watch his actions and cross their fingers he lands the right way. I don’t trust him an inch, but I’m holding my tongue to watch what he does first on this issue.

I will say my support is in limbo on the outcome.

I don’t expect the entire House plan to be adopted. I expect some of the Paulson plan adopted. The question is what is stripped from Paulson’s and what is added from the House.

Paulson was a starting point that the House Republicans rejected. ACORN was a Democrat add-on to the Paulson starting point.

I don't know if the President or Paulson support ACORN. I do know that the House Republicans don't support the original Paulson bail-out and they don't support the Democrat add-on, money for ACORN.

I think that was pretty obvious this morning when he put out a statement pointing out that the House GOP finally had representation, at least that he was sympathetic anyway.

If you actually think a completely conservative bill could pass with most not wanting that, you are fooling yourself.

Of course there will be some give and take here.

We will lose in some areas, but we may just be able to win in some as well.

In politics, you have to consider that a victory.

I don’t know who she is but the woman with Brit’s panel on Fox tonight said there has been a massive middle class revolt against the 700B bailout, phones ringing off the hook all day etc. If that is the case why is everyone so keen to blame McCain for gumming it up? Am I missing something?

The Democrats in the Senate and the House want to cover over their responsibilities creating this mess. Republicans need to call them out and tell the Truth on Them.
