O STUMPS AS JOHN TRUMPS
NY Post ^ | 9/25/2008 | Dick Morris, Eileen McGann

FACING a postconvention fall in the polls, John McCain once again reshaped the dimensions of the race by suspending his campaign and calling for postponement of tomorrow's debate.

This bold move could have an impact on the race akin to McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Defensively, McCain had to act to stop the fall in his poll numbers.

Offensively, he has placed himself at the epicenter of the only issue on the national agenda - proactive action to stop a total international financial collapse.

Obama's response to McCain's initiative is lame. As with his initial reaction to Sarah Palin, Obama has miscalculated. While he tries to spin McCain's move as a mere response to his initiative, it was the Republican who first issued the call for a suspension of the campaigns.

Both McCain and Obama will now go to Washington. McCain on his own initiative. Obama as a result of the president's call for an economic summit.

But it is McCain who will play the proactive role. Obama will come to Washington, but will keep one foot outside the Beltway.

Now we can be certain that McCain made a bad decision.

(Kidding, I actually agree with Morris here)

In Obama’s speech to the CGI, he said “We wiped out malaria in this country, we can do the same in Africa.” When did we ever have a malaria epidemic in this country?

In this case, I'm greatly amused at McCains affinity for knife twisting in the back, as habit of McCain's that always get my criticism.

Ya, know ... when I saw Morris on Ted Baxter’s last night and heard him say this was a + for McCain, my first thought, “We’re screwed”

Maybe he meant to say Yellow Fever! There used to be outbreaks of that

lol. Good point. Maybe it was when Franklin D. Roosevelt was on tv talking to the American people about the Depression as it started. Oh yeah he wasn’t president at that time and there were no tvs. Huh.

His slogan is “Country First,” and here he is, proving it.

Unfortunately, the bib dribblers in the media are working overtime to insist Mac is is panic mode, he’s desperate, everything about his campaign is faltering. You know: the standard script.

Too bad. Besides, since when did debates become some sacrosanct rule for Democrats?

"Half of life is just showing up." McCain is taking off the table the one issue the Democrats have going for them and that is the economy. He showed up to work in Washington and Obama is still acting like there is nothing amiss. Obama may or may not show up but he's a prisoner of events now.

Trying to postpone the debate looks like nothing more than pure politics. It won’t do anything to help the economic situation. And having the debate won’t hurt it any more than it’s already hurt.

Malaria used to be endemic to this country along with other diseases. In the 1840’s there were supposedly summer outbreaks as far north as Boston.

It was especially common in the South along with a whole laundry list of internal parasites. Clean water and modern mosquito-control measures is what dealt with it.

Brilliant move on McCain’s part.

Obama intended to hole up in a hotel until Friday and try to quickly learn some talking points on national security and foreign affairs before the debate. Now his cram session is interrupted.

McCain can talk national security and foreign affairs with no preparation. He knows the subject.

Obama’s squawk that a leader can do two things at once is ridiculous. He had no intention of doing anything but practicing for the camera.

McCain looks like a leader, and the debate probably still goes on with an unprepared Barry S.

It is so funny Obambi keeps saying (in his numerous tv appearances since McCain suspended his campaign less than 24 hours ago—lol!) McCain went back to DC for a photo op. Well I have not seen McCain since his press conference to suspend his campaign, but Obama has had what two press conferences? or his CGI talk. All in the span of less than 24 hours. Can you imagine this yahoo against all the world leaders that plan to pull his chain if he becomes president? LOL!!

When Teddy Roosevelt was President, DC was still considered a malaria hazard area by foreign diplomates.
DDT took care of that and a few other areas...

I agree. Can't Obama go back to DC and help with the economic crisis WHILE he's preparing for the debate? A leader should be where he's needed, after all, and Obama did NOT quit his day job before beginning to campaign. John McCain can debate foreign policy in his sleep. It looks like Obama is the one who can't walk and chew gum.

Everyone keeps talking about a big drop in the polls for McCain. Where do they see this "big" drop in the polls? I don't see where's dropping in the poll numbers so much that he has to panick, unless of course you listen to ABC/Washington times polls or the polls that Fox came out with a couple of days ago that showed him falling behind by 8-9 points.

If you ask me, all this talk about him dropping in the polls is a bunch of hooey.

Oh, baloney. Morris is more bipolar than most posters around here. A close race in the polls plummeted to a close race in the polls!!

Yep. Wishful thinking by libs, and handwringing by conservatives.

Obomber’s initial response does not surprise me. It’s so atypical of Dems. They wait to see how a Republican will position himself and then go the complete polar opposite, no matter what. Even when they agree, it’s different or for a different reason.
