Malaria used to be endemic to this country along with other diseases. In the 1840’s there were supposedly summer outbreaks as far north as Boston.
It was especially common in the South along with a whole laundry list of internal parasites. Clean water and modern mosquito-control measures is what dealt with it.
That’s what I thought - including significant impact on sickness in the Civil War.
